Dirk Goes Over the Five Minute Limit with Betsy

| | Comments (14)

Betsy, from TechSmith's Visual Lounge sat down with Dirk (Product manager of Jing and Screencast.com) and asked him some questions about his background, various TechSmith roles and ... she brought up Jing's five minute video limit.

I thought you'd like to hear about this interview, and you can post comments to this post or send it to us directly.

Please keep the 5 minute limit, even for those of us with Pro accounts. Without constraint, there is no need for creativity!

Nice interview. Good to meet Dick.

Anything longer than five minutes will likely require post-production work in any case. There are other products that fill that niche.

Jing's strongest asset is that it is "quick and dirty" from a user's point of view and also from a processing and uploading angle. Lose that and you've lost your market.
I thought I was pushing the limit in my last vid . . turns out it was only 2:18. Funny, it felt much longer. :)

Agree that the 5 min. limitation in Jing has not been a problem. I use it for quick (fast) tutorials, sharing of an idea etc. When I want a longer (more polished) screencast, I use Camtasia.

My 2¢.

Thanks for two great products!

I'd like 10 mins, since consumer YouTube accounts accept up to 10 min videos. This would make it easier to create content for YouTube, rather than posting two 5 min videos (or taking time to splice them).

As pro users, please give us the choice! =D

Please increase the time limit to 10 minutes, at least for the Pro version.

I would definitely use Jing much more if this were the case.

Agree with the above. For collab. work a 10 min or even 7-8 min limit would be useful for at least Pro users. I'm still trying to understand how to integrate into my business,. Time limit is an issue.

As Pro users we should be free to choose how long our Jing videos are!

I am not likely to renew my Jing until time limits are removed.
For now I will use Jing for fun but not for business...

Over all Jing is great!

I love Jing. I hit the 5 minute mark every once in awhile, so would love the option to go longer with Pro. What I want even more, though, is a better warning when I hit 4 minutes and 4.5 minutes so I know I am about to run over.

I was looking at Jing Pro until I saw the 5 minute limit. I do computer tutorials for older people at a retirement center. I don't think I have to tell you that they don't pick up things as fast as a 15 year old. I feel like with no limit I could keep their attention better than I could with several 5 minute videos. I'll keep checking back to see if you have taken off the limit.

Mr. Frazier,
Thank you for the video. For a Beginner (4+ years), it helps so much. The questions I would like to ask are as follows;
(Please advise which is the best to use,Free or Pro?)
1] I have a small software that allows me to use text and images as slides. I can hold the slide for xxx time.
2] This software then lets me create a video.
3] I can also use 50 license free background music loops.
4] I then can send to ou Tube.
My problem is. I have no idea about "Codecs".
Do I need Codecs for Jing? If not, FANTASTIC.
Thank You in advance.
Regards Harry Deitch (Sydney, Australia).

Hello Harry,

I think the biggest difference between the free and Pro version that is most relevant to your situation is that Jing Pro allows you to create videos in MP4 format. YouTube does not like the SWF video format provided with the free version of Jing.

Your question about codecs is a good one. When you get Jing Pro there is a special codec that comes with it and included with the fee. Therefore, you should not have to install anything besides Jing, then upgrade it to Pro.

Here's more information about the differences between SWF and MP4 video: http://help.jingproject.com/tips-tricks-and-advanced/video-formats-swf-mpeg-4.html

Hope that helps!

The video above this 1 doesnt work

I think increasing screen capture time to 10 minutes for prousers would be wise. I make screen shot how to videos for crafters and find myself rushing.

I have tried to take the 5 minute chunks and import into Sony Vegas but I lost the mp4 audio. I will surf around and find out what the fix is.

I like jing and really appreciate the screen quality resolution -- how do I move the control box?

Thanks,
Terrie
