The Jing Project - It's Official
Posted on Tuesday July 22, 2008 by Tony Dunckel
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JING, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JING...
That's right, our little Jing Project is turning one. And we are pleased to announce that Jing is officially becoming a TechSmith product offering!
Now, don't worry, it's still free. Plus, as a token of our gratitude to all of you who have used Jing, provided feedback, and been all around good folks, we are upgrading your complimentary Screencast.com account. How does 2 GB of storage plus 2 GB of transfer sound? That's 10 times the space and double the bandwidth. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say...Happy Birthday to Jing Users!
Of course, in an effort to address your requests for additional features and alternative Jing models, we will likely have premium versions available soon. Stay tuned!

Hi;
I use SNAGIt 9 and Camtasia and I love TECHSMITH products. But I cannot figure out 'WHY" JING is better to use than SNAGIt. I can capture and send images even quicker in SNAGIT. Perhaps the video recording aspect should be integrated into Camtasia to avoid duplicity and kepp simplicity.

Congrads! Your whole team has been terrific; from the developers, tech support; and Amanda in sales. Very personable and appreciated!
To the questioner; the reason JING is better is video; there is nothing like this in the world that I've found; which enables (in my case stock market analysis) recording and posting to stream to our members, faster and sharper; with minimal fuss. That of course is the concept of JING as I grasp it.
I am looking forward to the premium version, which hopefully will remove the 5-min. limit somewhat; so that we don't have to do multiple videos to convey an industry group or economic analysis.
Again; kudo's for the great work; ScreenCast also.
cheers!

Happy Birthday! I love Jing. I use it to "follow my students home" as one of my sixth graders put it last year. My students love it and so do their parents. It's also a great help for students with special needs--they or their parents can hear and see the directions from class and practice in privacy.
Thank you!

Thank you, Jing team! AWESOME product. I'm in IT and use it all the time on my Mac running VMware Fusion to create quick How-Tos for various applications on Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Windows Vista by using different virtual machines. For instance, I can show the setup process for Outlook 2003 on XP and then have another for Outlook 2007 on Vista or Entourage on Mac OS X. I do this all using the Mac version of Jing and on a single machine, a MacBook. Here's a screencast I made showing how to use Jing: http://www.screencast.com/t/M8BlLL9gH
I believe Jing is also the only decent screen recording app on the Mac.
I also look forward to a premium version of Jing that does away with the 5-minute limit.
Would be neat to have a separate YouTube-like portal that would allow people to search for helpful screencasts that Jing users have agreed to freely share with the public.
Congrats and thanks again!
Cheers,
Derek

When I update to v1.5 I had a problem making the automatic update work. Here's a link to the comment I posted then:

The problem is the same for Jing 1.6. I cleared my FF browser cache, tried to update using IE7, and nada.
I love Jing, too, but really wish I could get it to auto update.
Cheers,
Tom

Hi,
I have been using your program to for a long time.
It helps me a lot.
Although i like it i have some issues really:
-Screencast.com's pages are bloated; i checked a page with a movie clip in it. It loads all kinds of libraries and stuff you really don't need for such a simple page the page is 500Kb big and takes 7 ! seconds to load... really to much.....
-Usability: i have noticed with sevral people that they tend to click on the link Try it Yourself. The reason behind this is that people are accustomed to clickable things being underlined. So if they see an inviting text they stop scanning the page.
They also miss the videorecorder metaphore on the page. They see " a blurrey image with a triangle in it " instead of the playbutton.Since the triangle doesn't change color or shape when they move the mouse over it they are not triggered to click the arrow.
A case of over-designing a metaphore.
This also has to do with the fact that people are subconsciously trained not to look at images for being clickable since that generally is an advertisement.
-Then there is the error when people are using IE6 without ActiveX: people get a javascript error TWICE so they stop the page instead of clicking trough the second message.
So when you redesign the page you might want to do the following:
-move the try it link to below, the purpose of the page is to click the video or image not to try it yourself
-redesign the play metaphore, give feedback like changing colors or size of the thing to click. Perhaps just show the normal flash or windows playcontrols.
-do not give messages with dialog boxes, instead change code of page to cope with new situation, afterall the task is simple : show an image or play a video....
-minimize all the libraries.... really to much and the load time is 7 seconds.. i used httpwatch to see what went across the line..
Oh well my 2 cents....

PLEASE add the feature that Snagit has to allow you to capture a full scrolling webpage. This feature in Snagit is what I love the most. It is a huge time and energy saver and I would love to have this feature on the mac.
PLEASE!

@Anonymous,
I made a quick video showing how to save a video locally. http://screencast.com/t/bVF6ewiy
Also, if you save a video locally and it doesn't open when you double-click it, read this post for the solution.
Finally if you want to get a variety of Jing wallpaper for your computer's desktop, check out: http://blog.jingproject.com/2007/10/jing_freebies.html
Hope that helps!
