Synergy and Jing: A Great Combo

| | Comments (5)

I wanted to share a free (GNU General Public License) program called Synergy. I use Synergy many times every day--usually in conjunction with Jing. I use two computers at work--a Mac and a PC. (Synergy will work between two Windows computers or two Mac too.) I often want to make a Jing of something on Windows, but I'm in a conversation or document on my Mac.

Synergy allows you to copy text from one computer to another. I don't know how much time Synergy has saved me, but was enough to inspire me to donate. Here's one example of how I just used Synergy. You see that graphic above? Well, I made that using Snagit on my Windows machine. (Synergy also allows me to use my Mac mouse and keyboard.) Now, I suppose I could transfer that image file to my Mac via email, network drive, usb drive...but really all I care about is the embed code for that image.

Here's the exciting part:

Using my Mac mouse and keyboard I fire up my Jing hotkey and capture the image, then use my Screencast.com embed code button. My cursor wanders back over to this blog entry, and PASTE. Done!

I can't really say to you that installing and setting up Synergy is a snap, but they do have some good documentation. If you're on Mac be sure to also check out SynergyKM --it's Synergy with a graphical interface. I found after playing with Synergy for a bit, once I got it to work I just don't mess with it, and it's been good to me ever since. Do you ever employ that strategy?

Anyway, I find that Jing and Synergy work great together and if you have a hint like this too, I hope you'll share. Hah! I just copied URLs from my Windows computer for the links in this blog without even realizing it! I tell ya, this is handy.

I use Input Director instead of Synergy. The developement of Synergy has stopped and has some issues if you use it in combination with Vista's UAC.
Input Director is also more stable and has the same features.

I went to the link and there are several (3) links but no instructions on how to install. Woudl nto know which of the links would be the right one for me.

I really would prefer to use a simple executable file.

I work constantly between my Mac and Windows PC.

From somewhere on your site, I understand that I can't change the resolution of my video after I record, and why that's actually a good thing. Fine.

But when I play the video in my browser (Firefox), if the video is too tall, there are no elevator bars, so I'm stuck with the middle part of the video taking up the whole browser window and no way to move up or down. Is there anything I can do? I've minimized the capture area as much as possible, and it's still too tall. Most of the action takes place in the middle of the video, but I don't like the feeling of not being able to scroll up or down and take a peek...

@ Walkiria: Here's a video showing the link I think you want for your Windows machine: http://screencast.com/t/UuKBuwzmV

And you probably want that SynergyKM for your Mac: http://screencast.com/t/67oKI8pN9v6

@ Mike: That's troubling. There should be scroll bars. I just made a Jing video that's really big. If this example doesn't fit on your screen do scroll bars appear? http://screencast.com/t/O3uqh8Yylu You might want to send a sample Jing to http://support.techsmith.com and I bet they can help get to the bottom of this.

You may also want to have a look at http://www.maxivista.com which is much easier to configure than Synergy and also allows to share the monitors(!) between multiple PCs.

This means you can borrow the laptop's monitor as a dual screen for your desktop pc.

Video demo:

Of course, it also does clipboard sharing and remote controlling up to four Pcs with one mouse and keyboard.

Michael.
