How do I use this thing called Jing?
Posted on Thursday July 12, 2007 by Chris McQueen
Jing is a fun application to play with. If you've already installed Jing I hope it's been fun to poke around and peek at the different features. If you haven't installed Jing yet, here's an over-view of the features and how the thing works.
Music: Kevin MacLeod
Disclaimer: This video shows the very first version of Jing. So if you find yourself wondering "My Jing looks different than the one shown in that video" - it's because Jing has come a long way since then and looks slightly different now. Regardless, the video is still awesome ...

I installed Jing (and installed Network ). The icon comes up in my system tray.
If I double click or try and run the program within the menu system nothing happens, what am I doing wrong?

Very unintuitive! I cannot see how anyone could use Jing without lots of tutorials and practice. Other points:

I installed Jing on my Mac and now it does nothing but sit in the upper right hand corner of my screen. There are no buttons, no action, nothing. I cannot click on it, I cannot uninstall it, I can't force quit it. I'm going to have to reboot and hopefully can get rid of it then.
Nice try but if it doesn't work, I'm not reinstalling.

@Dan Thompson:
Sounds like there is something already using the default hotkey that Jing tries to use. Here's what you need to do to change the hotkey. (I'm showing it on the Mac, but it's the same for both platforms.)

Wonderful! Really like the trial of screencast. I never cease to be amazed by this company. Love the way the yellow dot stays at the top and out of the way. I can see lots of uses for this! Great job!

Downloaded, installed, and tried out Jing. All worked the first try. It may seem unintuitive to some, but not me.
Very interesting, I've Twittered it and will continue to try it out. Thanks to Betsy Weber for the tip-off!

The mouse will not work when capturing a screen, it flashes on the local screen and will not function so that it becomes useless. It is not apparent in the video but on the desktop it is.

Like NKR above all I get is "Jing has encountered an error and must terminate" happens whenever I try to run it (including at startup) and even if I exit all other applications. I have tried a repair install and also uninstalled/reinstalled to no effect.
When installing/running I have terminated everything on my system that I can terminate.

I have been using SnagIt and Camtasia Studio for years, and love them - so I was disappointed to find that Jing will not even start up on my standard XP Pro machine. Given the number of similar posts here, I am surprised that Techsmith publicise Jing, as it has obviously not been tested properly. Very much work in progress, but I will check back in a couple of months, as it could be an interesting addition to Techsmith's other great tool set. I hope this lapse in quality is quickly reolved.

I encountered problems to install Jing. All I got was an unspecific error message after starting up windows.
Now I have to remove the fizzled installation and will have lost more than an hour of my time.
On the video, it looked pretty useful and fast. However, with installing all the .Net Framework thing and stuff, I won't give it a second try, sorry.
Hopefully, the techsmith news won't promote tools that don't work properly in the future.

I just watched the demo video and it looks very impressive. I have used camtasia at work and would like to give this a spin at home. For those complaining about it not running out of the box I would say give it time. The product is more or less a "beta" and should be considered unstable. Although, I would expect a bit more .Net try-catching to avoid the program just ending unexpectedly. Anyways, nice job guys!

I use multiple monitors as well. As soon as I select the window I want to work with and click the capture video button my system slows to a near standstill. I've got 2G of ram and a P4 3.2 HT processor. After a CTRL ALT DEL to bring up task manager then viewing the process list it shows that jing is using almost 380M of ram for less than a minute of capture on a small window.

Love the product. Where I work, this will come in handy. A couple of things though...When you capture an image, I like the simple way you have created the ability to put arrows, frames, text, etc. but there is no way to correct a mistake that I've found. Once you place an arrow, its there unless you recapture. If there was a way to erase, move and/or edit an object once you create it, that would be great.

Really elegant. Can you capture sound when you make a video? Can you copy images to the clipboard for pasting into other appications?

The idea is great, but the interface is too proprietary. PLEASE make it possible to turn off that floating yellow ball and just use the system tray icon instead, like well-behaving applications do.
Just because you guys think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread doesn't mean we should all change our work habits to fit it.
I don't mind providing the interface as an option, heck even the default, but to not even provide an alternative is just absurd, especially since you already HAVE the tray icon. How difficult could it be to add these to the tray menu:
Capture
History
More
---
Show Yellow Ball
---
Exit
That said, I do think the idea for the program is great and I'm not completely dumping on it here. I may find myself using it quite a bit.
Thanks for your time.

Yes you can record sound (see... http://www.screencast.com/t/tYHT4J3iT). As for copying an image into your clipboard, you can't, but you can save the image and insert it as a file like you would normally. (again, http://www.screencast.com/t/VCXY3VLr)

I'm a little befuddled by what I'm reading...
For me, it worked the first time, on Windows, with two monitors. It captured the audio from my headset mic without me doing anything to make it happen (except talking into it, obviously.)
I can understand that there can be system idiosyncrasies that keep things from happening right the first time for some people, but otherwise, people who don't think this is easy to use probably haven't done video capture with anything else. It couldn't get any easier than this.
I love the yellow ball.

What do you mean you're not sure what people are talking about? Obviously a lot of them are having technical issues and are stating actual error messages they are getting. I'm not going to try this product until I see they are getting assistance. I don't want a broken product on my machine. It should at least be a working beta...

This thing is useless. I'm trying to capture a video, but it freezes the video and gives me a very long screenshot, and that's AFTER I've clicked on video. I've just wasted an hour and a half of my freakin time on this piece of junk. You need to improve this crap before I'll use it again. I can't believe it actually works for anyone. And FYI, I happen to be a computer major - I'm not a technical moron.

This looks like a really useful app and I can't wait to try it out. Very cool project, too.
However, I really dislike any user experience that forces me to watch a video for instructional content. (yes, I do see the irony!) I only needed about 20 seconds of your 1:23 video, and it would be mighty nice to have the option of quickly scanning text and images to get that. I also question the accessibility of instructional video content for visually or hearing impaired users, or even folks whose corporate computers simply do not have a sound card for whatever ridiculous reason.

Install does not seem to work on Mac OS 10.4. After I installed, a window opened with 3 files:
Alias "Auto Install"
Alias "Applications"
Jing
If I click on Alias "Auto Install" it gives me an error message that the original file "Auto Install" is missing.
If I click on Alias "Applications", it merely opens my applications folder.
If I click on the orange circle Jing, nothing happens.
Can you trouble shoot your download for Mac OS again? Something is wrong.

What a great and easy program to use. I'll admit though, the first couple minutes I was confused and didn't even know how to start using it. Soon as I saw the sun on the top left corner it started to get easier. I especially like the feature that lets me save the video captures as a swf file. This way I can quickly IM it to someone that needs quick help. I've had so many cases where the person I'm helping can't follow with what I'm typing or describing by phone. I've been looking for a program like this for so long. Great Job everyone!

Even if Jing can't help, does anyone know a way I can edit my camera videos? By edit I mean cut time off the beginning or end. Thanks!

I have used and taught Camtasia for several years and love it, but sometimes I just need to answer a technical question from a user that doesn't demand a more lengthy and/or re-usable video. In those cases, I use Jing to record a quick demo, then just share the link. I'm surprised by the people who commented that it's "unintuitive", since it only takes three simple steps to capture, record, and share! I find it quick and easy to use.

If I were to guess, it sounds like you have an internal microphone on your laptop. My suggestion is to use an external microphone; either a headset or webcam with a mic (that's what I use).
You can also mute the recording, but that means you can't record your voice either.

Jing is usually simple to install. Both on the Mac and PC it is a standard installation process.
Now, just to let you know, Jing does not support webcams.
I'll see if we can find a better way to show the installation process so you know what to expect.

I've installed but yet to fully use, however, the comments I've read here suggest a few system bits and pieces need to be sorted by some. Basically, with audio it is not good to have two drivers enabled, so check your device manager and those with audio problems may find that they have a generic and propriety driver enabled. I strongly recommend that the generic one be disabled, ( especially if you're using Vista.) The same applies for graphic drivers. Quite often I've found things work on Vista once I've backed up and taken a look at what a particular software package requires, and it usually transpires that Vista is still somewhat beta. You only need to google vista problems to see what I mean. As to jing, I have no problems with the way the good folk here have chosen to access jing, rather refreshing. Now to try it out proper ~ the son overseas is having problems with his computer so the howto's are about to go video.

Awesome app. The best screen capture I've come across bar none on the Mac (vs. SnapzPro and iShowU is what I'm comparing this too). There is one final cherry I need to locate to finish this near-perfect experiece of an ice-cream sundae of a program.
How in the name of Hank can you capture SYSTEM audio (not internal or line-in microphones) but direct system audio with Jing on a Mac (OS 10.5). This generally works with "soundflower" audio drivers, but not with Jing....
Please let me know if you find out.
Thanks for this otherwise - it's easy, convenient and smooth as olive oil on hard-boiled eggs!

Once you take a capture you'll get a preview window (whether it be an image or video) from there, click Share and then you'll see a progress bar. Once the progress bar is done, Jing will place the link on your clipboard, so all you have to do is paste the link (ctrl+v on PC, cmd+v on Mac).

Hi Whitney,
Are you on a Mac?
If so, I bet Jing is hiding up in your menu in the upper right, sort of by your clock. Right here: http://screencast.com/t/kR7J4nRe
I also like using hotkeys. Then I don't even have to bother with clicking the sun or small icon. Here's a link about that: http://blog.jingproject.com/2007/11/jing_hotkey.html
Finally, I made a quick screencast that shows how to get the sun back should you want to do that: http://screencast.com/t/Gv1WmDYka
If you are on Windows, this video might still be helpful, but it’ll be in your system tray.
Hope that helps, and thanks for your interest in Jing!

I downloaded and tried it out. Want very much to like it because I can see it being very helpful to me. However, when recording video on my mac and one of the actions I wanted to record was me scrolling down on a website page, the resulting video I recorded was very choppy, much like making a cartoon with a flipbook. Very herky-jerky, not very smooth at all. As a result the arrow cursor would disappear and reappear, making following along with what I was trying to show very difficult. Is there anyway to fix this?

I just downloaded Jing for Mac OSX and I can't get it to open. Did I do something wrong?

I'm on a Mac. I installed Jing, signed up and activated my Screencast account. I even put Jing on my dock. I click on the icon and nothing happens.

Oh great, Mac OS crashed. Had to manual shut down. Now I see the Jing sun on the upper right-hand corner

Hi Marie and Jan,
There's a chance you have a related problem. Try checking out the video here: http://blog.jingproject.com/2008/06/hey_thereif_youre_using_jing.html
I hope it proves helpful!

Great app. One suggestion is to add the ability to capture everything in a browser window - including the stuff that is not visible on the screen.
