Attention Mac OS 10.4 Users!

| | Comments (6)

We wanted to give our Mac users a heads-up that going forward Jing will still work on Mac OS 10.4, but it won't be getting any more updates. Future updates to Jing (and Jing Pro) will only support 10.5 and higher.

To be clear, we're not just going to leave 10.4 users hung out to dry. When the next update comes out in the next few months, the current version of Jing is going to hang around for 10.4 users--but you won't get any new features going forward.

There's a number of reasons for this decision--here's a few of them:

  • From a user's point of view, we're going to be able to leverage some cool things with Apple's Core Animation and Core Image technology. Basically, Jing's going to take better advantage of the graphics card. (Your actual Jing captures will look the same but Jing itself should perform and look better in the future.)
  • This technology would also facilitate improving the History should we decide to do that someday.
  • A final benefit I'll mention is that by dropping support for 10.4 and being able to tap into some of what 10.5 and higher gives us, developing Jing will go faster.

We hope this will be of minimal impact. We wanted to give you some warning, but let us know your thoughts--and if you know any OS 10.4 users, maybe you can pass this information on? Thanks!

That is a shame, but entirely understandable from your perspective. Thankfully Jing works without fault on 10.4 already - so any upgrades would have been just an added bonus.

All the best,

Mark

I want to have a Mac later.

When I launched Jing on 10.4, it told me it needed a critical update, but when I obliterated the old Jing application, the new one requires 10.5. Ooops. Where can I download the old version for 10.4?

Thanks.

Hi Brian,
You can download that version here:

I don't know how young/old this page is, but I've just tried to use Jing to make a video. It turns up as an swf file on my desktop that I can't open. Is that because I'm still using 10.4? I'll be upgrading soon, but for all the Mac users out there, could you please explain HOW to open it. And even more importantly, how to send it - cos that's the whole point right (I didn't make a video so I could look at myself, but a file I'd like to share with people I know around the world).
Thanks in advance.

Hi, my guess is that your computer doesn't know to open a SWF using a web browser. You'll need Flash too. Here's some help on this: http://blog.jingproject.com/2009/11/my-jing-video-swf-wont-open-vi.html

Instead of attaching a SWF and sending it to someone else, you may wish to host it on Screencast.com and then just send the link. That's probably the more efficient way and your viewer will most likely have a good viewing experience. (For example, in case their computer doesn't know what to do with the SWF.)

Here's how to get your video on Screencast.com and share the link: http://www.techsmith.com/learn/jing/tutorials/share/share-screencast/

Hope that helps, Mike Curtis
