We're on a MediaRoll!

Posted on Tuesday July 8, 2008 by Mike Curtis

See that thing over there on the right? It's called a MediaRoll, and it contains Anton's instructional Jing videos, all in one place! MediaRolls can contain images too--and you don't have to have a fancy blog to take advantage of providing viewers with selected content in one convenient place.

How did I make it? I'll show you. (2:48) You can do it with Jing and your Screencast.com account!

Please take note that if you're offering your MediaRoll to the public at large and lots of people are downloading videos, you could max out your allotted (1 GB per month) Screencast.com bandwidth. Learn more at the Screencast.com Help Center, or watch a video about bandwidth issues .

What is Screencast.com?

Posted on Tuesday July 22, 2008 by Mike Curtis

Screencast.com is TechSmith’s media hosting solution that Jing uses to securely host your content. It’s perfect for the kind of images and videos you’ll want to make with Jing. We use Screencast.com to ensure everyone has access to a free, secure hosting option that enables the fastest visual communication possible. You can upload or save your content in lots of other places too!

  • Does Jing only work with Screencast.com? No. You can upload content to your own FTP server, save images and video to your computer, and more.
  • Is Screencast.com free for Jing users? Yes. We give you 2 GB of storage, and 2 GB of bandwidth per month.
  • Is it private? Yes. Your content on Screencast.com is your business. (You can make it public if you want to.)

Get Started with Jing!

Posted on Tuesday July 22, 2008 by Mike Curtis

So you installed Jing onto your Mac or PC...and now what?

First, do you see the sun? It kind of looks like the image above or to the right--the faint one without the mouse cursor. It's discreetly tucked away somewhere on the edge of your screen, always ready when you need to make a capture.

Taking your first capture:

  1. Mouse-over the sun and three little rays appear.
    • The one with the cross-hairs is the Capture ball. This is how you start your capture.
    • The one in the middle is the History. Copies of your captures are located here.
    • The one with the two gears is the More ball. There are all kinds of settings you can change in there. For example, you can setup hotkeys, or make it so the sun interface doesn't appear on your screen.
  2. Click the Capture ball.
  3. Select an area to capture.
    • You can select a window, part of a window, or, you can click and drag the cross-hairs to select a custom area.
    • Decide if you want to capture an image or video. You can add arrows, text and highlights to images.
    • If you have a microphone, you can narrate your video! Videos are limited to 5 minutes in length.
  4. Choose what you want to do with the image or video.
    • Name the file if you want to. Something like, My First Jing might work. Then,
    • Share to Screencast.com and get a convenient URL you can paste into chats, emails, and instant messaging clients. Or,
    • Save the file to your computer. Or,
    • Copy it to your clipboard (You can paste images only into emails and documents.) and more!

That's the basic idea! You quickly capture an image or make a little video. Then, you either share it or save it! To learn more, check out our help topics. For all technical support issues, please contact TechSmith's free Technical Support.

The Jing Project - It's Official

Posted on Tuesday July 22, 2008 by Tony Dunckel

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JING, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JING...

That's right, our little Jing Project is turning one. And we are pleased to announce that Jing is officially becoming a TechSmith product offering!

Now, don't worry, it's still free. Plus, as a token of our gratitude to all of you who have used Jing, provided feedback, and been all around good folks, we are upgrading your complimentary Screencast.com account. How does 2 GB of storage plus 2 GB of transfer sound? That's 10 times the space and double the bandwidth. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say...Happy Birthday to Jing Users!

Of course, in an effort to address your requests for additional features and alternative Jing models, we will likely have premium versions available soon. Stay tuned!
