How to Save to Your Desktop

Posted on Wednesday December 19, 2007 by Mike Curtis

Greetings! I made a video using Camtasia Studio showing how you can save a video or image to your desktop. Please pardon the audio. I used the built-in mic on my laptop while travelling and I recorded in far from ideal circumstances. How to Save to Desktop (4:24)

Thats cool now I have to use a software which makes a virtual harddrive which connects via sftp and then make the link.. (that software costs money)

It would be really nice if you could just include it..

It shouldn't be to hard although I have not looked into this a whole lot the process should be fairly the same as ftp..

Way cool. I'm also a Camtasia and Snagit user and now I am a Jing Junkie.

Kudos to you frozen-North folks. It's Dec 24th here in sunny, 78 degrees, Florida. I have an early Xmas present!!!

Ho-Ho-Ho.

Just downloaded this program, it is pretty cool. I tried to share the link, but when I attempted to paste it into an email, i couldn't get anything to show up. I am using a mac. Any ideas?

Jesse, I wish I could just make a Jing video of a Jing for you, but I hope this text with a few Jing images will solve your problem.

You are probably sharing to File. I assume you are saving the image or video to your local Mac. Here’s the part I wager is missing: Click the More ball. Click Preferences. Click File (upper right area) Here is a screenshot of the part I bet is missing. http://screencast.com/t/i9csFcEm

You might want to use the Screencast.com button if you plan on sharing an image or video with folks. Once you make the account, it’s all automatic and the share is not stored on your computer. Here’s a screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/hz3Hac5mzOP

Hope this helps you share images and video with others!
Have fun,
Mike Curtis

Hi!
I use Jing since the 1.2.4 version.

I just wanted to say that the save to desktop solution isn't properly a very friendly and usable solution. Share to file is just too stange. Share is for sharing! Save is for saving! Bost behaviors are completely diferent concepts.

I would also like to see an Jing icon in my PC Alt+tab program swith shortcut window.

Keep the good work and keep jing free please

Best regards

Hello,

Thanks for the chance to try out Jingo. I thought I could also record and save my created tutorials on disc. Since it cannot, I will wait for the Mac version of Camtasia and use it instead. I must admit though that Jingo is a very good idea. If I was doing lots of on-line teaching and trouble-shooting I would find it useful. I teach in a classroom so there won't be much chance to take full advantage of it. Good luck and all the best with the product. I will however keep checking to see more developmental news on the product. Who knows "the lights may go on".

Very helpful. Thanks. BTW, I didn't realize that I had to click on the check mark to make my settings real. I should have realized that, but it wouldn't hurt to put it in the screen itself somewhere.

Would you be able to tell us when will the beta test ends, and how much it will cost then. Just a range.
Thanks.

Hey, does anyone know the difference between Jing and Camtasia?
Are they direct competitors? Can I do all the same things with either?

i specified a local folder in my desktop as the target directory and tried to saved a couple of images. when i share, it says the url is available on the clipboard. apparently, when i paste the url to share to a friend during chat, the url is not enabled or available for viewing. is there a way for me to share an image or a video that is saved in my local folder without having to save that image or video in screencast? i can't seem to share those images from my local directory

Mike Curtis, TechSmith :

Hi there! I think I can help with a couple of questions.

Hi Yolanda, TechSmith makes both Jing and Camtasia Studio. I could go on
at length about the differences, but here's the headline. Camtasia
Studio has a lot more features and can create more professional-looking
content. You can do things like add transitions, callouts, and modify or
edit the audio tracks. You can implement zoom and pan effects and much
more. Jing was developed on the premise of making it very quick and easy
to share an image or video. So for example, in Camtasia Studio if you
wanted me to see your video, you'd have to make a number of decisions,
then produce it, then put it somewhere, and then send me the location.
With Jing on the other hand, you just Capture and Share. Done.

--------------------------------------------------------
Greetings Pauline, I know where you're coming from, and I'll try to see
if I can explain.

Even though you've "shared" your images to your desktop, your friend
cannot access your desktop. Only you can access the files on your
desktop. You'll need to send the image as an email attachment, share the
images in a place that your friend can access, such as Screencast.com,
or if you have a website, you can FTP your content to your personal
space.

A little example of how I use the share to file is that my team at TechSmith has a shared folder on the network we all can access. If I put Jing videos in there, my team can watch them, but if I share to my desktop or another private folder, no one can get to the content but me.

I know this is kind of confusing and maybe someone in the community can
say what I attempted in another way. But in closing, you've got
the right idea, the only problem is that the content is
linked to a location inaccessible to others.

I've figured out how to save new captures to my desktop with file, but is there a way that I can save captures in my history to my desk top? I made a lot of captures before I knew I could save to desktop & I've like those files too.

Thanks for any advice!

Mike Curtis, TechSmith :

Hi Jennifer, good news! You can get your captures from your History to the desktop. First open your History. Next find the image you want and double-click it. It will open in the Jing Editor window. Now, make sure that the File button is set up to save to your desktop. Click the File button, then Share. That should do the trick.

I also made a little Jing video less than 30 seconds long and no audio is required. http://screencast.com/t/8RMOF66o

Thanks Mike!

Your answer worked perfectly. I am so impressed with TechSmith products (I use Jing, Camtasia & SnagIt) AND your customer support.

Thanks SO much for doing it right!

I need to make screencasts on a mac wherein the viewer can actually read the text in a particular area of the screen. I saw an example of this in a youtube tutorial; the author said he was using Camtasia Studio. Lastly, I am macbound. My impression is that I need the panning&zooming available in Camtasia studio. What is the status of Camtasia Studio on the mac?
Thanks!
