The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere.

How do I use this thing called Jing?

Posted on Thursday July 12, 2007 by Chris McQueen

Jing is a fun application to play with.  If you've already installed Jing I hope it's been fun to poke around and peek at the different features. If you haven't installed Jing yet, here's an over-view of the features and how the thing works.

Disclaimer: This video shows the very first version of Jing. So if you find yourself wondering "My Jing looks different than the one shown in that video" - it's because Jing has come a long way since then and looks slightly different now. Regardless, the video is still awesome ...

Alan McCormick :

I installed Jing (and installed Network ). The icon comes up in my system tray.

If I double click or try and run the program within the menu system nothing happens, what am I doing wrong?

Dene :

I installed Jing on my Mac and now it does nothing but sit in the upper right hand corner of my screen. There are no buttons, no action, nothing. I cannot click on it, I cannot uninstall it, I can't force quit it. I'm going to have to reboot and hopefully can get rid of it then.

Nice try but if it doesn't work, I'm not reinstalling.

Wonderful! Really like the trial of screencast. I never cease to be amazed by this company. Love the way the yellow dot stays at the top and out of the way. I can see lots of uses for this! Great job!

Installed (and .Net 3 as required), only able to get "this program caused an error and it will be terminated, send error to Microsoft. Tried also lates Win updates, same situation.

Quote floater
Carol Haynes :

Like NKR above all I get is "Jing has encountered an error and must terminate" happens whenever I try to run it (including at startup) and even if I exit all other applications. I have tried a repair install and also uninstalled/reinstalled to no effect.

When installing/running I have terminated everything on my system that I can terminate.

Running Windows XP Pro SP2 (up to date as of today)

I have been using SnagIt and Camtasia Studio for years, and love them - so I was disappointed to find that Jing will not even start up on my standard XP Pro machine. Given the number of similar posts here, I am surprised that Techsmith publicise Jing, as it has obviously not been tested properly. Very much work in progress, but I will check back in a couple of months, as it could be an interesting addition to Techsmith's other great tool set. I hope this lapse in quality is quickly reolved.

I just watched the demo video and it looks very impressive. I have used camtasia at work and would like to give this a spin at home. For those complaining about it not running out of the box I would say give it time. The product is more or less a "beta" and should be considered unstable. Although, I would expect a bit more .Net try-catching to avoid the program just ending unexpectedly. Anyways, nice job guys!

I use multiple monitors as well. As soon as I select the window I want to work with and click the capture video button my system slows to a near standstill. I've got 2G of ram and a P4 3.2 HT processor. After a CTRL ALT DEL to bring up task manager then viewing the process list it shows that jing is using almost 380M of ram for less than a minute of capture on a small window.

Quote floater
Heather :

Love the product. Where I work, this will come in handy. A couple of things though...When you capture an image, I like the simple way you have created the ability to put arrows, frames, text, etc. but there is no way to correct a mistake that I've found. Once you place an arrow, its there unless you recapture. If there was a way to erase, move and/or edit an object once you create it, that would be great.

Quote floater
Selwyn Rabins :

Really elegant. Can you capture sound when you make a video? Can you copy images to the clipboard for pasting into other appications?

Quote floater
Judy Brophy :

Once I found it, it worked great. Very intuitive. I can see it working well with faculty who are technically challenged.

Quote floater
Andria :

I'm not very tech savvy and this worked absolutely perfectly the first time I tried!! I don't know what everyone else is talking about. I didn't even watch the demo until after I had it started and working. Very cool product!!!

Quote floater
Phreqd :

What do you mean you're not sure what people are talking about? Obviously a lot of them are having technical issues and are stating actual error messages they are getting. I'm not going to try this product until I see they are getting assistance. I don't want a broken product on my machine. It should at least be a working beta...

Quote floater
Phil :

Couldn't connect when I attempted to "share" - message was "There was a problem connecting to the Web. Your capture was not shared but is in your History." Not a big surprise. We are behind a username/password protected firewall here at work.

today's download & install is OK - dead easy to use, quite intuitive interface (once you see the yellow ball at top of screen). Love it already, and will use this a lot - will help my testers record bug scenarios and such. Great!

Jim Stutsman :

My only regret when migrating from PC to Mac was leaving SnagIt and Camtasia behind. Thanks for giving me new hope with Jing!

Quote floater
Bonnie :

This thing is useless. I'm trying to capture a video, but it freezes the video and gives me a very long screenshot, and that's AFTER I've clicked on video. I've just wasted an hour and a half of my freakin time on this piece of junk. You need to improve this crap before I'll use it again. I can't believe it actually works for anyone. And FYI, I happen to be a computer major - I'm not a technical moron.

Quote floater
Chris McQueen :

@ Robin

There's no 'undo' button yet. But you can hit ctrl+U and it will undo your last change.

Quote floater
Andrea :

This looks like a really useful app and I can't wait to try it out. Very cool project, too.

However, I really dislike any user experience that forces me to watch a video for instructional content. (yes, I do see the irony!) I only needed about 20 seconds of your 1:23 video, and it would be mighty nice to have the option of quickly scanning text and images to get that. I also question the accessibility of instructional video content for visually or hearing impaired users, or even folks whose corporate computers simply do not have a sound card for whatever ridiculous reason.

Install does not seem to work on Mac OS 10.4. After I installed, a window opened with 3 files:

Alias "Auto Install"
Alias "Applications"
Jing

If I click on Alias "Auto Install" it gives me an error message that the original file "Auto Install" is missing.

If I click on Alias "Applications", it merely opens my applications folder.

If I click on the orange circle Jing, nothing happens.

Can you trouble shoot your download for Mac OS again? Something is wrong.

I've used SnagIt for a few years on my PC. I'm glad there is something like it for the Mac.

I miss the ability to enlarge the image to do some editing and the ability to save the image to a number of formats.

Thank you

What a great and easy program to use. I'll admit though, the first couple minutes I was confused and didn't even know how to start using it. Soon as I saw the sun on the top left corner it started to get easier. I especially like the feature that lets me save the video captures as a swf file. This way I can quickly IM it to someone that needs quick help. I've had so many cases where the person I'm helping can't follow with what I'm typing or describing by phone. I've been looking for a program like this for so long. Great Job everyone!

Can I edit a video? It's a wav file from my digital camera, and I want to shorten it. It's 730MB, and I can only put 700 on a CD, and I can't post it on YouTube, either. Even if Jing can't help, does anyone know a way I can edit my camera videos? By edit I mean cut time off the beginning or end. Thanks!

I had zero trouble installing--it works just as described. I'm an IT manager who is tired answering questions that start off with "How do I...?" It work like a dream--has a very intuitive interface--a very good start. I will be looking for interesting new features in the years to come.

Make that another person with the same problem. I do not see any preference options since removing the sun from my desktop. I wish I could switch it back.

I like the yellow dot and I can drag it to any border of the screen . The arrows can be moved and deleted by using the "delete" key. I love it, but in the future, I would not pay to store my images since I only have a personal use for blogging, etc.

Having same problems as Meagan Godfrey. I have loaded it on my work computer and capture video works fine there. So I loaded Jing on my home computer so that I could capture streaming video at home. (Can't use streaming video at work.) I can't get it to record internal or external sounds on the home computer. The video is very choppy too and I'm running on high speed cable modem. I'm sure it is a settings issue, but I can't seem to find where I need to go. Audio looks fine in the control panel. Can you Jing me with directions on how to fix my audio problem?

Would love to have a copy to clip board option like other screen capture programs. I work in a Lotus Notes shop and its much easier to copy and paste a screenshot then insert a image.

Quote floater
Tobi :

I have used and taught Camtasia for several years and love it, but sometimes I just need to answer a technical question from a user that doesn't demand a more lengthy and/or re-usable video. In those cases, I use Jing to record a quick demo, then just share the link. I'm surprised by the people who commented that it's "unintuitive", since it only takes three simple steps to capture, record, and share! I find it quick and easy to use.

Awesome app. The best screen capture I've come across bar none on the Mac (vs. SnapzPro and iShowU is what I'm comparing this too). There is one final cherry I need to locate to finish this near-perfect experiece of an ice-cream sundae of a program.
How in the name of Hank can you capture SYSTEM audio (not internal or line-in microphones) but direct system audio with Jing on a Mac (OS 10.5). This generally works with "soundflower" audio drivers, but not with Jing....
Please let me know if you find out.

Thanks for this otherwise - it's easy, convenient and smooth as olive oil on hard-boiled eggs!

Hi Whitney,

Are you on a Mac?

If so, I bet Jing is hiding up in your menu in the upper right, sort of by your clock. Right here: http://screencast.com/t/kR7J4nRe

I also like using hotkeys. Then I don't even have to bother with clicking the sun or small icon. Here's a link about that: http://blog.jingproject.com/2007/11/jing_hotkey.html

Finally, I made a quick screencast that shows how to get the sun back should you want to do that: http://screencast.com/t/Gv1WmDYka

If you are on Windows, this video might still be helpful, but it’ll be in your system tray.

Hope that helps, and thanks for your interest in Jing!

I downloaded and tried it out. Want very much to like it because I can see it being very helpful to me. However, when recording video on my mac and one of the actions I wanted to record was me scrolling down on a website page, the resulting video I recorded was very choppy, much like making a cartoon with a flipbook. Very herky-jerky, not very smooth at all. As a result the arrow cursor would disappear and reappear, making following along with what I was trying to show very difficult. Is there anyway to fix this?

Great app. One suggestion is to add the ability to capture everything in a browser window - including the stuff that is not visible on the screen.

Hey I like this Jing thing. Hope there will be some way to edit the videos in the future though. Just one thing. When I save the video as a .swf file on my mac nothing is able to open it (yes I have QT pro). Neither will it upload to YouTube. Any ideas anyone?

I just signed up and I'm wondering am I forced to use screencast? The reason I'm asking is I work for a state university and I would want to house all the videos either locally on my workstation or on an internally-managed web site - without storing them anywhere in the outside world.

A friend advised me to use JING.
The installation was done while we were on SKYPE. All is done and we benefitted from it after the very first second.
MY question is, why not have the option
(in preference) to generate different types of files (e.g JPG.GIF) instead of 1 (i.e PNG).
Thank you

I was Googling an alternative to CamStudio, I love your product BUT, I can't pan, there are other parts of the screen that I want to show out, so I hope you add a panning/dragging feature on this program and I'll definitely 100% convert to Jing
