Jing for Mac: Common Questions Revealed
Hey there,
If you're using Jing on a Mac, you might have asked yourself:
- How do I start using Jing?
- Why can't I run Jing from the dock?
- Do I have to use the sun? Can I move it?
- How do I turn this thing off?
Fortunately, Casey in TechSupport put together a 2 minute video to answer some of the most common questions people have about Jing for the Mac..
Enjoy!
If you have specific questions about Jing, you can also Contact Support directly.
Edit:I was asked how I edited and resized the video. This was done with Camtasia Studio, one of the other screen recording tools that TechSmith makes.

Would like it to handle screen caps with scrolling - works for video but not caps? Got any plans for that?
Paul - No plans for that, sorry. But if you haven't already, check out SnagIt; it can handle all sorts of captures including several ways to do scrolling captures.
Jason - Yeah, we know and we're working on it. Sorry for the inconvenience.
When will Windows users (if ever) be able to put Jing in the Windows equivalent of the menu bar (the task bar)?
It looks much more elegant in the taskbar on the Mac than the default Sun.
Tom,
windows users already have Jing available in the Task bar, and like the OS X version, in Windows, unchecking "show launcher" will leave Jing to only reside in the task tray.
How does it go so fast???
I can't get the annotation toolbar to show. What am I doing wrong?
Why save the file as SWF. Can I change to Quick Time Movie?
Hello,
The first video I have captured is a .swf file...but I can't read it with Real, nor Windows Media Player, nor VLC, nor I-Movie...
Can I change it to a.mov or .mp4 file ?
@ Mark - That's strange. Have you looked at this article?
If you still have problems, try contacting our TechSupport.
Hope that helps. thanks for using Jing.

Nice program but I want the option of when recording video, to select the sound source either from Microphone, Safari, Firefox, or System Audio. I don't see a way to do this at present, or am I missing something?
DB - Recording various audio sources with Jing is somewhat tricky, but it is possible.
Check out this blog post on recording system audio on the mac for more info.
Bonjour,
J'ai installé Jing et quand je visionne ce que j'ai enregistré, je n'ai pas d'image et le son est saturé. Merci de m'aider.
amicalement
just started using Jing today and I'm totally digging it - but for some reason the output audio quit after about 5 vids - on mac 10.4.11 - problem is not system volume, iTunes is fine. Any ideas?
How do I get videos to open in the Jing Editor? My videos open in the Jing Preview. I can't work out how to open the editor.
How do I uninstall Jing. I can't send it to trash because it's always running. I'm using it on a OS X leopard on a new iMac
hajjamal@dmcconsultancy.co.uk
To quit Jing so you can move it to the trash, first mouse over the sun launcher. Then, click More (it looks like two gears). Next click Quit. (It looks like a stop sign with a hand on it.)

I am using Jing as video tour guides for "how to" videos. They are in swf. but I need them for .mov or mp4. I use quicktime, and that does not want to open it either. Real player also will not open it.
how do i scroll in and out with the mac mouse
I installed Jing and I am not seeing the little sun in the corner of my window. When I click on the Jing icon I keep getting the message that the application is on and I can see the sun. But I do not see the sun. What can I do?
I have the same problem with not seeing the sun and then it says the program is running. I click on the app and it appears again but itdisappears everytime I try and record a video. I was not having any trouble and now I can't seem to record anymore. I have no idea how to fix it and I have spent lots of time re-doing videos. I can capture but then when I am through and hit stop the video disappears and is not in the history with the ones I made when I first started using jing about 3 months ago. HELP!
I think you need to address the saving of videos as a quicktime file rather than an SWF. It seems a lot of people are having difficulties with SWF's and don't know how to open them; me being one of those people.
Thanks.
how can you make the recording time longer?
.mov is far preferable for pro editing to .swf. is there an export to .mov feature? also, can i download captured video to my local? lastly, i would prefer to keep the only copies on my local and delete any remote hosting--is this possible? many thanks!
Cannot see the sun on my desktop. I just installed JING on a Mac running OS 10.4.11. Any ideas??
I just installed Jing on my Mac OS X, and it is working fine for capturing videos. However, when I try to upload a video onto screencast, I get a prompt saying Jing needs a critical update. I click OK, and a disk image is automatically downloaded. I open it, and all it seems to do is try to reinstall Jing. Even after doing this, it demands the same update. Is there some sort of error with the update, or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
-Andy
Hi,
Great program. Recently though, I've been running into a few problems: I can't find the sun icon/menu -I've checked the entire screen, and I have no way of closing Jing to reopen it. When I try to open it, it tells me it's already running. Do I have any options other than just restarting my computer?
Thanks!
how can you put it on youtube with out ing being pro
So far I love this product but I do have one issue that's driving me crazy! When I try to run a video, 9 times out of 10 the whole thing just shuts off and the application disappears from my desktop. When I restart it it just does it all over again. It's like I have to get lucky to run a video. What's up with that?
Hi, i got jing yesterday and after using it for a while i decided it would be easier if i got the app to launch on startup.
When i turned on my mac today the icon didn't appear and it told me that the program was already running! rather annoying.
As a few other people have this problem this is how i solved it.
open the application folder and right click the jing icon.
click on "show package contents"
click on the contents folder
then mac OS folder
then on the icon labeled jing.
When i did this the sun icon appeared, which allowed me to change my preferences. i then quit jing and restarted my mac
in now works again.
hope this helps
I have the same problem as others report - the Jing sun does not show, the circling arrows are for Mac .sync, not for Jing, and I can't find a way to force it to quit. I tried the instructions that Dano left about right-clicking on the Jing app., etc., but all that eventually led to was Terminal, and while Terminal said that if I closed it, it would terminate Jing, it did not.
Techsmith, you have to get on this. Too many people are reporting this as a problem. It's not us, it's you.
I'm trying to launch Jing on my Mac but it says that it's already running....however there is no "sun" anywhere on the screen.
Any thoughts?
Like most of these recent posts, I can't see the sun, no matter what I do. Advice?
If the sun is hidden (on a mac osx), how do you bring it back? Is there a hot key I could use?
Ditto with the hidden sun. Its an issue. The ability to quit and restart the program without rebooting would be nice.
I have purchased this application, and tried to update and now it does not work, {-:(
Larry, this is terrible news. Please contact Tech Support http://support.techsmith.com so they can efficiently get you back in business.

jing is not ready for use... it would be wonderful IF... it saved movies to a common format, mpeg4 etc... it is very buggy in my macbook pro,, never know what its doing after a capture it dithers for a long time...so, get it simple make it imovie compatible and i,ll give you £20 for it... until then i,m uninstalling it,, but... a heartfelt sincere thanks for trying Alan McC.
everytime I try to share my captured image Jing asked for update
but I don't know how? after i click OK then what?
Azmi
It's a swell idea, but I could not get the application to record the audio. I tried a few times and then threw the app out. I would have paid money for this, but decided against it. Why? Not because it didn't work. No. Just because even after I watched the video tutorial it didn't work. So I asked myself why it didn't work. Could be some settings. Could be the free version won't allow audio capture. Could be that not all video sources are captured by this software. If there is a video format out there that refuses to be captured, then the application is essentially devalued. If anything else besides a user error then it's worthless. If it's a user error then the application should be more intuitive.
I say all this to help because you've got a lot going for you. Write me back and talk it through and I'll buy the application from you.

My workaround for when I "lose the sun" on OS X, and can't re-launch Jing because it is already running (as mentioned in earlier posts):
1) Open OS X "Activity Monitor" app, find the Process Name "Jing" and stop it
2) Wait a few seconds, make sure it is gone from Activity Monitor
3) Launch Jing again
This time, it launches normally, and the "sun" correctly positions itself in the corner of my primary screen *.
HTH,
Scott
* The Jing "sun" disappears for me pretty regularly. Not sure why, but I suspect it has to do with the fact that I am often connected to an external monitor, and often switch monitors, between the cinema display at my desk and the overhead display in a meeting room (this messes up window placement in other apps, too, that's why I suspect it also interferes with the Jing "sun").
@Scott - Thank you for sharing this tip. The disappearing sun is in fact related to the your monitor setup - something we've been trying to fix. I'm glad you found a workaround, and thanks again for sharing it.
everytime i hit capture the app crashes? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!!!
Why is video only 5 minutes?? So I really cant use this to capture a movie or live sporting event??
@Drew Pagliari - Jing is for quick and easy visual communication – to simply capture and share what you see. It was designed to be a streamlined and efficient screen capture and recording application. You can use Jing to capture short clips of a movie or sporting event, but for longer recordings you will need another application.
Hi,
I just downloaded Jing and I don't see the sun on the desktop. I'm using MAC OS10. Any suggestions?
@Eleanor
If you don't see the sun on any of the edges or corners of your monitor, it's possible that it's running in the menu bar. Do you see this icon: http://bit.ly/2Vg3o8

Just installed Jing. Nifty program but not what I was looking for. Uninstall directions? Mac OS 10.5.8. Couldn't find any mention of it anywhere?
Justin
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on a Mac. So far, none of the work arounds have fixed my disappearing Sun issue. I can't use the activity monitor fix because it doesn't appear as an active process. I can launch Jing and it will appear for a few seconds, but then it quickly disappears from the process list.
I also can't try the right-click fix. Nothing happens.
It's a bummer, I really like Jing but the disappearing sun is making it too inconvenient.
Hi Steph,
Have you by chance contacted our Support people at http://support.techsmith.com?
Also, a new version of Jing is scheduled to come out on December 8. I hope you will give it a try and see if we've fixed this issue. Please let us know.
Thanks for this report. I'm going to pass it on to the team.
Mike Curtis, TechSmith
why wont my jing capture save anymore?
Hi Annie;
Not sure why Jing isn't saving your captures. That's no good. What platform are you on, and where are you trying to save the captures? I can try to help you through this comment field, but I'd recommend contacting our Support people at http://support.techsmith.com.
I guarantee that they'll be a lot more efficient and will get you saving and sharing again in no time.
I just updated to version 2.2.23332 and now I am having the disappearing sun issues. This is happening from both the menu bar feature and the corner sun feature.
I have a Mac Mini with OS X 10.6.2.
Hmmm?
Hi Mark,
I'm going to pass this on to the Jing Devs and Support, but it sounds like Jing doesn't seem to be crashing when you're using it. Instead it just disappears for no reason so it's not there when you need it?
Thanks for the report. If you're willing to investigate further and help us see if we can get to the bottom of this, please open a support ticket at http://support.techsmith.com. We've had some reports of the sun disappearing, but we're not sure of the trigger that's causing it.

I have a Macintosh. Can I edit the Jing Videos using Imovie?
i moved the sum by the dock and now i cant get to it
I've just bought Jing Pro and I can't save any of the pictures! I can just capture but there is no option to save anywhere! What do I do??
@Peter - If you have Jing Pro, you can save your files as MP4s which are editable in iMovie.
@Raul - Not sure. Can you contact our TechSupport:http://support.techsmith.com.
@Rose - Weird. Here is how you can re-create a save button: http://screencast.com/t/ZDg0YmFlM2
hello,
why does jing pro only run with approx.6 frames per second. the video is jerking. sorry, that does not meet my expectations. may you have an answer.
regards from germany, schringo
me I them to download and I tien have to say to you that his functioning very well! But how one makes to send the “video end” to film directly on IMovie (imovie I have MAC)
I just got charged for two version of Jing Pro. I want one, but I'm not sure which is actually sustaining my Jing Pro account and which is not necessary.
Jeremy, I'm going to edit your post to remove your billing information. Meanwhile I'm going to get some one in Customer Service to contact you and straighten this out with you.
We'll be in touch, thanks!

Was the disappearing Jing sun issue ever resolved? I just downloaded it for my new macbook pro with snow leopard and it crashes/disappears when I click on capture. I can see it in my activity monitor but quitting and reopening doesn't seem to help.
Hi Dan,
I'm checking with support and opening a ticket for you. It's really strange that the sun is gone and it's still in Activity Monitor.
Sorry about that...
Mike Curtis
Can I save photos as jpeg rather than png? I want to export to Shutterfly but it only supports jpeg files.
Someone PLEASE tell me how to delete this off my mac. When I try to drag it into the trash it says it can not be deleted. About to try to reset my computer to yesterday and see if that works.
Shame on you for making a product that users can not uninstall.
Hi,
I'm having trouble getting started:
When I select the capture icon in the sunshine in the corner of my computer screen, the sunshine disappears and nothing happens as if Jing is no longer open.
Then, when I try to reopen Jing from my "spotlight" and select it, it says that "Jing is already open" However, I can't see it anywhere (not on the top menu bar, bottom menu bar, and no sunshine in the corner).
I wish I can give you a screencast of this, but I can't. Ahhh!!!
I am on Mac OSX version 10.6.3.
Thanks,
Shaili
I'm having the same problem
Received notice that next time I opened Jing would be told how to update to latest pro version.
Well I've quit and reopened several times no update. Why not Just provide a link for the updater.
Stupid program. Crashes all the time, the "sun" disappears, doesn't save my pictures etc... Hate it. Burn it!

I certainly see quite a few complaints. I used Jing a long time ago and it was fine. Now the little sun is absolutely nowhere to be found. Rather unfortunate.

Wow, looks like the disappearing sun issue has been around since May!! Is Techsmith working on the issue or have they moved on to more important issues.
Very strange.
Jeff
We've not heard of a flare up of issues from Tech Support, but here's a link talking about some of the "under the hood" fixes the Mac has been working on: http://blog.jingproject.com/2010/10/sometimes-its-the-little-thing.html
If you have an issue you're welcome to post it here, but the most effective way we can address them is if they come in via our support team. http://support.techsmith.com. This way we can track them and run diagnostics as needed. It can help uncover a pattern.

Sun doesn't appear on the edge of my screen. Have to reboot just to make it work. :(
Hi there,
The sun has disappeared after I tried to change it to open on launch in the dock of my mac. Can't get the sun back now. Says it's open but where is it?!? I can't see it anywhere!!
Appreciate the help! Thanks! :)
My Jing sun disappears each time my computer goes to sleep. It is very annoying, hitting my keyboard shortcut only to realize that I first have to "End Process" and start Jing again each time.
This has probably got to be the weirdest user interface I have ever used. Totally over-thought and over-smoked. I bet you guys have many people not using this app because it is so weird to use. A sun? eh? In the top RHS corner of the screen? WTF? I just wanna make a screencast.
Hi Andrew,
One good thing is you can move or get rid of the sun entirely, and either use the menu bar or a hotkey. http://www.techsmith.com/learn/jing/tutorials/manage/jing-startup-sun-options/
Thanks!

Hi. I use jing to create screenshots and find it very useful. However, recently the sun has disappeared and I cannot find it anywhere. I search in the search bar and when I click on jing a message comes up that says its at the edge of my screen. It isn't though. I've looked everywhere on my macbook but cannot find it. Please help. Thanks.
Anne Marie
I tried the fix mentioned above with the following instructions that worked well and quick and I didn't have to reboot my MAC.

In addition, I also changed my Preferences by adding a Hotkey, which put it in my menu bar as well and got rid of the sun.

When I am viewing the video that I recorded I cannot see the whole screen I recorded. I can use the slide bars to move the video to see the parts of the creen that are missing, but I want to see it as a whole. Any suggestions? Thank you

Jing definetly sucks.
User experience is really bad. ( SO bad, there is a tutorial about quitting this dumb app)
Design is ugly.
Functionalities do not match equivalent apps on the market.
I recommend not downloading this program.
I can see the Jing sun now, lol, you just have to crazily move your mouse around in the corner where it's supposed to be.
The Jing sun has disappeared from my top right screen and everytime I open the icon from apps or desktop is says it is open. I have been using JING for over a year and this is the first time this has happened. I can't trash the icons because it says it is open. I can't change position using preferences.
Do I need to reinstall?
I have been telling eveyone about what a great boon JING is for writing feedback.
HELP
cheers Yvonne
Same problem as Yvonne on August 29, 2011. Jing has disappeared from the upper right corner. Trying to start it gets message saying it is already running.
well, I have installed the free version on my mac 10.5.8 and all seemed to be going fine and I have jing app folder on my desktop, but I don't see any "sun" figure on my internet page - or anywhere on the web page at all, how come?
What happened?
I am on my laptop, but it is connect directly to the DSL, not wireless
help, thanks
I have ALWAYS had this intermittent problem where the sun just disappears, and no amount of swiping will show it. When I go to the applications folder (Mac), and try to restart it, I can't, because it says it is running. I am NOT going to retsrat my compueter for one lousy little screen capture program, so a lot of time I limp along without it. Jing need a kill button. This "I'm already running but hah hah you can't see me or use me" functionality stinks.
Can Jing be used to capture an image that extend off the screen i.e. can it scroll down?
Man. 3 years after and still the 'not seeing the sun' issue. Still the only workaround, like also mentioned already: Open the activity monitor, kill jing and restart it. Should work fine then. However this issue still sucks. I'm a fan of TechSmith products, but that's just a pain in the ass.
(oh and your captcha sucks as well!)
How can I save a video that I captured into a document in finder?
same no sun issue. I've restarted killed program reinstalled. Ridiculous that there is not yet a reliable solution to this issue.
The format is silly anyways. Just make a menu already.
Jing works brilliantly - the second time! First click on 'capture' allows whole screen snap only. Press 'esc' and capture works the way it should.
What's going on here?
