New Enhancements to Jing & Jing Pro
Now Starring You!
If you've plunked down the pocket change for Jing Pro, get ready to witness a whole new way to communicate visually--by taking advantage of our new webcam integration! Now you can provide a quick "in person" intro to your videos, send "video postcards" to your kids away at school, or even show off your latest big purchase to your friends by recording with your webcam.
Don't worry if you haven't scrounged up the $15 bucks for Jing Pro, all Jing users are getting some cool enhancements today, like:
Easy Region Selection
By holding down the Ctrl or Shift while selecting your area to record, your selector will maintain standard aspect ratios of 4:3 or 16:9 for widescreen. The easy region selection lets you choose any dimension you want while locked to the set aspect ratio. OR if you want, you can snap to a standard present dimension such as 320x240 or 640x480, etc.
Output to Snagit and Camtasia Studio
For more advanced editing and production options, Windows users can now take your Jing screen capture and recordings straight to our more advanced TechSmith tools, "Snagit":http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.asp and "Camtasia Studio":http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp. No worries if you don't own a license. You can try them both free for 30 days.
Want to hear back feedback on your Jings or start a dialogue about your capture? When you share your stuff through Screencast.com, you can now enable commenting on that content from within Jing!
Share to Different Screencast.com Folders
You can now choose to share your stuff to any folder you have set up within Screencast.com. Just create a new button for each different folder (Jing allows up to 8 unique buttons). That way if you want to keep your work and personal Jing stuff separate, then go ahead and share to different folders!
So you're probably thinking, so what is it going to cost me to upgrade? Nothing! The webcam feature is free to all of our Pro users. If you're not Pro and want webcam support, you can always "purchase Pro":http://store.techsmith.com/countryselect.asp?target=/order/jing.asp&sid=877940445&productid=jing&c= for $14.95/year. The rest of the features are included in both Free and Jing Pro updates. With these updates now public, you will be notified to update your version of Jing on your next restart of Jing or within the next 24 hours.
We hope you enjoy the new fun things in Jing. These are directly the result of "your feedback":http://jingproject.com/support-choose.asp so keep the comments coming our way. You can check out Jing and Jing Pro at www.jingproject.com.
Cheers,

Very cool stuff. I couldn't wait to start Jinging directly to Snagit, but the buttons aren't there. Checked for updates and I have the latest (at least according to Jing). Am I just being overly anxious?
Will this output work with Camtasia 5? (Fingers crossed, but ready for disappointment...)
Thanks!
Nice! Looks like I have to re-think using Jing for quick captures especially for things link blog posts.
Thanks!
Lon Naylor
Yup, I was just being anxious. I'm looking forward to this. You guys make stuff that really makes my work easier.
Thanks again!
Hi Tony, Bill & crew- was all excited about insert video capability; then read that it's only on MPEG4; not SWF. Unfortunately (and I have no idea why; maybe you do) the file size and clarity (from the start) of MPEG4 is immensely larger than SWF/Flash.. which makes it unsuitable for quick and simply distribution to clients as a link.
If I'm doing something wrong (tried it on my Windows notebook as well as iMac) would appreciate a hint; so far SWF works far better.
great idea! just wish I could implement it with SWF.
keep up to the good work!

Love it! Any plans to enable the users to record pen writing from our bamboo or wacom tablets? I do this extensively in Camtasia but how I would love to do it for quick captures via Jing. I have this double program way I do it now that works, but is really clumsy.
Open the application I want to "write" on.
Open Camtasia and select the area
Open Jing and select the camtasia area
Start the Camtasia recording
Start the Jing recording
"Write" away!
Not pretty... but it works.
So... how about "Enable Pen" in Jing?
Thanks.

Well, I was disappointed. No joy for those of us with Camtasia 5. For what it's worth, I have had size problems with the MPEG4 output in Jing as well as in the trial version of Camtasia 6 (one of the few reasons I couldn't justify the upgrade). So how about it? A little something for us loyal customers who just couldn't afford to upgrade?
And I enthusiastically second the comment regarding "Enable Pen".
Thanks!
I am very pleased about the aspect ratio feature.
Great Update Guys! These make Jing my "Go To" tool for quick screencasts.
Thanks!
@Gene, I checked out your site, and why SWF is so much smaller for you is because you don't have much motion in those graphs. Therefore the way SWF works, it doesn't have to update. The reason the webcam only works with MP4 is mostly technical. If the webcam tried to record the SWF, all that motion and subtle changing of the pixels would make the SWF explode in size. Sorry about that!
@Barry--thanks for sharing your workflow to get the ScreenDraw. I'll pass on the request.
@KMurdock, we too wish that Camtasia Studio could handle the Jing output. Unfortunately it wasn't till version 6.0.1 that CS added the functionality to handle the MP4 and Jing SWFs. Hopefully we can sway you to upgrade the next time around!
Mike Curtis, TechSmith
Awesome, thanks for the additions. I'm going to love the distinct Screencast folders... that will increase my Screencast usage ten fold!
I know a lot of people here who are using Jing and SnagIt together... I look forward to finding out the benefits of integrating them. :)
Love the new features, especially the webcam.
One question/suggestion, is it possible to have a hot-key to switch between webcam and screen view during recording? It's a bit annoying to have to click on screen to switch.
Thanks and keep up the good work!
iBrent
Ok, look at the posts... from 1:09pm to 1:22pm I set up my Screencast folders and buttons... it's all done... SEAMLESS integration! Great workflow guys!
Is there still the 5 minute limitation to the Pro version?
*crossing my fingers!!*
I appreciate the update, however I am unable to share today? When I use Jing it tells me to get the update > I click OK > Then I get a message saying "Jing has stopped working" and it shuts down. Where can I download this update manually please?
I am a "Pro" subscriber.
Looks promising, as before, but still must have the ability to enter/edit proxy settings within the JING application (NOT by editing our corporate network hardware) or need the ability to use Jing standalone without connecting to Screencast.com which is blocked by our corporate internet-filtering content application. We are a healthcare company and are heavily regulated regarding privacy and security.
I really need a button to PRINT. Is there one ?
I am very excited about the new webcam feature. It is certainly a lot easier than splicing myself in using iMovie. It's too bad about Snagit and Camtasia only being usable in Windows. What about a little love for us Mac users?
So, should I be automatically seeing this webcam integration in Jing Pro for Mac after updating? I'm not seeing it.
Awesome that we can now add ourselves on camera! Any way to get rid of that annoying "Initializing Webcam" that gets dropped on top of the video when you switch?
Hate to rain on the dance, but the recent email about the "new, improved Jing" has some shortcomings. One, the first "more..." link about posting to SnagIt yields a DNS server error. No info.
And when one tries to find out why there are no button creation options for linking a capture to SnagIt, there's the omission of the fact that one needs to be a SnagIt 7 user for that to work. Those of us with no need for SnagIt 7 are (like we are with the poorer customer service since Techsmith outsourced it...) left in the dust.
And when one tries to use the Screencast online help to figure out the folder feature, an Internet Explorer "...cannot read this website..." error occurs if you click on a specific help topic (comments already sent to wherever comments go nowadays).
All in all, TechSmith seems to have done what TechSmith does: forego a thorough user interface testing of both the new product and the email links.
Cheers anyway,
J.Shaw (a one-time and longtime SnagIt/Jing user and champion, but not so much any more...)
... But OK, so now I'm at SnagIt 8.2.3 level on XP/SP3.
And I still can't get Jing to update and recognize SnagIt.
So I uninstall free Jing completely and then download and reinstall it.
And Jing STILL can't find SnagIt.
And most of the online TechSmith info. doesn't even acknowledge the new SnagIt tie-in...
And the picture examples shown on the TechSmith website imply a different button arrangement with a cute little wrench thingie (and SnagIt button), neither of which show up on my newly installed SnagIt.
...come one, TechSmith people. What gives???!!

Hi everyone,
I'd like to take a swing at addressing some of your comments!
@iBrent: There's no hotkey for the webcam, but we did discuss possible ways to provide an alternative to clicking the button. Jing could use more hotkeys in general. I hope we can make this happen.
@Joshua: Thanks! We hope people find multiple folders on Screencast.com useful.
@Ronnie: Sorry, as you probably found out by now, there's still a 5 minute video limit.
@Jeff: Try this for windows: http://download.techsmith.com/jing/windows/jing_setup.exe
Mac: http://download.techsmith.com/jing/mac/jing.dmg
Shouldn't need to do that of course, so maybe try http://support.techsmith.com
@M. Wright: You're right. Jing is lacking when it comes to maybe what one might call enterprise installations as well as many educational sites. We want to make this better. You list a couple of ways that could work? What would be your ideal solution? Email us your suggestion if you'd be so kind: http://jingproject.com/support-choose.asp
@SalemCat: Print...I've wanted that button from time to time too! Thanks for the request!
@Andrew: I use a Mac all the time, and yeah, it's sure challenging for some parts of my job when I really need a Snagit or Camtasia. Check out this post about Camtasia for the Mac: http://visuallounge.techsmith.com/2009/03/we_need_you_to_beta_test_camta.html
@Rich: Yes. Make sure your recording MP4 and not SWF. That setting is in More > Preferences. SWF doesn't work with the webcam. Still no luck? http://support.techsmith.com
@Grant: That "initializing webcam" message is not ideal. We're hoping to fix it. Here's a workaround. Pause. Click the webcam button, wait, then unpause.
@Jack: I can't find the more link that gives the DNS error you describe. Can you provide more detail about where you wanted the Snagit version requirement? Was that in the email, help, website? About Jing not finding Snagit...I'm not sure what to say except I hope you'll try our tech support. They're not outsourced. They're just across the street from me and they all sit in a room with almost no lights on. If you email support.techsmith.com, you'll probably get a guy named Casey--the Jing support lead.
@i love you: Um, not quite sure what to say here...
Thanks all,
Mike Curtis, TechSmith
Love it!!
My MacBook Pro has a built-in camera, which apparently is not compatible with the webcam feature.
Is there any type of fix that you have heard of that will allow the built-in camera to work with the new webcam feature?
If you know of any, i would sure love to know. I love Jing!!
Hello Odie,
Your built in camera on your MacBook Pro is expected to work. I'm going to suggest you contact our support at http://support.techsmith.com.
I launched Jing this morning and it told me I needed to update. I click the "Get the update" button but every time I get a dialog box that "Jing encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It tells me I can't share without getting the update but when I try to get the update it blows its brains out. Help!
I'm trying to figure out how or if I can use audio with the new webcam feature. Or is it only possible to see myself visually, no audio. ?
Can anybody help me?
Hi. Been loving Jing but can't seem to get the new version working on my mac. I downloaded the .dmg and installed it but every time I launch it I get the Techsmith logo and then... nothing. I have tried several times but can't figure out what the problem is. I am on 10.4.11 which the mac specs on the dl page say is still supported.
can anyone help, please? I need my Jing!
Great video!!!!!
When I try to open JING - an erroe appears
"appliction has generated an exception that could not be handled:
PROCESS ID=0xd8 (216)
THREAD ID=0xf80(3968)
Please respond!
Regards,
ITZIK
When will we be able to show our webcam view in a tiny screen over-top the recorded video? Switching back/forth is OK, but there should be an option to keep profile video in the picture on the side.
After months of struggling with the "Jing has encountered an error and needs to close" error on my work laptop while it ran perfectly on my other laptop and on my desktop, months of discussion with techsmith tech support and hours in a remote session with microsoft tech support, I finally solved my problem. Jing was crashing immediately upon attempting to load, even after several uninstalls and reinstalls of .net framework, including uninstall with microsoft's .net uninstall tool, and several uninstalls and reinstalls of Jing. There was no Jing settings.xml file on this laptop so I copied that file from my other laptop on which Jing was working perfectly. That caused Jing to at least load and the Jing sun to situate at the top of the screen, but when I moused over the sun, Jing still crashed. Several of the crashlogs pointed to a fontfamily exception. Despite MS tech support's insistence that it was not necessary to look at the crashlog, I started to look at the font info. Deleting the fontfamily entry in the settings.xml file produced an "application has generated an exception that could not be handled" error. Then I compared the windows\fonts folder on the non-working laptop with the one on the working laptop and noticed that the non-working laptop had font shortcuts whereas the working laptop had no font shortcuts. So I moved all these font shortcuts to a folder I created and bingo, Jing now works perfectly on every machine. I'm passing this along in the hope that it will help someone else, especially someone who may be as frustrated as I was. Thanks to techsmith tech support for attempting to help. Perhaps you can post the fontfamily as a possible culprit on your support site.
