Getting Started with Jing
Posted on Tuesday July 10, 2007 by Matt Dyer
The Quick and Simple Version
- Download, install, and run Jing.
- Click the capture button, and select something on your screen to share.
- Choose to grab an image or record a video.
- Edit your image or preview your video.
- Hit Share to upload your file to Screencast.com. The URL is copied to your Clipboard.
- Paste the URL into your conversations or anywhere else you want to share.
The Illustrated But Still Really Simple Version
First things first; download and install Jing. The PC client requires .NET 3.0 framework from Microsoft. If you don't have it, the Jing installer downloads it for you during the install. Once Jing is installed, you're ready to get started.
Odds and Ends
Screencast.com
Jing files are hosted on Screencast.com. To use Jing, you'll need to sign up for a Screencast.com account. This will provide you with 200 MB of storage and 1GB per month of bandwidth. The normal trial account for Screencast.com has a 60 day limit, but to get the most out of the Jing Project, and to share our appreciation for your feedback, we're offering a trial account with no expiration until the end of the Jing Project (date to be determined). Enjoy.
Managing your History
Your History is where all your captures are sent after you Share or Save. Here you can re-Share, Save, or Delete your previous captures. Deleting a capture deletes it from your History as well as Screencast.com if it has been shared. This breaks any links to this media that you may have shared. Shift or control click for multiple deletion.
Feedback
We want to know what you think of Jing and how you're using it. Comments, criticisms, compliments... anything. We want to know how you think Jing can be improved. Getting your feedback is the whole point of the Jing Project.
To send us your feedback, make frequent use of the Feedback button in the More ball to go to the Web feedback form. Another great way of getting your feedback straight to the product team is to comment on the Jing Project blog.
Getting Help
To get help with Jing, click on the Help button in the More button. There you can find a link to this post as well as a link called How do I... that links to all the tips, tricks, and training posts on the Jing Project blog. Be sure to comment, to let us know how helpful the posts are.

It is easier to use than Camtasia -- but you can't edit the video. This makes screen casting so EASY!

It would be great if there was not a perpetual fee from screencast. Would be nice if Screencast would allow 10MB+ free (especially for us educators who don't make squat! :-)
I have my own server. I would be useful if I could set it up to publish automatically to it.
If screencast had a free account (not the 60 day trial), I would use it; I will stick with Camtasia Studio 4 for now.

Some quicks answers to a few questions I see popping up here and from our feedback form:
How do I re-share what I've captured? There are three buttons on the Jing Launcher; Capture, History, and More. When you click History, you'll see thumbnails of all the captures you've shared or saved. There are buttons on each item to share, save or delete (which removes it from the History as well as Screencast.com).
Do I have to pay for a Screencast.com account? Nope. The Jing Project is very much a work in progress (that's why it's a project). We want your feedback, so we're providing a free account that has 200 MB of storage and 1 GB of bandwidth (bandwidth renews monthly) for the duration of the project. We're not sure how long that will be right now, but longer than the 60 day is a pretty good guess.
Can I change output formats? Not right now. If this is something you'd like to see, we'd love to hear about it. We chose to use PNG and SWF as our formats because they are lossless and easy to share. SWF in particular works well for Jing, as we're able to encode it while we record. This means there is no "encoding" step before sharing your videos.

Still trying to figure it out.
Editing tools seem rudimentary with no option to delete or undo. Am I missing something here? Otherwise it is get the edit right the first time.

So what gap is trying to be bridged here? File size restrictions on e-mail I suppose? In other words, if I have access to LiveMeetings and SharePoint, I can easily share screen-captured video and images anyways. All I do is use SnagIt to capture my video or Screenshot and upload them to our Intranet. Or, if we need realtime sharing, we do a live meeting, or use terminal services direct to our machines or servers.
I just don't think this has an advantage for me.

It seems to be about public sharing. Many computers users don't have this model, but you can't swing a cat around without hitting a social-networking site; and maybe those folks would want to share something on their screens -- code, IMs, games playin.
I could see the open source contributing community picking it up for some forms of prototyping; "Don't worry about installing my branch of the trunk yet, with its 69 dependencies, here is a rough proof of concept on my environment -- give me feedback."

Techsmith team, I have to admit. I drank the kool-aid on your brilliance quite a while ago...and here you go again, being all impressive and helpful. Ah, fresh cup!
I'm an ed tech geek that loves your tools, and can imagine the rich feedback our distributed instructors can give learners - and how it will actually happen when the process of recording and publishing feedback is this simple. There are lots of great tools being developed, but simplicity and availability are key- you've hit it square on the sunshine for me with this one. :)
Thank you for your great efforts!

When I run Jing, I immediately get an error message: "Jing has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.". (and closes).
I am using Win XP (SP2), and the installer downloaded and installed .NET 3.0. I have also rebooted my machine since the install, which has made no difference - any suggestions?
Thanks

Just beginning to try this out and two early comments:
1. Your blog background is dark and your text is invisible without Cntrl+A to high highlight text.
2. It doesn't seem to be intuitive on how to size the image capture.
Still learning.
Looks interesting.

Might just use camtasia to record the problem...if any one is interested.

Techsmith should definitely let testers know that they are not bound by the 60 day trial on Screencast. I would seriously test it out if I were promised a free 12-18 months on Screencast.
One more thing: that little hemisphere that stays at the top of the screen has to go. Allow users to select those same options from the tray at the bottom (on a right or left click).

This application has tremendous use for anyone who has a parent or grandparent that needs to do something on their computer. Instead of talking them through the steps, we can just open an IM with them (probably on yahoo), and then send them the screen that they should see. Unfortunately, I can't download software at work, so I'll have to wait until I get home to try this out. I'm looking forward to it.

your comment: "p.s.

What language settings should be changed? Jing can not be started (no settings available). Language settings from "NET 3.0" or from Windows XP?

I would like to be able to copy and past into an email from Jing - how do I do that?
Also, is Screencast the only option? I am not particularly fond of the screencast experience so far -- only because one of the pictures I uploaded from my computer turned into a GIANT PICTURE like the ones that people email me and it's impossible to see the picture because it's so big you ahve to scroll around...
A Jing-snagged picture was the correct size, but I don't know how to send the picture, just the URL -- is that the whole idea?
thanks

I'd have to say that Jing is a very cool thing. The best thing about it is that it is VERY simple to use. No one has to worry about AVI files, file sizes, MPEG, or any of the kind of techy stuff that nerds always unwittingly force the rest of us to try to learn. So this was for me a frustration-free computer experience, and I can count those on the fingers of one hand. All in all, perfect for a dummy (like me). Now I'll be sending TechSmith videos of the difficulties I've been having with Camtasia Studio 4, lol.

I like the little "hemisphere"--looks like the Sun peeking out on my screen, which works really well with my desktop image; but I agree with the other poster that the same options should be offered from the tray icon (can't have too many options [well, most of the time], or ways to get to them). As others, looking forward to more features and "stuff". As far as MS .NET being 'poison' is concerned: "one man's potion...", but, yes, a Linux version would certainly be extra nice. Thanks!

Net 3 as part of Jing or as an individual entity installation is problematic at best of times under certain Windows environments :see Microsoft Net 3 website.I already had net 3 installed.Jing installed flawlessly and works as well as SnagIt but is eaier.Click the "SUN" and click 'Capture'.End 'Capture' and click 'History' to see recordings whether still snaps or screen video captures to upload one at a time or delete one or more at a time from your computer as well as Screencast simultaneously.
To get a smoother installation if you do not have Net 3 installed already , download Jing and save it somewhere you can find it other than Temp folder
[delete later if you want].
Download Net 3 from Microsoft directly and install it via the disliked Internet Explorer and reboot.Double click the saved Jing file to install it easily. If previous installs failed ,uninstall Net 3 and Jing thru Add/Remove Control Panel applet and start fresh as suggested above.Jing works great for me although it is sluggish starting if I have too many explorer windows open.

@KDoll--Anyone you send the link to can view your image or video, but the URL is not discoverable (no one can browse back up to other things you have shared).
@Barry--If you can't delete items from your History (which would also delete items from Screencast.com), you can log in to your Screencast.com account and delete items from your Jing folder. Failed uploads shouldn't take up any of your storage space, however.

I couldnt' install JING because the popup window said it wasn't able to install .NET Framework 3.0 and that I should go to Microsoft website and download it first.
Well, I was not able to determine what exactly I needed at Microsoft... which led to this suggestion: maybe you could put a link to the download that I need (and I assume many others?) on your website, rather than a referral to the other site.
Also - my company blocks streaming video, so I was not able to watch your demos... maybe you could offer a 2nd way to view the video - as in a download, or a series of screen shots?
Thanks.

Jing does not install properly on Mac OSX at the moment. I download and install it. Then a folder opens up with 3 files - 1 title Bling which is a big orange circle that does nothing when you click on it, another title Alias Application which does not but open your application folder, and another titled Auto Install that pops up the error message that the original file for "Alias Install" cannot be found.

Neat idea! Great project! Very, very useful.
However, I'm right on board with "hjmler", "Glenn", et al: a Linux distro is a must have. I'm working regularly in Max and Windoze, but spend most of my time Linux (as do many of my immediate peers); we'd LOVE to use this, but it's just not convenient to have reboot, move to another box, or launch a virtualization, you know?
Thanks muchly,

Hey, this is great! Too many times have people asked 'how do you do that', 'what settings should I use' etc and the hassle of screen grabbing, editing the image, saving as a JPG and then passing the file over to them - this saves all that hassle!!!
But currently, it's locked into the screencast account - which isn't always going to be free. I have personal web hosting as well as an .Mac account that I could use as the online storage if the option was available.
If you keep the jing app free but insist on a screencast account definitely not economically viable for the light user for this sort of thing (like me). I'd much rather pay a one off fee to buy the app and then use my existing hosting.
This interface is great and easy - except that there doesn't seem to be a way to exit out of a tool without making more arrows or text.
For me, I would place my cursor at the object that I want to point to with an arrow - but the arrow head is on the other side. :S
I've just managed to see the 'undo' and 'redo' buttons which are definitely needed with the precise fiddling.
I certainly look forward to more on the jing project! Keep up the good work!

The Jing first-time login window disappears in Exposé (Mac OS X), so there is no way you can ever find it back. And unless you find it back, restarting Jing doesn't work.

The 5 minute time limit for video's is ridiculous. Moreover, under Mac OS X, the video capturing often goes wrong way before you even reach the 5 minute limit. Even under very good system circumstances.

It's definitely a neat concept, but I'm still scratching my head trying to think of exactly when I'll use this versus SnagIt or Camtasia -- especially given that I have no audio capabilities.
One other note -- my IT guys have already expressed concerns about the storage of "confidential information" (even if it is only in screen shots)on the screencast server rather than an in-house box.

The new version available today took away the ability to save captures directly to the local drive without going through ScreenCast. Why have you done this? To improve ScreenCast usage? Jing was great right until today.

Richard--We did remove the Save button, but only because we reworked how Jing saves locally. In order to make it more like our other functionality, Save is now the File output. For more information on sharing to a file, see this blog post.

I've been using Jing for a couple of months now and love it. However, i'm all of a sudden getting a very quick playback of the entire video, when I test the clip before e-mailing it. It seems to be working fine for the recipient. Also I did another clip this morning and when I tested it on another machine, it just began playing rather than the normal jing screen with the Play arrow to begin watching the clip >
by the way these clips were uploaded to screencast.

I do not see the difference between SnagIt and Jing. I save SnagIt's out to my FTP site and Web Server and share them that way. Why would I ever want to pay to use someone elses storage. I would agree with the previous comment. Where is the SnagIt Editor and Catelog?
Need more detail on benefits of Jing over SnagIt, Unless Jing is going to contain a video editor?
Help me understand and thanks. -R-

It's easy to start and easy to handle without reading a lot. But I feel a bit like "big brother is watching you" when I catch a movie. So many information about me, even the noise around me is transmitted to a remote server. I would prefer to get a PDF or a quicktime file as I am used to when I a take a usual screenshot.

I recall trying this some time ago, but the reliance on Screencast made it a non-starter. Now, I gather, you've made it possible to save the captures locally - this is good, but in the process you've removed support for Win2K. Bad move lads - score 1 for kissing MS's corporate ass.
I /was/ considering purchasing one of your other capture programs, but I'm now seriously reconsidering that decision in light of the above.

I like it. For my $.02USD, the success against projects like Wink will be how cheap it is. This type of solution is going to become fairly ubiquitous into and of itself, with the goal being sharing video/screen caps. If every social networking site want to provide their own interface to upload to their particular site, count me out. If you REALLY want this to take off and be useful (read: sellable outside of screencast users), allow upload to other sites, like Google/YouTube/etc. If you did that, your download servers would be overwhelmed. if that is NOT your intent, please let me know asap, so I can stop spending time with the product. I know what I need, and it would really give me bad mojo towards Techsmith to be strung along with a good product that ends up being hamstrung because they do not want to share MY output, or they make me do it manually. I should be able to configure settings for flickr, youtube, google, blogger, live spaces, etc., and select which ones (notice the plural) to which I want to upload my content.
Thanks, looking forward to the real thing!

I will second with the other users' ranting on the 5 min. recording limit. You have stated that jing is a freeware product atm, and that quite simply means that the software should be released unlimited. If you didn't want users to pile up huge files in the server, then all you guys had to do was to limit the size of the captures uploaded on the server side, ie. the web page could tell you that there's a file size limit... Jing is a great piece of software, but it seems that it's creators are bent solely on ensuring future sales when it goes out for sale by limiting the so called "free-ware" version...

Anon--For some reason, we're being picked up by AVG antivirus software as containing a trojan. We're not sure why, but we're talking to AVG to get it sorted out.
Despite what AVG says, we don't have a trojan in our .exe.

Jing is a wonderful tool for fast easy communications. I am a very slow typer and use your system as a reporting and collaboration tool.
I am a study of the 4 hour work week and executive summary reports that took 2 hours now take 5 min.
I actually like the 5 min limit as it keeps me sending message that are short and to the point.
Next steps for me are to try and minimize travel time and costs for sales presentations
One person+ screencast instead of 2 people at a sales meeting will have huge benefits for me in time management.
Very Well Done!

Jing slows my computer considerably. I need more than 5 minutes of recording, I need 1 hour.
the playback is not sized correctly.
at first the voice was not in sync with the video, but that may be being caused by my slowed computer.
on the positive side. Its very easy to use.
if you can somehow give more bells and whistles, with less restrictions. you have a dynamite product here. Please keep me posted with updates and upgrades. thank you.

Whilst this project is in the early stages and should be given more chance to develop, it has a long way to go to catch up with (if ever) http://www.Vyew.com.
Vyew is a fantastic program to work with, but it will be interesting to watch this Jing project develop.
BTW I have no vested interest in Vyew, but just thought that some posters here might like to know and take a view. Just a user.

I am a teacher and this worked great in my classroom! I was able to capture a few steps I wanted the kids to recreate in their Power Points. We repeated the video while I walked the classroom working with students individually. This made getting through the steps much easier. It was like I was duplicated. I am a little concerned about the cost however. Right now, it's free...whoopee....will this be a hard sell with the administration if it costs via screencast in the future?

WOW! This is great. I´ve immediately downloaded and installed on my computer and going to test it right now. It allows me to do something that I´ve really liked to do for a while now.
Although there are currently other tools out there doing the same tasks, but it seems Jing has something new. And it looks like it is dead simple.
Thank you guys for providing such an awesome program. I really appreciate that.
Keep up the good work!

I'm a teacher and want to use Jing for a Pro-D presentation. I gather (from other comments here) that I can't record audio. If that's the case, the it really limits usefulness compared to other screen capture software. (or if I'm wrong, can you tell me how to do it??)

Hi Mike,
You can record audio. If you want voice audio it should be pretty straightforward. Jing assumes most people are going to want to talk and explain things, so we look for your default audio input. If you have a laptop with a built-in mic, I bet you're good to go with no effort. Same thing if you have a desktop with some kind of mic plugged in.
Where it can get a little tricky is if you want system audio. If that's the case, check out this blog post: http://blog.jingproject.com/2008/05/recording_windows_system_audio.html
Good luck with the presentation!

Your clipboard is something of a funny invisible thing. I'll use an example from a word processor to illustrate.
Let's say you have a paragraph you want to move. You select it, and then click Edit > Cut. When you do this, the text is on your "clipboard." You then move the cursor to the area where you want the paragraph to be, and click Edit > Paste. Yay! Your text is back!
So, with Jing, you capture an image, and the url or image goes to your clipboard in this example. Where did it go?? It might seem like it disappeared! It's ok though--the image or URL is on your clipboard waiting for you to tell it where to go. You can PASTE the image or URL into an email, word-processing document, etc.
Does that help? I like to use short cuts too. For Windows you can paste things from your clipboard by holding down the CTRL (control) key and then pressing the V key.
I'm confident you'll be pasting Jing stuff like a pro in no time!

As sole HELP DESK support for my company, I'm finding it much easier to send a JING that I've recorded to a user rather than visiting them at their desk. I have accumulated a dozen or more FAQ answers - everything from editing an email signature to changing a password - and it has been a big time saver for me. This is a perfect companion for Snagit and I'm looking forward to seeing more enhancements.
