Troubleshooting

Posted on Friday July 20, 2007

This post will try and track known issues with the Jing Project. It will also be updated as we figure out answers and/or new problems. We're also tracking bugs in our Support System.

Windows Client

Crash when launching:

FIXED IN 1.2.4 There's currently a bug where Jing expects the date format to be English United States (M/D/YYYY). This means that if your Windows settings are set to anything else, we crash with a System.FormatException. We're currently working on getting a fix out for this as soon as we can.

After capturing, preview window does not display correctly:

FIXED IN 1.2.6If you have Windows set to use large fonts, the Image and Video preview windows do not display correctly. It looks like the bottom of the window is cut off. This is currently being investigated.

Install hangs or fails with .NET install:

Installing the .NET Framework 3.0 before installing Jing may help with this. It can be downloaded from Microsoft here. After that is finished, the Jing install should work.

Unable to register hotkey message:

(Partially)FIXED IN 1.2.4When launching Jing you may get messages that the hotkey can not be registered. This may occur if you've launched 2 copies of Jing, or you have another program that is registering the same hotkey. As of 1.2.4 you can only run 1 copy of Jing at a time.

Jing stops responding after standby or locked mode:

FIXED IN 1.2.5On XP, when you return from standby mode or a locked machine, Jing’s ‘sun’ and/or History window may stop responding or stop drawing correctly. The only work around right now is to restart Jing. This is currently being investigated.

Unable to send links via MSN Messenger service:

WORKAROUND IN 1.2.6Currently when trying to send links via MSN Messenger service, the user sending the links will see them in the chat window, but they are never received by the other party. This also seems to be happening for clients that interact with MSN such as Trillian. This is currently being investigated. Updated 8/08: We have a workaround for this issue. Read about it here.

Audio input device is incorrect:

When recording a video, Jing currently uses the first audio input device found. There is currently no way to configure this in the software and we are currently looking for a temporary solution.

Mac Client

Be sure to check the release notes for version 1.2.5 for details recent fixes.

Can't move the Sun:

You can drag it by clicking in its center, or if you first hold down the Shift key. It can only be placed in certain locations: any corner, and along edges except where the Dock or Menubar are.

Video recording does not record sound:

Be sure the Mute button has not been turned on. Also, in your System Preferences, check the Sound panel's Input tab, and be sure the microphone you want to use is the chosen device for sound input.

Video does not record

We are currently investigating a few reports of this issue. Please check if your audio device is turned on. If turning it on fixes this problem for you, please let us know via feedback.

Unable to send links via MSN Messenger service:

FIXED IN 1.2.6Please see the note in the Windows section above.

Microsoft Messenger Filtering Workaround

Posted on Wednesday August 8, 2007

Shortly after we launched, it came to our attention that Microsoft Messenger silently filtered out the URLs generated by Jing. We haven't confirmed it with Microsoft, but from our testing it looks like any link with .scr in the URL will be removed from IMs. This is the extension on Windows screen savers; it is presumably filtered to keep users from inadvertently downloading malicious screen saver files.

We're currently working on a more permanent solution, but as a workaround, we suggest removing the "www." from the URL pasted to your Clipboard. Without the "www.", the link works normally and because the "." is no longer in front of "screencast.com" it won't be caught in the Messenger filter.

Screencast.com Scheduled Maintenance (Site Will Be Down) - April 8th

Posted on Monday April 7, 2008

As with all fine tuned systems, Screencast.com needs a slight tweaking of the dials to keep it running in top condition.

The site will be unavailable for roughly one hour beginning tomorrow, April 8th, at 7am Eastern Time.

Please note that if you try to upload to Screencast.com from Jing during this time, you will likely recieve an upload error. However, those captures will be readily available for you in your Jing History and can be re-uploaded when Screencast.com becomes available again.

Thanks for your patience,
The Jing Team

Jing: 100 Best Products of 2008

Posted on Friday September 5, 2008

Good day everyone. We got this nice trophy in the mail the other day. A few months ago PC World named the Jing Project as no. 100 in their list of the best products of 2008. (We just squeaked in!) I guess that means there is lots of opportunity to move up.

There were a lot of cool products on their list, and of course, a lot of opinions about what else should have been on the list. What are some technology products you couldn't get along without? I've recently fallen in love with SynergyKM. It's freeware that lets me use my same mouse and keyboard to go between my Mac and PC--and better yet, I can copy and paste text (ahem--like Jing URLs) from one to the other.

Audio FAQs

Posted on Wednesday December 3, 2008

Hello everyone,

Lately we've seen an increase in audio-related issues and questions. I thought I would summarize some of the key points and leave you with some links and resources for additional help.

Does Jing record audio with video? Absolutely. If your microphone isn't working, something's wrong. Jing looks for the default audio input device. Usually that's the microphone. Check your Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac) and make sure that the default audio input device is your microphone. If you need help, try the topics and people at TechSmith Tech Support. Here's a link to their Jing topics.

Can I record my system audio? Jing can usually record system audio. Why the italics? Well, especially with Windows Vista there are a lot of "if's" and conditions based on your sound card and more. Keep in mind though--for both Windows and Mac, Jing was not really designed to capture system audio. We focused on voice capture and keeping the audio files small. I want to also make clear that you can't switch back and forth between microphone and system audio once you start recording.

Here are two posts that explain more:

Recording System Audio with Jing--Windows Edition

Recording System Audio with Jing--Mac OS X Edition

If you're the kind of person who's interested in doing a lot of more advanced audio work and want to really be in control, you could research some kind of mixer that would work with your computer. Here's just one example.

Synergy and Jing: A Great Combo

Posted on Thursday December 18, 2008

I wanted to share a free (GNU General Public License) program called Synergy. I use Synergy many times every day--usually in conjunction with Jing. I use two computers at work--a Mac and a PC. (Synergy will work between two Windows computers or two Mac too.) I often want to make a Jing of something on Windows, but I'm in a conversation or document on my Mac.

Synergy allows you to copy text from one computer to another. I don't know how much time Synergy has saved me, but was enough to inspire me to donate. Here's one example of how I just used Synergy. You see that graphic above? Well, I made that using Snagit on my Windows machine. (Synergy also allows me to use my Mac mouse and keyboard.) Now, I suppose I could transfer that image file to my Mac via email, network drive, usb drive...but really all I care about is the embed code for that image.

Here's the exciting part:

Using my Mac mouse and keyboard I fire up my Jing hotkey and capture the image, then use my Screencast.com embed code button. My cursor wanders back over to this blog entry, and PASTE. Done!

I can't really say to you that installing and setting up Synergy is a snap, but they do have some good documentation. If you're on Mac be sure to also check out SynergyKM --it's Synergy with a graphical interface. I found after playing with Synergy for a bit, once I got it to work I just don't mess with it, and it's been good to me ever since. Do you ever employ that strategy?

Anyway, I find that Jing and Synergy work great together and if you have a hint like this too, I hope you'll share. Hah! I just copied URLs from my Windows computer for the links in this blog without even realizing it! I tell ya, this is handy.
