Jing Won't Launch on Startup (Windows XP)

| | Comments (14)

The mystery has been solved! Some Windows XP users have Jing setup to launch when the computer starts, but Jing doesn't. They've had to manually launch Jing from the Start menu. While not the end of the world, it's sure annoying.

Well Mark and Fatih did some detective work and fixed it. It had to do with a goofy way XP was inserting a space in some path during the install. One little space...

We're not going to force an update, but if you want to grab the latest Jing, re-download and install it from: http://www.jingproject.com. The only thing different in this Jing from yours is that Jing will now respect our dear Windows XP users and start up upon launch like you told it too.

Happy Jinging!

Ah, I see. Before this fix I just went ahead and added a shortcut to Jing in the "Startup" folder.

Mmmm ... If I have Jing Pro, do I do just the jing.exe download? Or is there a separate download?

Good question Dave! There is just one version of Jing. What will happen is when you download the exe as long as you log in with the account you used to go Pro, Jing will be smart enough to realize you're Pro and make it so.

So, another way to think of it--there is no Jing download and Jing Pro download. There's only Jing and the account (screencast.com email) determines your "Pro-ness".

I've just purchased the Pro version and I'm logged in at screencast.com with the same email that purchased the Pro version. I've downloaded and installed Jing and started it up. No matter what I do, I keep getting the same error for failed login: "Jing Warning - Could not connect to network. A transport method error occurred when calling: "Screencast.Admin.Account.GetCountryList" so I've been unable to launch Jing and get started. I'm running on Windows Vista Home with AVG Internet Security. I've already Marked Jing as SAFE when prompted. Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Lee

An update. I've verified all the details with the associated account on Screencast.com and the email used to purchase Jing Pro. I restarted the computer and restarted Jing and am having a different result than yesterday. Today's error reads: 'Could not connect to network. A transport method error occurred when calling: "Screencast.User.GetInfo"'. End Result, I still can't get Jing loaded and use it. My goal is to have this running asap and tied to my YouTube account.

Hello Lee,

Jing reads the proxy from your web browser. You might try opening a web browser. Can you navigate to new pages? This may sound strange and I'm grasping here, but what happens if you leave your web browser open and then quit Jing and restart it?

I also pulled this answer from the support pages at http://support.techsmith.com

It might have a clue. I hope this helps!

This problem can occur if you have a firewall blocking communication with Jing, if you are behind a proxy, or if you are not connected to the internet.

If you have a software firewall on your computer, please try disabling it for testing, or add Jing.exe as an exception to your firewall.

If you are behind a network firewall, contact your IT department or network administrator to request Jing.exe be allowed to pass through port 8080.

If you are behind a proxy server, please see if you can bypass the proxy or make sure that www.screencast.com is accessible through the proxy.

Guys, was very dissapointed to see (after I bought Pro) that you don't support the most common corporate setup there is - proxy servers. Very rare these days that firewalls allow any direct access, everything goes through a proxy. And like most places I've worked at in the past 10 years, they tend to limit destinations to port 80.

So now Jing Pro is great for when I'm at home (around 5% of my available time) but for the rest of the day I can't use it.

Asking for administrators to change network settings in an environment like this is a waste of breath.

Great product though :)

Hi Folks,
My error my involve proxy settings at my work. Just recently, Jing starts up with message that "There was a problem reading some settings. Jing will now revert to default settings." Then if simply refuses to connect to the network. I can't even get to the Jing sun to check out the settings--it just won't load up.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I was just wondering. Why am i getting the "Screencast.User.GetInfo" error? I am trying to share it after a recording. Any Ideas? I tried leaving a web browser open, and restarting Jing, as previously suggested. It did not work. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
