FAQ's from Feedback

| | Comments (24)

I thought I would go through the 'ol Feedback Email bag and pull out a few questions that seem to pop up now and again. I've tried to answer these awesome Jingers individually, but I'm guessing if people are taking the time to write us, there's probably a lot more of you out there with similar questions.

System Audio Recording

Jing is optimized for recording narration using a microphone. Jing detects and uses the default audio input device (which is usually the microphone). That said, people are going to want to record system audio (the computer sound or sound that comes out of your speakers.) You may be able to do it, but the key is changing the default audio input device. This may not be supported on all Vista machines. Check out this article for starters, and note at the bottom there is additional help for both Mac and Windows. This article was written for Camtasia Studio, but is equally applicable to Jing. It goes into a lot more troubleshooting and work-arounds, especially for Vista.

Selecting a Capture Size

We don't exactly go out of our way to expose it, but if you click and drag a selection while holding the Shift or Control key you can get a 16:9 (widescreen) or 4:3 (standard) aspect ratio that "snaps" to popular dimensions. Dimensions are important if you want high quality YouTube screencasts or want consistency on your blog or website.

Remember Where I Saved it Last Time!

Sorry, it should work the right way, but it's a Jing Windows bug that is fixed in the next release. However, this is a good opportunity to mention that you can setup a custom Save button to automatically to a particular location--even a network drive. Here's how to do it.

Hi Trainersue,

Try this PDF. It'll at least show what's supposed to happen then we can see if something is out of the ordinary with your installation or setup process.

@Clag: Thanks for the URL mistake. Good now.

Am i losing my mind, whenever i Share anything on Screencast.com i receive no URL on my clipboard and therefore can't find it our get anyone else to find it. Please help :o(

Hi David,
I'm assuming if you go into say a Word document, if you copy text can you paste it? As a temporary workaround, you could manually get the URL from screencast itself. If you sign in to Screencast.com, then open your Jing folder (can take a bit if you've got thousands of Jings in there) sort by date and find your capture. There is a share icon associated with the thumbnail, a lot like in Jing's History.

You could also make a new folder and Screencast.com button in case you have too many Jings to manage in the default Jing folder.

I'm going to suggest contacting our Tech Support at http://support.techsmith.com because they would have more experience if perhaps something is conflicting or it's a hardware issue.

Thanks,

Is Jing free for business use?

Quote floater

Hello Robert,

Sure thing. Put it on as many computers as you want, and we hope Jing helps you be more productive, make money, whatever it is you need to do. :)

able to press pause, and move the recording window around, not zoom or pan, these are camtasia features, but just move the recording window that we created, then press resume or play again..

Does Jing Pro work on Windows 7? I can't seem to make it stay there. I get the message similar to Jing is not working and windows will try to find a fix.

Also, where should I download Jing Pro--I paid for it, but the only link I see is for Jing Free?

Quote floater

Hello Dannie,
Jing should work on Windows 7. If you have any problems, I would suggest contacting http://support.techsmith.com. About the Free vs. Pro, the key is the email address you use in More > Preferences. I would make sure the email you used when you paid for Pro is entered in Jing, and if that doesn't work automatically, quit Jing and restart it. You should be Pro.

Have a question. Basic user but here goes. If I save my JingPro screencast to screencast.com and I decide later that I want a local copy of the file, can this be done? Also, I would like to do the reverse as well. If I save a local copy of the screencast, can I then save it to screencast.com? Any info related to these two questions would be great appreciated. Thanks!
PS Is this the right place to post or should I be postings to another location/newsgroup?

Hello Jugglertwo,

Good news! The answer to both of your questions is yes. The process is the same no matter which situation you're in.

You'll want to double click the piece of content in your History. It will open in Jing's preview window and you can send it to any place you'd like.

Here's where you can learn more about your History: http://help.jingproject.com/manage/jing-history.html

Thanks for the question. I'd think this as good as place as any to ask. :) Hopefully other Jingers out there will help and answer others' questions too!

Question: I recently purchased Jing Pro and did from my home computer. I will be using it for various sreencasting items at work. Now I want to load it for my desktop at work and my work laptop.
Do I have to pay for the 2nd and 3rd downloads as well for $14.95 each?
Please let me know what TechSmith's procedure is for this situation.
thanks!

Quote floater

Hello Jugglertwo,
Good news, you can buy one Jing Pro license and install it on as many computers as you want. The key is that the Pro account is associated with the email you used to purchase and as long as it's you using it, please feel free to install it as you need.

Thanks for the question!

Is there a way to save my work after i take snapshot and edit it, and before it's conveted to .png?
(I add arrows, and texts, and want to save it in some "Jing" fomat for later editing)
Is it possible?

Thank you!

Quote floater

Hello Grei,
Alas, there is no "Jing" file type to allow editing of various markups. Once the arrows are added, they are burned in to the image, and while you can open the image from your History, you can only add additional markups and not make changes to the existing work. It's a neat question and idea though!

Hi Guys. Can't get that ctrl/shift thing to work - is this done before the video is shot? or ...? Thanks

Quote floater

Hello Barney,

Yes, as you click and drag to select the region, that is the time you should hold ctrl or shift.

Here's a video showing it in action at about the 40-second mark.

Hi

I'm using JIng on Windows 7, (after using it successfully on Windows XP) and I'm finding that when I try to animate a screen capture with a text box and arrows that they overlap and make each other disappear...Is there a fix or a specific configuration for addressing this issue please?

Quote floater

I'm using Windows 7 and I've managed to install Jing. However, when I try to take a screencast and save it, I get a notification that Jing needs to close. I can take a picture but not record a video. Are there any compatibility issues between Jing and Windows 7?

Jean-Claude,

Here's one idea: http://techsmith.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/techsmith.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2340

If that's not helpful, I'd recommend opening a ticket with support. Jing should be able to record videos on Windows 7 so I am confident there is a solution.
