A Warning: Deleting Content from History

| | Comments (14)

Hi. We've been getting some feedback about surprises (the bad kind) people are encountering when deleting things from their History. I figured the least I could do is make a blog post in the hopes of helping others.

When you delete content from your History, Jing will also attempt to delete the content from its stored location.

For example, if you saved an image to a folder on your computer, then delete it from the Jing History, Jing will attempt to delete it from the folder as well. Content is also deleted from the History and location if you put it on Screencast.com, an FTP server, Flickr, and YouTube. Learn more about the History.

Why do we do that? Well, when Jing started, Screencast.com was still in beta and some features were missing. For example, there were no thumbnails, deleting was a mult-step process, and there was no ability to multi-select content. Therefore, it was much easier to delete your content from right within Jing. We also thought if people had a video on their FTP, and an image on Flickr, they wouldn't have to go to the web, login to two separate accounts, and delete them. Convenient, right?

Maybe not. Now we're not so sure it's a good idea that deleting stuff in History also deletes it from the stored location.

What are we going to do about it?

  1. First off, make a clearer and better warning message in the product.
  2. Get feedback.
  3. Reexamine this behavior, and rethink the History in general.

Here's what we'd love from you. What do you think of the current deleting behavior? Does anyone use it? Have you gotten burned by it?

If you'd rather not comment on the post, send us feedback directly. Thanks!

I'd prefer if you not delete it off of my computer... if I'm deleting it from my history it may be because I've changed/edited it and no longer want the pristine version available.
Plus I don't like the idea of a program deleting something that I haven't specifically asked to be deleted... I wanted the "cloud" version gone, not the one on my hard drive.

I'd rather Jing not delete files from my other storage locations. I don't really use the Jing history. Once I create a video or picture, I place it where I need it (web, ftp, local computer, network etc.). I would rather manage my files myself.

When I delete from history it's because I don't want anyone to stumble across that version. In other words, I've assumed it will be deleted from the cloud. If that means deleting a working copy on my computer, too, that's fine. However, if I have specifically saved a copy elsewhere, I'd expect it to remain.

It would be cool to have both options: to delete from where I posted it to through jing and to "only delete from history."

I agree with Rebeca. Although you want to minimize the number of prompts and questions in the UI, I think that when the delete button in History is clicked, an "Are You Sure" prompt should come up, containing a checkbox (that is off by default) for "Also remove this capture from [FTP/File system/Flickr/Youtube/etc.]"

I like Trevor's idea.
To clearly indicate what it's about to do, raise a dialog box to confirm deletion "are you sure?" and have on the same dialog a list of all destinations that Jing sent the capture to, with each item in the list preceded by a checkbox. By default, the checkboxes would be selected. That way, the user could alter the selection (deselect all) to keep the capture on any or all destination(s).

Just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone who commented, and to those who emailed us directly on this subject. It was quite helpful, and it was interesting to learn how some people are using delete from History. There were some good ideas here, and we really appreciate it.

No way Jose, absolutely no deleting of any kind from or at any place regarding my computer and data. Once they find out about it this stupid feature makes it easy for some malevolent rat to do bad stuff to us and we have enough loss of control from M.S. products and all their lap-dog third party software vendors. There is enough badly written software out there to last everyone to the next millennia. Hands off "stop" "alto" forget it. Until you remove this auto purging, auto deleting crap from your product I won't be using it or recommending it. If deleting is so important write the program making it transparent and let the users make their own choices then make it do their bidding. Make the software do it correctly and conveniently while under absolute control of the user. If you can’t then go do something else more constructive like sell used cars or something. NOTE: not using this program until you fix it and make it run properly and correctly. Screw styles get the info across.

I think that it would be nice to keep the delete feature, but as something you have to select. For instance, maybe a checkbox or prompt that says "Also delete this content from its stored location" giving users the ability to do this when wanted (much like your original intent with saving the user steps in deleting content), but then they have the ability to just remove the item from the history list.

Just give everyone full control. I should be to choose not to delete if off my computer, or delete it, delete from youtube, don't delete, etc., etc.

We just lost a very large amount of help tutorial videos due to this. We incorrectly assumed since we stored them locally and on Screencast, then we were safe to clean up our history section. The history page in Jing is clunky once you store a large amount of videos.

We are extremely disappointed in Jing's performance on this. Hard to determine just how many hours/days of work were just completely lost.

look, why sometimes Jing just don't record the video at all? And says it after you finish record and try to save it but get a mesage The file has been deleted and you can't share it.
I use Jing Pro and it's a big problem actually. Usually when you buy something you have a guarantee it will work.
Can you help or give some wise piece of advice, please?
