Hi, We're Looking for Stories!

| | Comments (6)

We shared Marc's Jing story last week. It's neat to see how people use Jing and often learn about a new application, in this case JiWire.

We were wondering if anyone out there would be willing to share their Jing stories with us--and more importantly--the Web. We have dual motives. We really want to understand how people are using Jing, and how it is and isn't quite meeting their ideal needs. This helps us prioritize and make Jing better. Sometimes we are exposed to ideas we've never even thought of.
Our second goal is to spread creative uses to the masses. People use Jing in ways others never consider. (Like using a webcam to share an image that's not on your computer.)

Do you have a story to share?

We are specifically looking for stories involving:

  • Strategies for recording system audio (the sound from your computer speakers) with Jing.
  • Using embed code for some purpose.
  • Using Jing in educational settings, especially student use of Jing.
  • Using Jing for business purposes.
  • Examples of how Jing increased productivity in the workplace.
  • Funny uses of Jing.

And even if you don't tell us your story, we hope you'll tell a person you know. We thank everyone who spreads the word.

HI there!
Well my story is mainly a question but I downloaded Jing for Mac literally about five minutes ago and thought it was excellent right up to the point that I saw it could only save movies in the SWF format...

Is there anyway you could add support for other formats such as .mov or .avi ?

This would be a great help as I need the videos for a powerpoint presentation and it's not possible with the current format!

Thanks in advance

Hello Cameron,

You're right that our free version of Jing just creates videos in SWF format. It's not the greatest for editing or using in with other programs, but it's web-friendly and royalty free at least. :)

Maybe someone out there can recommend a good way to convert Jing SWFs. Our Camtasia Studio 6.0.1 (Windows, http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp) or higher can do it. Also did you see that Jing Pro can make MPEG-4 videos?

Thanks for downloading and trying Jing, even if the SWF-only format is a show stopper at this time.

Where I work we use Moyea's SWF to Video Converter Pro. Have not used it with Jing per se but for our other SWF generated videos it does a very nice conversion job. We mostly convert to FLV.

You can find more info here: http://www.moyeamedia.com/swf-to-video/

I've used Jing a lot as a reference and instruction librarian at a small college. The most creative way was when I used it to spice up my instruction. I was working with an upper level sociology class who had all had previous research experience. I wanted to give them some time to work on their research but also check in with them to see what they knew how to do. I had each of the students create a Jing tutorial (without sound) of a step in the research process their classmates should know how to do. I demo-ed Jing quick making a short video about how to use EBSCO's citation feature, and then let them at it.

We posted the results on the sociology blog post dedicated to that assignment. http://www.dbq.edu/library/sociology/?p=32 In essence, Jing let me have the students create their own instruction session, and let me assess their skills all in one shot!!

We'd be your #1 Jing users in K-12 schools if only you could modify how Jing launches an updater *.exe upon launching it.

Our network IT staff is concerned with running macros and since current version of Jing uses an exe macro upon launch we are prevented from using it.

I'm a BIG user of Jing and Camtasia studio on my side training/consulting business and see HUGE potential for Jing use by my students and fellow educators--just need an updated version of Jing that makes it optional to update...please help!

Contact me direct please so I can elaborate and help make Jing THE tool for educational institutions like ours!
