New Year, New Buttons and More

| | Comments (16)

Hi, I wanted to share a little information about some new things all Jing users are getting. You may have heard about Jing Pro by now, but did you know that you can still use the free version of Jing like you always have? I should say, better than you always have!

Watch this 11-second video to see how to manually check for Jing updates. If you don't already have Jing, download it free.

One of the exciting new things in Jing is the customizable buttons. Don't worry, you can still use your buttons the way you do now. Jing won't mess with the buttons you've already established when you upgrade.

Now though, Jing is giving you the option of really being in charge of your buttons. You can name them, delete them, move them around, and even create multiple buttons (up to 8 total). Why in the world would you want 3 Save buttons for example? Well, important videos could go one place, maybe you have a folder related to a client or class, and maybe a 3rd saves the content to a shared network drive or something. Learn more at Jing's new Help Center.

There's one more big thing I wanted to point out. Have you ever been in the situation where you recorded your entire screen and your viewers were annoyed because they had to scroll around all over the place to see what you were doing? For those of you who wanted to resize the height and width in your embed code, that'll work now too.

Oh, and when you update it'll be hard not to notice the sleeker look. Some smaller things you may not notice is that we've gone through and tried to improve the in-product contextual help. Probably the best example is when you go make new buttons. We have more consistent messages when you upload content or get an error too.

As always, please send us your feedback and we'll keep on working!

Very nice, except that one can still not customize the code that you get from sharing on screencast.com. You either get the shorthand link or HTML embed code.

I would like to be able to upload to screencast.com with the one click but get a customized embed code instead of the HTML one Jing produces. This is mainly for message boards that do not support HTML but rather their own markup language.

Please consider adding a possibility to have the option to upload to screencast.com from Jing and still be able to customize the code that is copied to clipboard.

Thanks!

Great work guys! Thanks for the new features.

Great work- I love the new features and look. I do have one question, though. When I select an area to capture and then click capture, I now have to highlight the filename in order to change it. In the previous version, it was automatically selected and all I had to do was type the new name.

Additionally, if I click in the yellow 'title bar' after the capture, I can immediately start typing the new filename. It seems that the application loses 'focus' after the capture.

Was this an oversight or was it intended? Thanks!

Hi Michael,
Arg, that's an oversight Michael that crept into the Windows version of this release. It's not by design and it's on the short list to fix. Thanks for finding that and taking the time to bring that to our attention.

Hey guys, great work.

I love the custom button. I have a website that is a blog that acts like a CMS. This blog uses a custom image field so I can publish an image with the entry on the blog's main page (but the image isn't actually part of the blog post.)

In order for this to work, I have to put an image into a special folder on my webserver. With a custom jing button, I can have one FTP button for images that I normally share in blogs, forums, etc. This FTP button puts the entire fully-qualified URL on the clipboard, so I can paste the whole link to see the image.

Now I have a second FTP button. This one puts the Jing image onto my webserver in the special directory for my blog theme. Then it puts just the filename on the clipboard, so I can paste that into my blog software (it doesn't want the full URL, because it knows where the image is supposed to be stored).

This feature works perfectly, and is awesome. Again, great work. I love the new Jing.

(BTW, I'm a Snagit user too, but I find Jing is perfect for SO MANY things, from capturing quick screen shots for bug reports, to blogging, that I use Jing way more than I use Snagit. Snagit is still great for my more complicated images that use callouts or need other edits, but man I love Jing.)

I'm always happy for new improvements and this time you did it. Hurray.
On the other hand I still miss the ability to create an opaque rectanglewithout any frame or contour (white for instance) to cover and hide part of the screenshot.

LIKE ERASING PART OF THIS TEXT OVER THIS LINE (see URL)

I don't think it's a big issue for the creative Jing team.
Love you,
Alex

That really are the things that I miss so much, too.
And perhaps, you should erase the drop shadow completely, because it isn´t really that beautiful :D

Thanks :)

Hi

Got Jing Pro yesterday. For me, doing mostly screen capture videos of futures charts, The colors in .swf seem much much more vibrant and realistic than in .mp4. Is that normal ?

Also, before yesterdays update you could review the .swf files in IE Explorerer, and they would play at their correcy size...now they open up full screen to whatever your browser size is. Did you make a chenge here ? It is much better to see them at the same scale that will be seen from Screencast. Can this be fixed ?

Thanks much
Do enjoy Jing & Screencast a lot
