A Typical Jing Day
On Jing we try to employ Agile development practices. Every day at exactly 11 am, the Jing team gets together for our Scrum near our Gantt chart which lists all the stuff we're supposed to be doing over the course of the approximate 30 day cycle.
We quickly go around the room and say what we did in the last 24 hours and what we promise to accomplish in the next 24 hours. Sometimes what you say you're going to do doesn't come to fruition and you feel shame.
In this video, Bill, Dennis, & Captain Jing give their reports.
Interesting that the jing team uses the Agile development process. I use it as well at work. I think the process works pretty well, but it does make you feel embarrassed if you don't have anything to say because, like most jobs, you're doing other things besides the main project. I'm the product manager, which is supposed to be an important role, but here's my impression of how things usually go: Me: "I'd like us to do X right away because the customer wants it."
Tech team: "Well, if you want X now, we'll first have to do Y (tech term I don't understand), Z (another tech term I don't understand), etc., etc., first in order to make X possible."
And I thought the product manager was supposed to have the most important say....
Anyway, interesting video (but the gold guy - not really that funny).
I love Jing - keep it up
Would love to hear what you use for gantt charts. Do you know of a good online one?
I took a photo of the chart with my phone. http://screencast.com/t/m0e9GGxMYM It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but we pinned it up in a hallway and it's probably the easiest to update.
I think some folks around here tried looking for a digital solution but we've settled on the physical representation. One thing we like is we quickly get the whole 30-day picture and you can see when people are getting behind and where you might be able to jump over and help out.

We have developed a hybrid development model that allows us to define business requirements to ensure our clients know exactly what they are getting, while in-house we then take those requirements and work within an agile / zdd environment to ensure we do not kill creativity and get the best possible product. We have also found that agile works best with a team who has worked closely for an extended amount of time and one where ability and skill set is directly linked to expectations of that team member. Even in agile process is key.
I've tried it on my sister's pc... Its very essential for a student like me who's busy doing research. Now I dont have to buy term papers online. Jing helped me a lot when it comes to presentation of images.
HUGE fan of Camtasia and Jing here...wishing you can modify Jing so it works on our school campus for staff and students.
I'd assume other K12 campusus might have same issue, so please STRONGLY consider making Jing NOT run an embedded *.exe file to check for updates upon launch. Maybe you can prompt the user "would you like to check now for updates"?
Here is message I received from my IT staff why we cannot run Jing as is:
"The reason Jing is not working for you is that when it launches it automatically tries to download an embedded .exe file to run for updates. Our proxy will not allow embedded .exe to work because this is the number one cause of malware and virus infections on the web. So Jing will not work on our network."
Please consider modifying Jing so it works for folks like us, probably same issue exists for corporate folks too?
Thanks, and contact me if more details needed.
