How Did Jing Get Its Name?

| | Comments (17)

The other day, we sat down with the original founders of Jing - that core team of developers and designers - and asked them:

How did Jing get its name?

They proceeded to have a jolly little discussion and it turns out that Jing had many names in its life. Kamikaze, Arcturus and Orange Crush were just some of them.

What do you think of the video?
Do you like the name Jing, or should we have named Jing something else?

I hope you enjoyed this little video as much as I did. I'd also like to point that Mike, Alan and Tony are not the only ones who were working on Jing back then and we'll be featuring some of the other founders in later video posts.

I just attempted to watch the video on the history of the name "Jing". The buffering made it unwatchable. Is this from your free service or is this what we are to expect?

Really doesn't portray the product in a good way.

Sorry .....

I just watched the video and it worked great for us....

Jing's a catchy, non-lawsuit-inducing name. I'm happy with it and will continue to allow you to use it. ;)

Of course if you had called it "ThatAppThatTakesAndUploadsSimpleScreengrabsThingy" I'd still use it.

I love the name Jing! Arcturus? Really?

I just downloaded the free version. I can see myself telling my associates I'll "Jing it" to you. We have an intense back office that Jing makes sense.

Thanks guys...

And leave the name alone.

How do I get rid of jing

Quote floater

Jing is a good name. It means "gold" in Chinese. So it goes well with your golden sun icon.

The pages on your site--any page takes way too long to load.

Even this page keeps saying the characters are wrong because I suspect it is a time issue.

Thanks for what looks to be a great new tool!

Please tell me how to rid my computer of your damned "Jing" pop up. I don't want it and I do not want to have it thrust in my face every time I log on to windows.

@ Lindsay:

Here is how you can keep Jing from starting by default:
1. Hover over the Jing-Sun, and choose the More Option
2. The Jing ball will open and there are 5 buttons at the bottom – choose ‘preferences’ (the one in the middle)
3. This is where you can set your settings. On the right side is the option ‘Launch on Startup”. Simply disable it to keep Jing from starting when you log into windows.

Here is a very short video illustrating the steps:

I hope that helped.

I hope this doesn't sound too sappy, but I love Jing, I love Jing, I love Jing. I'm writing a book about free and low-cost online tools, and I named Jing my all-time favorite. I found this video because I asked one of your team members to tell me where the name came from, and she sent me here.

Keep up the good work.

So was the name the result of group think? Did that team get together and come up with it or was it the wisdom of crowds?

Arcturus would have been cool as well (being with the sun/star theme) but I don't know if it rolls off the tongue as easy as "I'll Jing it to you."

Keep up the great work. And give the person or people who came up with that name a raise.

Jing means 'gold' in Chinese. Aptly named. Now if I could only figure out how My Online Business Strategy got it's name.... LOL

Quote floater

I think Jing is a pretty good name as it is short, easy to spell and for most people they wouldn't know the Chinese meaning.

Some of the most successful businesses and products come up with a name that isn't a real word, but just sounds good.

Now, just imagine if Microsoft took over Jing, you could have a BingJing. :-)
