Jing for Mac: Common Questions Revealed
Posted on Wednesday June 18, 2008 by Anton Bollen
Hey there,
If you're using Jing on a Mac, you might have asked yourself:
- How do I start using Jing?
- Why can't I run Jing from the dock?
- Do I have to use the sun? Can I move it?
- How do I turn this thing off?
Fortunately, Casey in TechSupport put together a 2 minute video to answer some of the most common questions people have about Jing for the Mac..
Enjoy!
If you have specific questions about Jing, you can also Contact Support directly.
Edit:I was asked how I edited and resized the video. This was done with Camtasia Studio, one of the other screen recording tools that TechSmith makes.

Would like it to handle screen caps with scrolling - works for video but not caps? Got any plans for that?

Paul - No plans for that, sorry. But if you haven't already, check out SnagIt; it can handle all sorts of captures including several ways to do scrolling captures.
Jason - Yeah, we know and we're working on it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I just created my 1st video using Jing yesterday (very cool). I recorded almost my entire computer screen, so the file is really big. How do I scale it down to fit in a Wordpress blog post? I see it says under your video that you used Camtasia to edit and resize, but I use a Mac and I thought Camtasia wasn't available for this OS.

When will Windows users (if ever) be able to put Jing in the Windows equivalent of the menu bar (the task bar)?
It looks much more elegant in the taskbar on the Mac than the default Sun.

Tom,
windows users already have Jing available in the Task bar, and like the OS X version, in Windows, unchecking "show launcher" will leave Jing to only reside in the task tray.

Hey Jing People.
First, thank-you thank-you thank-you. I use Jing multiple times each day.
With the release of the new version, I've been slowed down somewhat in my use of Jing.
After I hit the capture key, and I define my capture, I would like to use the keyboard to select 'image' and/or, at the very least use the keyboard to select 'save'.
Is there any way to do this that is built into the Mac Jing?
Or is it best to make some kind of workflow or script?
Thanks
Fraser McNairn

Why save the file as SWF. Can I change to Quick Time Movie?

Hello,
The first video I have captured is a .swf file...but I can't read it with Real, nor Windows Media Player, nor VLC, nor I-Movie...
Can I change it to a.mov or .mp4 file ?

Great app, if it could auto scroll a page to generate a screen grab as well as have some basic video editing tools (like cropping a timeline) it would get far more use from me. Keep up the good work TechSmith!

Nice program but I want the option of when recording video, to select the sound source either from Microphone, Safari, Firefox, or System Audio. I don't see a way to do this at present, or am I missing something?

DB - Recording various audio sources with Jing is somewhat tricky, but it is possible.
Check out this blog post on recording system audio on the mac for more info.
