Write your own Share and Embed code
Posted on Wednesday November 28, 2007 by Matt Dyer
Because of the multitude of ways you can set up the FTP and file sharing options, we can't automatically generate share or embed code for you. What we did do was create a versatile system that lets you create your own code. We've created tags that act as placeholders which are automatically replaced by Jing every time you share with the relevant information (like the name of the file).
Here's an example. If I were to set up Jing to share to a folder named "Jing" on my local hard drive using the File output, I would want to get back path to that file on my Clipboard when I clicked Share. To do that, I would enter this code: C:\Jing\[filename]
The location of the file is specified, and the Jing automatically places the [filename] tag with the name you gave the file. If I were to name an image "blogtest" and hit the Share button, the text copied to my Clipboard is "C:\Jing\blogtest.png". This simple substitution allows you to write whatever kind of code you want to get back on your Clipboard.
To set up the FTP Share code, instead of the local directory use the DNS address of the Web accessible directory where you uploaded your file. For a directory named "share" it might look something like this: http://www.yourDomain.com/share/[filename].
In addition to the [filename] tag, there are also [width] and [height] tags for writing video embed tags. To write video embed code, use the same techniques as above, but use the embed tag. An example would look like this: < embed src="http://www.yourDoman.com/Jing/[filename]" HEIGHT=[height] WIDTH=[width]>

a little difficult for me to understand. I liked "Save" as I knew how to do that. This description is a bit confusing. Any chance of a demo?

The shoemaker's children have no shoes. Is it possible the screencasting company is not using their own software to describe a complicated process

Can you explain in a little more detail the width and height tags.

I think I get it now...
using the tags for file, I can now save captures to a location on my corporate network, and then have the link in clipboard to copy in an email or whatever... nice.

Can someone please translate this all into English for someone who knows nothing about writing code for HTML?
I just want to figure out how, once make my little video, to embed it in my blog at blogger.
I know how to insert pictures there, but have never done a video other than the easy way from Youtube.
Any guidance written "for dummies" would be much appreciated.

I have written a lot of instructions in my day and this one I consider incomplete. You don't tell us what type of filename extension we should be using for the videos and you don't explain anything about the height and width of the videos either.
What extension should we be using to create the files? If there is more than one, which one creates the smallest size file?
What is the standard height and width of the videos that are stored by the Jing software? Can we change that once we have created and stored the file on our computer?
I'm going to try and follow these instructions, but I really think you should update the information contained in this page.

Nice feature, But every time I make a capture, I need it to be saved in another directory. Each capture belongs to something that is located in a certain folder. The capture needs to be saved in the same folder.
Now I have to save it to the shared folder and then copy it to the destination folder.
This is a big disadvantage. It should be better to also have the save button.
Then u can share it to the preselected folder, by using the share button. You than can also save it to a arbitrary folder, by using the save button.
Thank you
Louis

Matthew--If all you want to do is embed video on your blog, your easiest option is to use the Screencast.com hosting output. Select Screencast.com as your output, click the Embed button, and then paste the code that Jing puts on your Clipboard into your blog post. You only need to write your own code if you're using FTP hosting for your file.
Celes--Jing automatically makes all videos SWF files. There are no options for other output types.
There is no standard width or height for a Jing video; videos are always the width and height of the recording area. The tags are used to substitute the real dimensions of the video in the code each time it is generated.
For instance, if you record a video that is 300x250, the [width] tag is replaced by 300 and the [height] tag is replaced with 250. When writing embed code, if you need either the width or height of the video, use the tags to ensure that the video is embedded at the right size every time.

Please make the filename not place spaces when creating the file. For example "http://www.quickpacks.com/assets/videos/12_17_2007 06_20 AM.swf" The space makes pasting the link not valid - since we would need to add the ascii spaces.

I want to know how to display the latest image only in a php file. Hear me this is innovative. www.mydomain.com/index.php would automatically show my latest screenshot/video only. So rather than sending a PM I just tell my co-workers to goto the afore said domain.
So simple, but just try to google it! I have tried finding a script for that for almost 4 hours with no luck. :(

When I record a video, the sound comes through fine. Then in history, I will go check if I like how it turned out, and I don't have any sound. Do I have to have a microphone plugged in? When I did this, it worked but don't want the users to have to use a microphone to hear the video.
thanks

Is it possible to crop the recorded video? So that everything from the captured area would display, it would be just smaller. This would be handy for blogs that have quite narrow text body. I tried to change width and height in the embed code but it would just cut off a portion of my video.

Could you add a couple more tags like Date and Time and Unique....
This would allow us to make a directory with that day or a time to seperate out the files. That list of files is going to get really big for people that use it a lot.

Why isn't the paid version of Camtasia 5.0 as easy to use as Jing? You have to jump through a lot of hoops to get embed code to paste on your web site. Is there a way to use Jing in conjunction with the paid 5.0 version?

Nope, I can't get my mind round this. I'd use the default, screencast.com, if it wasn't for the fact that the download speed is VERY slow. So I'm using the File option. The logic escapes me, so I'm having to use Dreamweaver to create the pages to view the videos.

great, so it creates a flash file and places it on my drive. Now what? Am I to divine what code I might use to place this in a web page. If I choose embed I get two attribute tags and nothing more.
Why not give a full proper object/embed tag?
Also finding the tag info on the clip board is documented where?
I like this "project" and it makes a nice capture but actually using it is a pain.
There is no help, no feedback no documentation no context menus and no chance to change your mind about publishing location.
By making the project idiot proof you have ensured only an idiot would use it.

in english...one more time please Matt.
So I have a swf. I want to put it on my site (I can load it using ftp or other system) and I just want to specify a different height and width for the embed code. Where do I do that and how do i generate that code?
maybe a video to show us :)?

pete--Just to clarify, you're looking to change the size of the embedded video through the use of embed code?
Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Our videos don't scale when you change the dimensions in the embed code. The idea behind placing the embed code above in your FTP or File settings is that Jing automatically inserts the correct height and width in the code and then copies it to your Clipboard. You can just paste it then.

On Mac uploading to personal ftp site causes app to hang. Not sure what's going on. Works fine if I use screencast.com.

Great feature, but useless to me, because none of my servers have FTP setup anymore. As you know, FTP is insecure. Would it be possible to add SFTP support?
Cheers!

Love the software!
Is there a way to set the resolution of the output file? The video playback is HUGE. I want to capture a screen but always play it back at 640x480
Thanks,
