Jing for Windows - Version 1.5
Posted on Tuesday April 15, 2008 by Bill Scanlon
Hiya.
Here's the faster, leaner Jing for Windows!
Here's what this update contains:
- Capture selection should start more quickly
- History should be open more quickly
- Memory 'leaks' cleaned up
- Over all memory usage decreased
- Automatic selection of 'sub windows' restored
You can download it here.
NOTE: There is no corresponding Jing for Mac update.

Hello!
This update makes Jing a lot faster! Since my RAM is limited (512 MB) I always turned Jing off before and started it once I needed it. Now I can actually keep it on the whole time.
This is how my RAM looks like atm:

By the way: Jing just integrates awesome into Dropbox, a tool for collaborating and sharing whole folders over the internet with other people (syncs automatically etc.)
Thanks again for this great tool!

Luckily I have 4GB of ram, so I didn'r really notice the leaks. The slowdown on capture was apparent, have to say - good work!

Not sure if related to the update. Though i just made my first Jing video since installing it this morning. All went well, though right as i was about to play it for first time (before sharing it), my Jing totally shut down by itself - and i list the video.
No odd messages in my event log... I will let you know if it happens again or may be a one-off, unrelated event.

@JFranchetti
If it does keep happening, please do contact TechSmith tech support and let them know.
Sorry about that

I can't get the video to record from my mics. I only have USB mics. I use a Blue Snowball and I also have a mic on my Logitech camera. Both work and are functioning but Jing can't record sound. I have had one and both plugged in and still no sound with the video. HELP

@Greg
You should ask TechSmith technical support.
They should be able to help cause Jing for Windows just uses the default microphone, so it's probably just not set up quite as Jing expects.

Firefox users beware- there might be a problem upgrading your Jing to 1.5
See this exchange with Techsmith email support:

I was prompted to update my version of Jing today. (I'm on a PC running XP and browse with Firefox.)
I've tried several times, but get this error:
"Unable to connect to the remote server.
A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host 199.254.220.10:80"
I can't share any screenshots today, which is a drag. Help!

Hi Tom;
Thank you for contacting Techsmith with your concerns.
Please use Internet Explorer and attempt your download again.
Alternatively, you can clear all private data for Firefox and try again with Firefox.
Please let me know if you continue to have trouble.

And my second reply:
Thanks Casey. I ended up uninstalling Jing, downloading the updated package from your blog, and reinstalling. I was really pleased that Jing somehow recognized and auto-logged me into my account online- very cool.
Can't update using FF? Lame. You guys might wanna get that out there on the blog- I bet 1/2 of your users are FFheads like me :)
thanks,
Tom
###end###
I encourage Jing to blog about this update problem with Firefox asap.

@Tom
The concern Tech Support was addressing by having you clear browser cache or try a different one is that browsers might cache the set up file when Jing tries to get it. Then you end up with the same one. And you are in an update loop.
Update? Sure
(same old version is returned)
Update? I just did, but ok.
(same old version is returned)
Update? Stop it!
(same old version is returned)
We think this happens when either the browser or (more likely) a proxy server between Jing and TechSmith keeps returning the old set up file when Jing requests the new one.
We've tried some trickery to fix it and it 'seems' to have gotten better.
But I digress...
I don't think that's what's happening in your case.
I don't think yours was a problem with FireFox.
Sounds like Jing wasn't able to hit the TechSmith servers for some reason. I don't have a guess.

Upgrade is great and love the window capture. As mentioned above would be great if there was a copy to clip board function. That would make quick screen captures put in email so much faster.

I upgraded using Firefox just fine. All my Jing upgrades have been flawless. I can see the increase in screen capture time, wonderful! Thanks for all the hard work guys!
One quick suggestion:
I would like a way, when I'm selecting to save my image/vid as a file, to browse the location on demand. I hate having to change the directory in the settings all the time, and even though I've created a "Jing capture" folder, I still have to go in once the capture is done, cut and paste the img to the appropriate folder, etc. and that just seems to be extra work. If possible, have a selection that says "save to XX folder, OR, select folder at save time" or something to that effect. ??
Thanks again!!

Thanks for letting us know what you need.
FYI features requests should go thru the feedback
They'll just get lost in here. :)

I just found this program, so version 1.5 is my first installed version. Every video I have shows a length of 0:00. When I play the video after recording it it does seem to have all the frames, but it plays in less than a second no matter how long I recorded. I am running Vista SP1. Has anyone else had this issue?

Hello all
I would like to use my jing video inside of a flash movie - using a btn to call an external swf(my jing) and loading it into my movie
when I do this all I see is a grey background where jing should be ..
I have camtasia and it's easily done with that but I just wanted a short and easy route (jing)
thoughts?
