Jing a Trojan? Epicly unlikely.
Update: 10/5/10:
Sometimes when we release an updated version of Jing, one or two anti-virus companies flag it as a potential virus or trojan. A common one to do this is Kaspersky. When we learn about this, we contact the anti-virus company and so far they have been very quick to put Jing back on the safe list where it belongs. So, if you see a warning, if you would be so kind as to contact support?, send a tweet to @jingtips, or @techsmith, we'll get it resolved. Thanks!
A few users have been kind enough to point out to us that AVG antivirus software is currently giving a warning that the Jing .EXE has a trojan in it. Jing doesn't contain a trojan, or any other type of virus.
While the Jing Project is new, TechSmith has been around for 20 years. Honest, no trojans. :)
We're trying to get a hold of AVG to get it sorted out. We'll be sure to update you when we find out why we generate a false positive. Thanks for letting us know. We really appreciate the feedback.

I had Jing both versions installed on my Mac and have Parallels 3.0 with Windows XP and using AVG installed and just found the Jing exe for 1.4 was picked up as a virus. Very odd.
Ralph--I haven't confirmed it myself, but a report above said that if you update AVG this problem should go away.
I just got done downloading and installing JING for the first time. I have current AVG and didn't have problems with the install. (It did give me problems yesterday though???)
Hi folks,
Oh, I'm awful! I love Jing, I spread the word to everyone but I completely forgot to send this error as feedback to Techsmith. I will of course remedy this, but just to let you know, I had this error as well on 3/04/08 and it was due to Windows XP creating a restore version of the Jing exe. Haven't gotten the error again.
Aloha,
Cheryll
My Kaspersky antivirus just quarantined Jing's latest upate as a Trojan. 8/24/2010 8:42:10 PM Quarantined virus HEUR:Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Generic C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\JingSetup.exe High
What do I do now?
Yep my Kaspersky AV has just reported the same issue with the latest installer - did not report this before...
Hi,
We contacted Kaspersky and they were really expedient and it's all worked out. This false positive report should be taken care of now.

OK... Avast, Norton, zonealarm. All say its a virus. come on...
So, I downloaded Jing on the recommendation of my University prof. Now my Kaspersky virus software has told me the same thing all these other people are saying - that jing_setup.exe is a trojan. Looking at this blog, this has been an ongoing problem for 2+ years. Can I trust Jing? I really like the software, but I will have to uninstall for the sake of protecting my hardware?
Stevo & Richard,
Are you saying you're still getting warning this late after release? I assume your antivirus software is updated?
Our understanding is that all this has been resolved shortly after the Aug 24 release.
Thanks for the report,
Mike Curtis, TechSmith
Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 just reported that Jing is a trojan. I then did a full scan on the computer and the computer went haywire and restarted. I booted into Safe mode and I'm now rescanning the computer. I hope it works this time.....
I work for an ISP and our content filter is also reporting your setup exe is a trojan. Unfortunate.
Have Kaspersky Pure updated today and it gave warning when I attempted to download Jing
Heya,
Yeah, I had the same problems with Karspersky, but now I switched to AVG Threat Lab and everything seems fine. It scans a webpage prior to accessing it and I was waiting for a pop-up to come up when I attempted to download Jing, but it did not. So thrilled..!

I scanned the program file with my anti-virus program, Avast Anti-Virus, and there was no threat detected. No need to worry!
Jing turned up as a trojan in Microsoft security essentials. And it curruptet Google Chrome so that i couldnt start up.
Have uninstalled, removed all the trojans and reinstalled Chrome...
This is a warning to everyone wanting to install this software.
