New Version of Jing for Mac Users
| Update 2/16/09: This latest version fixed the QuickTime 7.6 issue. However, we have received reports of users on Intel-based Macs running OS 10.4 Tiger experiencing intermittent crashes upon recording. Contact Tech Support and request a patch we're working on that we think will solve your issue. |
In an effort to address the Jing Pro video problems associated with the latest release of QuickTime (v7.6), we have released a new version of Jing (for Mac users only). Jing will prompt you to install this latest version the next time you restart.
With this new version, Mac users can once again record videos in .MP4 format and share those videos as desired. We do however, view this release as a step in completely resolving the problem, as there are still a few lingering issues.
Remaining issues:
- Videos may get out of sync between the video and audio if the user mutes and restores the audio during the recording OR the user pauses and resumes during the recording.
- If the user's CPU becomes highly stressed, the resulting video and audio content may also become out of sync.
We will continue to investigate the remaining issues. That being said, we wanted to restore the ability to record .MP4 videos as quickly as possible with this release.
NOTE: Windows users of Jing will be not affected by this update.

I just took the second critical update on Mac Jing, and it keeps crashing (quitting). Seems to relate to my clicking on my browser screen -- does not happen every time I click and move the browser view, only sometimes and randomly, as far as i can tell.
Wow! It keeps crashing, its retarted.
keeps crashing for me too.
same here, this has never happened before, when i record it starts but when i press pause the program shuts itself down. not good. makes me hesitant to buy jing pro.
Hi Guys.
The new version works fine for me. Thansk for the quick work around.
Jing invited me yesterday to download a new version. Did that immediately, but after clicking the Install script I see the yellow circle for a while - and then Jing seems to be vanished.
Downloaded today again, installed by means of the Install script and manually, but nothing seems to happen after the yellow circle shows up some seconds.
What's wrong? Am I making a mistake?
I am also suffering constant crashes with the new version. First software I've used on Mac where the OS doesn't seem to know the crash occurred (i.e. no "Send message to apple ..." screen).
Mostly crashes when trying to delete items from history.
Uploads and captures seem OK for the most part.
There is a certain perversity to the fact that the only version of Jing I have ever used that crashes is the one I am paying for!
Capturing as MP4 crashes, and capturing as SWF crashes about half the time.
OS X 10.4.11
(also, when I FTP an SWF up to my site, I see the Jing logo at the startup screen -- even though I don't see it in my History. Isn't Pro supposed to remove all branding?)

I upgraded my Mac Jing Pro today.
It seems to be working fine.

my old version has never crashed. since i had to update because jing wanted to update until it'll save i have crashes every time i use it! it is useless that way!
you wanna take people to subscribe pro, right? damn!
The new (and the previous) version work great on my mac (MacBook w/ Intel).
However, I have some captured videos I did with the free version of Jing that I'd like to convert to mov or something useful now that I have the pro version.
How can that be done?
Ben, this is a tough one as converting that SWF is a pain. One thing you could try is see if you could get a Windows machine with Camtasia Studio 6.0.1 and it'll take that SWF and convert it.
Another thing that will work is to get your system audio which should work great on your Mac (http://blog.jingproject.com/2008/05/recording_system_audio_with_ji_1.html) and then play your Jing video and record it with Jing Pro as it's playing.
I'd be curious to see what kind of drop in quality you might encounter, but it might not be bad at all.
Good luck!

Hi! To everyone reporting crashes or other technical problems, I hope you will send a note to http://support.techsmith.com. They are getting some emails and calls about Jing but nothing about crashing.
Our Tech Support folks are by far the best equipped to handle and track these things--and they really do get back to you and are good at solving issues.
Thanks everyone!

I can't use jing anymore! got all the updates but now whenever I try to save I get this message:
Update Required
An update to Jing is available. Jing needs this update in order to share. Your capture is your capture history.
:(
Other feedback: I also don't like how you got rid of the words for the save icons. Your icons don't make enough sense to me without the words. So I have to hover over them to see what they do. Kind of a pain.
I have the free version of Jing and it's now crashing whenever I begin an attempt to record video.
Last month, I received the prompt to download and install the "improved" version. I did. It worked until today.
I've shut-down and restarted my Mac Book Pro (v. 10.4.11). But subsequent attempts to record video still result in the Jing application closing. And there is no familiar message about a program unexpectedly closing.
I've just written to Jing's tech support. Although, I failed to mention this is the free version. Looks like I should have done so.
I'm tempted to remove Jing and download the program, once again.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Best,
Mark
Every time I try to record a video in Jing (MAC, pro version) it simply closes. No messages or anything. I tried changing to swf recording and still the same problem. Then I messed around with the settings a little and I found out that this error only occurs when I am trying to record video at 640x480 and larger.
Jing Pro is crashing for me as well. No warning, no error message. When I attempt to restart it, I get a message that says it is already running - which it is not.
Frustrating.
It has quit on me twice while I have been here at this site reporting the problem - so it quits even when it is not being used.
Mac OS X 10.5.6
Jing Pro 2.0.13462
Firefox 3.0.6
Am having the same problems as Mark reported on Feb 2.
Jing (free version after upgrade) quits intermittently while capturing a video; always quits when pausing then resuming a capture.
Since I am using the free version, it is recording all captures as .swf, not QuickTime.
Mac OSX 10.4.11
QuickTime Player 7.6
Jing 2.0.13462 (free)
I am having the same crashing issue - running the free version on a Windows Vista Ultimate laptop. Ran fine till 2 days ago. I've uninstalled and reinstalled two times now. Help.
I love this tool!
just lost 20 min of screen capture during prototype session after the upgrade.
frustrating... possibly not getting this tool after reading all the comments above.
how do i install jing? i already downloaded it, and it is technically in my finder, but how do i install it? when i double click it in my finder, nothing happens.HELP!!!
HOW DO I INSTALL JING AFTER IT IS IN FINDER? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE REPLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(I HAVE A MAC OS X)
This is really absurd. I've paid for the pro version and had to record and re-record the same videos now half a dozen times due to random crashes. This is a HUGE disappointment. If you're thinking about upgrading on a Mac, you might want to hold off. Jing has a ton of potential, but it is really a dog on a Mac right now.
Hi!
Jing (free version) still crashes on mac os (10.5). I use Quick Time Pro - if that's an issue. It's september 2009, and this has'nt been fixed...
This is terrible. Why can't I use Jing? The crashes need to be fixed. Unacceptable.
Jing frequently keeps disappearing (all the time now) and saying that it's already running when I locate it in my finder (mac 10.4.11) In the past, I have been able to "work around this" by using my hotkey for captures on the fly, but this too is no longer working. I use it extensively in teaching, I guess I'll just need to use old fashioned screenshots and photoshop for text. It's been a great tool, wish it would work again, love having the archive of images. Solutions appreciated! Thank you!
I can't use jing anymore! got all the updates but now whenever I try to save I get this message:
Update Required
An update to Jing is available. Jing needs this update in order to share. Your capture is in your capture history.
I am running Jing Pro on an iMac, MacOS 10.5.XXX
It worked for a few days and now it still doing the upgrade message.
HELP. I even upgraded to Pro. : {
Beverly,
It sounds like you are caught in an update loop?
Try this solution: http://tinyurl.com/y9xpgqo
If that doesn't work, might you drop a note to http://support.techsmith.com?

I upgraded to Jing Pro on my Mac, and now it doesn't record my audio. It says Adobe Flash Player has stopped a potentially unsafe operation. Then says to let it communicate with the Internet, click Settings, which I set. I tried restarting the software and even rebooted, but it just won't work right.
How do you completely uninstall Jing and all its components from Mac OSX?
I am running OSX 10.6.4
And the version of jing that I am looking to install is 2.4.30037
Please help. I can't find any documentation about this anywhere.
Many thanks,
MG
Did you get an answer on how to uninstall on Mac?? Can't seem to find it.
