Jing videos don't display
Posted on Tuesday January 29, 2008 by Bill Scanlon
Hiya,
Due to a paucity of communication it appears that Screencast.com will require the latest Flash Player before it will play Jing videos.
Most browsers seem to prompt you to update.
It appears that some will not. And instead you will see...kind of nothing.
You can google for 'adobe flash player' to find the latest.
Or try here.
If you update to the latest Flash Player, videos should play fine after that.
Sorry about the hassle.
We'll see if there's something we can do to remedy it.
Feel free to use this space to rant and vent...
have a good day,
Bill 'this is not the kind of blog entries I wanted to start doing' scanlon

The very first day after downloading Jing I used it to create an educational program to instruct our staff on how to use our newest software. We are in the medical industry and have to make progress notes on the computer, we are trying to go paperless and the process for getting to the notes section takes several steps. With Jing I simply captured each step, and sent the whole process to the group.
Saved me from having to work with each person individually. Thanks Jing

"You can google for 'adobe flash player' to find the latest."
Or you could go to the best repository of Mac software in the whole world and find exactly what you need:

This is proving to be somewhat of a problem. I share some vids pretty widely and a lot of people aren't getting notices about flash player, especially on Mac.
Any update on if/when this might be remedied?

Looking like we're gonna have to ride this one out.
:(
Going forward, we're going to attempt to be less bad about it such updates.
Sorry.

1. using ie the videos are either not loading at all or take forever SERVER ISSUE???
2. with firefox it states that flash 9.0 is required even though it is already installed. uninstalling/ reinstalling does not help.

@AF
Flash 9.0.115 is required. I had to upgrade though I had 9.0.45 on FireFox and 9.0.47 or something on IE.
NOTE that you need to upgrade each.
Flash is an ActiveX control on IE and a plugin in FireFox.
Hope that helps.
As for Screencast.com slowness, it seems a little slow today, I'll let'em know.

How do I save the video image to my zip drive? I need this video for a presentation, and will be using another computer.

Are you sure it's not just a security setting? I use the noscript plugin for Firefox and sometimes I get prompted to upgrade the Flash player when in fact, all I need to do is allow the URL I'm looking at.

Isn't that bad... your actually sort of improving that the software on the pc's is up to date which could be a major security improvement.
If you would finally implement SSH...

Downloaded Jing, shared and saved a SWF file unto my desk top. Unable to view what I saved. Error Mesg "MS does not recognize the format." Have downloaded the latest version of Adobe macromedia flash, still unable to view swf.file. What's wrong?

macQdor--To view a SWF file, open it in a Web browser. You can select this by right-clicking and choosing Open With... or by dragging the file from your desktop directly into a Web browser.
SWF files have no default viewer.

Hi
we have just started using Jing to great effect and our workgroup were really entusiastic about the possibilities. Sadly with the recent upgrade which now requires the upgraded Flash Player we cannot distribute clips. Most of our staff have the previous version of Flash and as they are unable to run upgrades themselves we have to wait until our IT section gets around to thier periodic upgrades. Is there any way around this- like a virtual Flash player?

@Kate
Really sorry about that.
I don't know that there's much that can be done.
Ummm...so I'm guessing that IE would be locked down from installing the Flash Player ActiveX control.
Maybe try FireFox and get its Flash Player plugin?
Though if you need to install FireFox...probably can't do that either...but maybe?
Again, sorry.

A quick update from the Screencast.com team, we are doing what we can to improve the issues with the required flash player upgrade. Our investigation thus far has found that many sites are reporting similar issues with flash player upgrades (the most common culprit is thought to be a faulty flash player installation). We're going to test some ideas and hope to improve the experience soon; in the meantime, we've found the following steps to be the best remedy:
1) Close all browser windows.
2) Uninstall Flash Player using the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller.
Note: Some users have reported greater success if they reboot at this time.
3) Reinstall the Flash Player Plugin from Adobe.
If you continue to have a difficult time viewing flash content on Screencast.com we want to know about it! Please contact TechSmith's Technical Support team here, or send the Screencast.com Development Team feedback here.

Andy, any thoughts as to placing a general notice and link at the bottom of every hosted video page? I was flummoxed for a few moments yesterday after experiencing the blank playback screen before thinking to check here for a solution, which most folks won't do.

Thanks for the great product!
I used the product to capture some videos last week and it worked great. Today, I am having an issue with the audio portion. It seems to be stuck on MUTE. I have tried toggling the button back and forth but cannot get the audio to work. The video portion is fine. Any thoughts?

@Karen
I can't really help you much here (blogs are not a great spot to do Technical Support), so I'll refer you to them Click here for Technical Support
But in general Jing uses the sound recording default device.
So you can set that in control panel to the device you want to use and adjust it's settings (maybe it's muted).
A 'real' version of Jing should have that all built into the application.
Also, fyi if you wanna record the system sounds, you can try setting the sound card to the default device and then within it, see if it has a 'what u hear' option (not all sound cards do).
Hope that helps

Paul, indeed that is one of the things we are considering and testing. Just to give you a little insight on our thoughts, we would prefer not showing that type of messaging to every viewer. Unfortunately, in order to do that we would need to detect that the issue is occurring...at this point we have not found a way to do this so we may just bite the bullet and show the message to everyone.
Our next update is still a couple weeks away but I expect the problem to be significantly improved at that time. Our apologizes for your the difficulty you experienced.

Just wanted to write again to say that this is continuing to be a huge problem for me, especially w/ people on Macs, even after they upgrade their Flash, on all different browsers.
It's to the extent that I'm considering stopping my use of Jing until you guys get this worked out.
Not trying to be bitter here, but I do want you guys to know that this is seriously gumming up the works for many of us.
