The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere.

An Inside Look: Tech Support

Posted on Wednesday March 19, 2008 by Mike Curtis

Meet AJ Morris. You might remember his name from a while back when he shared a multi-image capture tip. AJ’s been a big proponent of using Jing to help make our Tech Support even better. When Jing first came out you can imagine that some of the Tech Support folks were a bit nervous. “We’re going to support a free ‘Project’?” As it turns out, Jing has been a great asset for those in support. I fired up a little camcorder and “interviewed” AJ a while back. Let me warn you—this is not an Anton-quality production, but it’s short and you’ll get a little peek inside TechSmith.

We have started using Jing in our support workflow and it very helpful in showing exactly what our users are seeing, especially in more esoteric support complaints. Good job!

This is exciting. I am doing a book review at a friend's house tomorrow, and she has no internet available. I really wanted to show a short video of the author from a TV show, so I played in on my computer at home, and copied it with Jing. It works great!

But, when I was done I set my preferences so that Jing doesn't start at Startup. I don't like background stuff I'm not using running on my computer. But, now Jing has disappeared! It's not in my Programs listing on Vista, nor in my Program Files on C:. Where is it hiding? How do I start it again when I need it?

Hi Muttiallen,
Take a peek to see if Jing is in Start > TechSmith > Jing. If it's not there, we'll figure out if it's just hiding or really missing.

I just installed SP1 on Vista and now Jing crashes and does not work. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and that did not help. Andy suggestions?

Hi, love the concept, and on the Mac, the execution.

However, on Vista x64 (SP1), while the Jing "sun" shines on my desktop, it's not active, and can't be interacted with. I do have the tray icon displaying and functioning.

Is this a known issue?

Why does he have a different upload screen than I do?

He seems to have a dropdown next to the share button.
I have version 1.4.8028 and it says I'm up to date!

Good eyes Thomas!
We recorded AJ earlier this winter. He's shown using an older version. You're up to date!

I'm disappointed not to have gotten a response from Techsmith (I reported the problem here and via the tech support feedback option, but I did solve the desktop problem with Vista by turning off Aero. Once I did that, the Jing "sun" became interactive.

I love Jing! I'm using it for documenting how I do certain processes for a client. My question is, even though I have high-end audio (that's my business:)) hardware on my computer, I can't seem to get Jing to record audio. Is there a way Jing can choose from a selection of audio input devices?

Thanks.

Denise :

I have been using jing for about a month and I love it.
I would capture my image and then click on share and a window would pop up that it would say
"uplaoding.....
Capture Shared "
And then it would have underlined "you've shared your capture. your url is on your clipboard"
I would doubleclick that and it would take me directly to Windows internet and it would be in my search line and on the screen.
i can no longer do that.
All it says now is that "youve shared your cature"
And I can not find it.
Please help !!!!
