Jing for Mac: Common Questions Revealed
Hey there,
If you're using Jing on a Mac, you might have asked yourself:
- How do I start using Jing?
- Why can't I run Jing from the dock?
- Do I have to use the sun? Can I move it?
- How do I turn this thing off?
Fortunately, Casey in TechSupport put together a 2 minute video to answer some of the most common questions people have about Jing for the Mac..
Enjoy!
If you have specific questions about Jing, you can also Contact Support directly.
Edit:I was asked how I edited and resized the video. This was done with Camtasia Studio, one of the other screen recording tools that TechSmith makes.
Would like it to handle screen caps with scrolling - works for video but not caps? Got any plans for that?
Paul - No plans for that, sorry. But if you haven't already, check out SnagIt; it can handle all sorts of captures including several ways to do scrolling captures.
Jason - Yeah, we know and we're working on it. Sorry for the inconvenience.
When will Windows users (if ever) be able to put Jing in the Windows equivalent of the menu bar (the task bar)?
It looks much more elegant in the taskbar on the Mac than the default Sun.
Tom,
windows users already have Jing available in the Task bar, and like the OS X version, in Windows, unchecking "show launcher" will leave Jing to only reside in the task tray.
How does it go so fast???
I can't get the annotation toolbar to show. What am I doing wrong?
Why save the file as SWF. Can I change to Quick Time Movie?
Hello,
The first video I have captured is a .swf file...but I can't read it with Real, nor Windows Media Player, nor VLC, nor I-Movie...
Can I change it to a.mov or .mp4 file ?
@ Mark - That's strange. Have you looked at this article?

Nice program but I want the option of when recording video, to select the sound source either from Microphone, Safari, Firefox, or System Audio. I don't see a way to do this at present, or am I missing something?
DB - Recording various audio sources with Jing is somewhat tricky, but it is possible.
Check out this blog post on recording system audio on the mac for more info.
Bonjour,
J'ai installé Jing et quand je visionne ce que j'ai enregistré, je n'ai pas d'image et le son est saturé. Merci de m'aider.
amicalement
just started using Jing today and I'm totally digging it - but for some reason the output audio quit after about 5 vids - on mac 10.4.11 - problem is not system volume, iTunes is fine. Any ideas?
How do I get videos to open in the Jing Editor? My videos open in the Jing Preview. I can't work out how to open the editor.
How do I uninstall Jing. I can't send it to trash because it's always running. I'm using it on a OS X leopard on a new iMac

To quit Jing so you can move it to the trash, first mouse over the sun launcher. Then, click More (it looks like two gears). Next click Quit. (It looks like a stop sign with a hand on it.)

I am using Jing as video tour guides for "how to" videos. They are in swf. but I need them for .mov or mp4. I use quicktime, and that does not want to open it either. Real player also will not open it.
how do i scroll in and out with the mac mouse
I installed Jing and I am not seeing the little sun in the corner of my window. When I click on the Jing icon I keep getting the message that the application is on and I can see the sun. But I do not see the sun. What can I do?
I have the same problem with not seeing the sun and then it says the program is running. I click on the app and it appears again but itdisappears everytime I try and record a video. I was not having any trouble and now I can't seem to record anymore. I have no idea how to fix it and I have spent lots of time re-doing videos. I can capture but then when I am through and hit stop the video disappears and is not in the history with the ones I made when I first started using jing about 3 months ago. HELP!
I think you need to address the saving of videos as a quicktime file rather than an SWF. It seems a lot of people are having difficulties with SWF's and don't know how to open them; me being one of those people.
Thanks.
how can you make the recording time longer?
.mov is far preferable for pro editing to .swf. is there an export to .mov feature? also, can i download captured video to my local? lastly, i would prefer to keep the only copies on my local and delete any remote hosting--is this possible? many thanks!
Cannot see the sun on my desktop. I just installed JING on a Mac running OS 10.4.11. Any ideas??
I just installed Jing on my Mac OS X, and it is working fine for capturing videos. However, when I try to upload a video onto screencast, I get a prompt saying Jing needs a critical update. I click OK, and a disk image is automatically downloaded. I open it, and all it seems to do is try to reinstall Jing. Even after doing this, it demands the same update. Is there some sort of error with the update, or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
-Andy
Hi,
Great program. Recently though, I've been running into a few problems: I can't find the sun icon/menu -I've checked the entire screen, and I have no way of closing Jing to reopen it. When I try to open it, it tells me it's already running. Do I have any options other than just restarting my computer?
Thanks!
how can you put it on youtube with out ing being pro
So far I love this product but I do have one issue that's driving me crazy! When I try to run a video, 9 times out of 10 the whole thing just shuts off and the application disappears from my desktop. When I restart it it just does it all over again. It's like I have to get lucky to run a video. What's up with that?
Hi, i got jing yesterday and after using it for a while i decided it would be easier if i got the app to launch on startup.
When i turned on my mac today the icon didn't appear and it told me that the program was already running! rather annoying.
As a few other people have this problem this is how i solved it.
open the application folder and right click the jing icon.
click on "show package contents"
click on the contents folder
then mac OS folder
then on the icon labeled jing.
When i did this the sun icon appeared, which allowed me to change my preferences. i then quit jing and restarted my mac
in now works again.
hope this helps
I have the same problem as others report - the Jing sun does not show, the circling arrows are for Mac .sync, not for Jing, and I can't find a way to force it to quit. I tried the instructions that Dano left about right-clicking on the Jing app., etc., but all that eventually led to was Terminal, and while Terminal said that if I closed it, it would terminate Jing, it did not.
Techsmith, you have to get on this. Too many people are reporting this as a problem. It's not us, it's you.
I'm trying to launch Jing on my Mac but it says that it's already running....however there is no "sun" anywhere on the screen.
Any thoughts?
Like most of these recent posts, I can't see the sun, no matter what I do. Advice?
If the sun is hidden (on a mac osx), how do you bring it back? Is there a hot key I could use?
Ditto with the hidden sun. Its an issue. The ability to quit and restart the program without rebooting would be nice.
I have purchased this application, and tried to update and now it does not work, {-:(
Larry, this is terrible news. Please contact Tech Support http://support.techsmith.com so they can efficiently get you back in business.

jing is not ready for use... it would be wonderful IF... it saved movies to a common format, mpeg4 etc... it is very buggy in my macbook pro,, never know what its doing after a capture it dithers for a long time...so, get it simple make it imovie compatible and i,ll give you £20 for it... until then i,m uninstalling it,, but... a heartfelt sincere thanks for trying Alan McC.
everytime I try to share my captured image Jing asked for update
but I don't know how? after i click OK then what?

It's a swell idea, but I could not get the application to record the audio. I tried a few times and then threw the app out. I would have paid money for this, but decided against it. Why? Not because it didn't work. No. Just because even after I watched the video tutorial it didn't work. So I asked myself why it didn't work. Could be some settings. Could be the free version won't allow audio capture. Could be that not all video sources are captured by this software. If there is a video format out there that refuses to be captured, then the application is essentially devalued. If anything else besides a user error then it's worthless. If it's a user error then the application should be more intuitive.
I say all this to help because you've got a lot going for you. Write me back and talk it through and I'll buy the application from you.

My workaround for when I "lose the sun" on OS X, and can't re-launch Jing because it is already running (as mentioned in earlier posts):
1) Open OS X "Activity Monitor" app, find the Process Name "Jing" and stop it
2) Wait a few seconds, make sure it is gone from Activity Monitor
3) Launch Jing again
This time, it launches normally, and the "sun" correctly positions itself in the corner of my primary screen *.
HTH,
Scott
* The Jing "sun" disappears for me pretty regularly. Not sure why, but I suspect it has to do with the fact that I am often connected to an external monitor, and often switch monitors, between the cinema display at my desk and the overhead display in a meeting room (this messes up window placement in other apps, too, that's why I suspect it also interferes with the Jing "sun").
@Scott - Thank you for sharing this tip. The disappearing sun is in fact related to the your monitor setup - something we've been trying to fix. I'm glad you found a workaround, and thanks again for sharing it.
everytime i hit capture the app crashes? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!!!
Why is video only 5 minutes?? So I really cant use this to capture a movie or live sporting event??
@Drew Pagliari - Jing is for quick and easy visual communication – to simply capture and share what you see. It was designed to be a streamlined and efficient screen capture and recording application. You can use Jing to capture short clips of a movie or sporting event, but for longer recordings you will need another application.
Hi,
I just downloaded Jing and I don't see the sun on the desktop. I'm using MAC OS10. Any suggestions?
@Eleanor
If you don't see the sun on any of the edges or corners of your monitor, it's possible that it's running in the menu bar. Do you see this icon: http://bit.ly/2Vg3o8

Just installed Jing. Nifty program but not what I was looking for. Uninstall directions? Mac OS 10.5.8. Couldn't find any mention of it anywhere?
