Behind the Jing Player--and About Resizing
Brooks Andrus, our resident flash guru on the Jing team, is the person behind the new Jing flash player. He made a video that provides a bit of behind-the-scenes rationale and some information about resizing videos. He's a humble guy but I was able to coerce him into putting a nice video together for our staff to understand our player enhancements.
In my opinion, this has universal appeal for all Jing users - enjoy!
There's also information in the Help Center for modifying the embed code in order to change the video dimensions.
Embed specifics for the following is located at the end of each topic:
P.S. A special thanks to Mike Curtis, Jing's writer extraordinaire, for his contributions on this post.

That is a nice video, but it doesn't address a major, major problem I have with the new Jing .swf files: When people load the swf files directly, they resize to the full browser window, regardless of the size of the original capture.
In most cases, I'm not embedding Jing content into a webpage. I'm attaching it to a bug report, or I'm sending it in an IM to a developer. These users are entering the URL directly into their browser, and they are seeing a masssive, distorted video of what I created, because their browser is resizing the jing video to take up the whole browser window.
The old Jing didn't do that. I've submitted a support request, and they act like I'm doing something wrong. ("Why aren't you using the embed code Jing provides?" they ask... Well, because I'm not embedding the video, of course!)
Can't we please have the old jing back that didn't resize the video when you load the swf directly? I can't use Jing if I have to create a web page and embed the file on a page just to show a developer the problem that exists in our product. I mean, it ruins the whole point of using Jing in the first place.
I am happy this issue is being addressed. I am eager to learn how to change the video dimensions. However, I am still confused about it. Is this video using Jing Pro to make the modifications? The UI doesn't look familiar to me.
In the blog post, it reads: "There's also information in the Help Center for modifying the embed code in order to change the video dimensions."
Where exactly is this info? I looked at the ftp and screencast posts but don't see specific info about changing dimensions.
Thanks!
I would really like the 5 minute limit to be removed. I am the Programme Coordinator of a large Initial Teacher Education programme at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I have been looking for software like Jing for over a year, have tried rival products, but none come close to Jing in terms of ease of use, quality and features. The main use I would like to make of Jing is to record lectures together with everything that is on the screen (Presentations, demonstrations, audio, video, etc). This would be very useful for students who could then download the video/screen capture and view this as often as is necessary, especially important for students with any learning difficulties or sensory impairment, where following a one-off lecture is difficult. Most of our lectures are an hour in length, some 90 minutes, so the facility to be able to capture all supporting media would be a real benefit! Although this would create bigger file sizes, I would not clog up the Screencast servers with this, as I would save the captures to my hard disk to make available to students on CD/DVD/USB stick or as videocasts from our university servers. Jing is a fanatstic product and this feature would make it perfect! I urge you to consider implementing this.
Best wishes!
Mike
Can you post a link to the old version of Jing? I can't use the new version since it resizes the image to the browser width.
My boss uses a 30" screen. When I capture a 300 pixel video, you can't begin to guess what it looks like on a 30" screen.
Time to revert to the old Jing!
Please add support of e-mail sub-addressing to your program. I can`t register with +jing in my e-mail. Here link on Wikipedia about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_address#Sub-addressing
Yes I agree with the above comments and I would add it has taken me ages to even find these comments and realize other people have similar issues.
i also find the help sites and Jing help system are very disorganized.
What are they up to? Is this a product they don't want to support? It certainly seems like it.
The apparent easy of use is deceptive and people who pay for the pro version need pro support even if the price is low.
Get it together Jing.
It would be easy enough to write a few embed for us?
One that detects the correct player is present in the browser to play the video clip
....maybe another one to embed the video clip at the right size in a simple web page that would avoid the rezizing issue?/
I don't know. I'm not the developer. Come on....

even the comment system does not have a conformation screen.
Great stuff. Love the new features.
One big question: What is that utility you were using in the video to show the pixel dimensions (over John Nacks blog). I have a Mac and I need something like that.
Do tell.

It's one thing to make changes to the product...but going almost a week without addressing these issues is commercial suicide. I was about to purchase the upgrade but VISA is now safely tucked away in my wallet.
I am also very disappointed about the browser full size issue - I have been promoting jing left right and center for ages but now I am not so sure...so let's have a response guys...you can win us back!!
@iBrent - It's an AIR app called Pixel Perfect developed by Christian Cantrell of Adobe.

@Dan
Sorry about that.
We really didn't realize people where using it that way, so we accidentally removed a 'feature'.
We're working now on how we can best accommodate local viewing and embedding while keeping Jing simple.
Thanks for letting us know you share the raw swfs as well.
Thanks for getting in touch. I understand more fully now and appreciate you guys will do your best to make it work....think I'll be reaching for that Credit Card after all!
This tool is perfect and I am spreading the word everywhere. I would easily pay more than your subscribtion price if this thing had three things more that I do not believe would be hard to add. 1) ability to upload to a specific FTP and get the link to it like we do for your upload location 2) add the ability to add comments on any place on the screen like with Camtasio Studio so as to make this the most powerful quick and dirty screen capture ever. 3) Enbed the logo or watermark like with Camtasia. That and stop it from crashing constantly but that does not bother me much, just need those two additional features to make this the perfect little screen capture program. Camtasia is amazing when I did the 30 day trial but it is way too powerful and no where near as useful as this little tool which without having these features i requested is still a gem! I would gladly pay more per year to have its simplicity with those three additional feature, one of which is already there in the pro version!
So I want to be clear about something.... there's no way I can record a screencast of my entire screen (1920x1200), upload it to screencast.com and then share it with a link via email at another size? It only shows the upper left corner of my huge screen this way, even on my OWN 24" screen. Say what?
What if I want to do a screen cast that shows my entire 24" desktop, but then share it via email with someone who has a 13" screen? There's no way to change the dimensions of the video in my screencast account?
Until this happens I won't be using jing at all, sorry.
Hello Micah,
It's true that SWF videos--the type we create using the free version of Jing are not scaled in any way on Screencast.com. I'm not sure if this will help in your situation, but you can return embed code which you can modify to present a viewing size of your choosing, with the option for the viewer to view in a full screen mode if they so choose.
Details are here: http://blog.jingproject.com/2009/11/embed-code-smaller-videos.html
Two other possible solutions include using the MPEG-4 video format found in Jing Pro which we can scale on the fly in Screencast.com. Finally, some people lower their screen resolution when they record full screen and this can also provide a better viewing experience.
Thanks for your feedback, and I'll take it to the Screencast.com team too.
