What is Screencast.com?

Posted on Tuesday July 22, 2008 by Mike Curtis

Screencast.com is TechSmith’s media hosting solution that Jing uses to securely host your content. It’s perfect for the kind of images and videos you’ll want to make with Jing. We use Screencast.com to ensure everyone has access to a free, secure hosting option that enables the fastest visual communication possible. You can upload or save your content in lots of other places too!

  • Does Jing only work with Screencast.com? No. You can upload content to your own FTP server, save images and video to your computer, and more.
  • Is Screencast.com free for Jing users? Yes. We give you 2 GB of storage, and 2 GB of bandwidth per month.
  • Is it private? Yes. Your content on Screencast.com is your business. (You can make it public if you want to.)

To really learn about Screencast.com and how you can manage your content, make cool MediaRolls, Playlists and much more please visit Screencast.com .

You say that Jing does not only work with Screencast.com. How do I get past the Jing Setup without setting up a Screencast.com account?

Why will it not let me sign up for a new account? It keeps giving me an error message saying "could not create user account, please try again" and then my email address is highlighted.

Hi rmowles,
My first guess is that Screencast.com does not think you have a valid email address. Does your email address contain an '@' symbol, a period, and end in something such as .com, .gov, .edu, etc.?

If your email is valid, I would next contact http://support.techsmith.com and they will determine if this is a Screencast.com issue or a Jing problem.

Thanks for trying Jing--I hope this will be figured out quickly so you can start sharing.

There is some discussion on the pbwiki summer camp (where we are being encouraged to make movies with Jing) that screencast is only giving us a 60 day trial period. Is this true?

Hi Shayne,
Your Screencast.com account will not expire. Jing includes an account from Screencast.com with 2 GB of storage and 2 GB of bandwidth transfer per month. It's not a trial. I hope this answer is a relief and I hope you have fun at the pbwiki camp. I think Jing and wikis go really well together. :)

I figured out how to create a video, but when Jing is "running" and recording the computer slows down to a crawl and I wouldn't want to use these shots in a video. Is there anything I can do to make a recording that is more up-to-speed?
Thanks!

I found today that Jing has a 5 minute limit on video recording, what's up with that?
