File, the new Save
Posted on Wednesday November 28, 2007 by Matt Dyer
With all the new sharing options that are available in 1.4, you may be saying to yourself, "Those are great, but what happened to the Save button?" At first glance it may look like we've gotten rid of save functionality in Jing, but when we added FTP and Flickr support we decided to make saving more like our sharing options, and so we came up with File output.
What does clicking Share with File selected do? It saves a copy of your file. It doesn't, however, pop up a Save as dialog every time. Instead, you set up your File output just like you would Screencast.com, FTP or Flickr. You select a target directory (like C:\Jing) and when you hit Share, your file is sent there. Your file can be named in the preview window (the default name is the date and time). The destination directory can be anywhere your local machine can save to, including network drives. This makes File perfect for those who have a place to share on their network but can't use outside file hosting.
To configure file:
Because of the wide variety of ways you might configure your File output, we can't generate the share or embed code for you. This means you get to create your own. To make this easier, we've added tags that act as variables that you can stick in your own code. For more information on using these tags, check out this blog post.
For those wanting a quick and dirty example of how a share or embed link might look, try adjusting this path for your own use. In the Share field, replace the file path while leaving the [filename] tag for Jing to replace automatically: on PC C:\Jing\[filename] or on Mac ~/Desktop/[filename]

I can tell you folks are trying very hard to move ahead and improve Jing, but you are going a defferent direction than I want/need to go. I have no wish or need to upload files to a server somewhere, just want to be able to save locally. I have another program that captures all types of screens, including scrolling pages, but does not have Jing's simple annotation that I like. At this point, it has even become complex to just to save a capture. I don't feel it is worth my time to figure it out. So, relunctly, I am giving up on Jing.. I really wanted to like it.

Hi there - thanks for your honest feedback. I can understand your immediate reaction, but we feel we've made the process of saving locally both richer and in many cases a lot easier. You can still save just like you always have - you just select file as the option and click the "share" button to "share" it to your local drive. The nice part is that you no longer need to navigate to the same directory time after time - now you just click share and it automatically saves it to the same location everytime. You of course can change that when the time occurs to do so.
Additionally, saving files locally has become a lot more powerful for teams/organizations that want to share files back and forth, but would rather use their corporate network to host the files. Now, users can enter in the network drive path and easily upload their captures there, all while still getting a URL or embed code back to share (if they desire - that's optional too).
I hope you find that Jing isn't straying too far from your needs, but we're trying to stay true to our quick and simple "sharing" mantra in an effort to improve daily digital conversations.

Ok, I get it, you are offering more choices than save file to local drive or hosting with screencast. You have to hover and click your mouse over the desired location, screencast.com. FTP, or File before you save the file. I just took a screencast shot of the process. That is cool, taking a pic of what i wanted to share. Great job Guys and Gals!

I popped back to the jing blog to have a moan about the screencast annual subs going up to 41 UK pounds (I'm sure it was 40 USD last week?) when I found the update! And I'm nearly there but I flunked with the embed code for the swf. I've managed to set up an ftp transfer to my server, but can't seem to sort out the embed code to copy and paste for web pages. Any chance of a screencast tutorial, pretty please? Thanks

Pete--I think a quick screencast is a great idea. In the meantime, here's a quick example of what embed code for a SWF file on your FTP server might look like: <embed src="http://www.yourDoman.com/Jing/[filename]" HEIGHT=[height] WIDTH=[width]>

Hey guys , i just upgraded to your latest build 1.4.7331 and had a hard time figuring out how to save a file locally , i had to go to the help section to figure this out . The new way might make sense from a design perspective ,but is not intuitive at all from a user stand point .
Thanks

I really miss the save button. I do a lot of screen captures for tutorials and they always go into different folders. If nothing else, I'd like to see the browse button work to take me to my harddrive so I can choose the save location instead of having to type in the full save location.

hey,
i have been using Jing for couple of months now. Use it heavily to take screenshots. But I dont understand why "Saving to file" has to be "non-standard". It should be simple and nobody needs to refer to Help to use it.
I have hard time figuring out how to use it. And for the new users, it will be difficult for the first time.
I think simple file save should be there as well.
Thanks

Love the option to save the file locally. It would be nice to have the option to just save the file - even if it's still a swf file - without the embedded controls. So if you select a 800x600 area the actual video file is 800x600 not 800x618 (or so).
Thanks for a great app!

I've gotta say that this is a horrendous update. Jing rocked because it was stupid simple and I've literally told 1,000's of people about it.
I own a 7-figure online marketing company and I have to waste my time coming here to figure out how to save an image to my desk top.
There are no instructions that come with the new options and when you hit "file" and type in a file name, it just sits there. You have no idea what to do next. You hit "share" hoping that will do something but you just get a message that says "your file has been shared"
With who! Where the heck did it go!?!?!
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PUT THE SAVE BUTTON BACK!
As for me, I'm off to find another screen shot program that's easier to use, and I'm pissed about it because I loved this product.

I love the minimalism of Jing, but I agree with previous commenters that the save-as-file function is maybe too minimally presented. Once you've shared a video, it's even harder to figure out how to also save it as a file. It took me awhile to realize that I had to double-click the image of the video in my Jing history in order to get the "File" option.

These are not my comments specifically but I agree absolutely with what has been said ........also it took me more than 2 minutes to upload a pic that could have neen saved in a split second to a file of my choice
Its not the system that I have been used to and I was hoping that I could have a choice

I must agree with most of the posts that are here! I'm an IT consultant with dozens of Fortune 500 customers and have told all that have asked how I created my screenshots so fast about your product! I have been using Jing since you first released it and thought on for the Mac it's a great product but with the new share to save feel it's a step backward. I have made saves to many, many different locations and now have to do extra steps every time to change the location. I also don't like being forced to signup for screencast.com as currently I don't see where I'll use it, so thanks for that one too.
Hope you address these issues as I've really loved your product but reiterating somethings are a step backward.

i've just installed the latest code and have a few problems - i agree with all that was said and the person who recommended this to me has decided to keep his previous version installed. My problem is the video can be viewed on screencast as an owner but when i attempt to share the file the people i send it to only get a blank screen. also when i try to save the file locally the swf file will not run when opened with IE 7 or firefox 20. It's weird because i can view the file from the history link???????? any ideas? - (yes my browser can run other .swf files fine - hosted or local)

I'd have to agree with many who dislike the new file save. I can see why you did it, but it's made my life complicated again. I work with many different departments and many different online courses, so when I record a quick 'how-to,' that really has to be saved with the particular course materials referenced, which means I need to give it a name that makes sense on its own as well as store the file with the materials. Thx to the new format, I guess I'd have to save it to a directory on my laptop, go find it, rename it, move it to the appropriate webdav directory and so forth. Gah! BRING BACK THE SIMPLE REGULAR OLD FILE SAVE. Pleeeeeeeease.

I lost two attempts at doing a video capture with the new version because I couldn't find an intuitive and obvious Save feature.
Luckily, I still had the .dmg of the previous version on my system, so I downgraded, and will happily stick with it, no matter how many times Jing yells at me that there's an important upgrade.
Also, sometimes, doing vid captures for tutorials of sites that contain a lot of Flash cause memory problems, to the point that I need to restart Firefox after exiting Jing. It doesn't happen all of the time, but when I notice a significant sluggishness in Firefox (Mac OS X 10.4.11), it's usually after having used Jing with one of those sites.

I have been trying for over an hour to get this thing to work according to your instructions and it keeps storing the information on the internet instead of on my computer.
This is what I put into the fields:
Target Directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\
URL Links:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\[filename]
The other page with instructions was very poorly written. I left a comment there also.
I give up. What is going wrong? The software tells me that the target directory is invalid sometimes. I'm using a Windows XP system.

It took me a couple of minutes, but I was able to figure out how to save to a local disk (in my case, the desktop). Though I can see how it'd be difficult for many to figure it out. But now that I know how to do it, I don't mind the method.
PS - I do like the ability to mark up a screen capture with text or a frame. Any chance that you could provide a choice of frames, such as a rectangle, circle, or diamond shape?

I'm finding the new way of *saving* is truly time consuming. I work on an iMac but my account resides on the server. So, to put a pathway into place is complicated and I will need to bug my administrator to get the full information. I mostly use the capture as I create self-help tipsheets. I am the only one working on them and would much prefer to just be able to save them to the desktop.
after 10 minute of frustration I still haven't gotten what I need!

I've posted once already asking for some assistance with this software. I filled out the information, waited and still haven't received a response. I've done everything just as you stated in the sample above and the software doesn't save to my hard drive. It continues to save to your system. I've worked with a lot of different software and was able to figure out some that was more complex than this one. This software doesn't save to the computer. Is anyone going to give a response. Since it won't save to my computer, I won't even bother trying to use the FTP function; that probably doesn't work right either.

Celes--Sorry, I thought I had answered your questions in your other comment but now realize I missed out on your big issue. The only reason Jing would share to the Internet (I assume you mean Screencast.com here) would be if the Screencast.com destination is selected. The rest of your options look like they're set up correctly.

Yes, I agree with the people posting. Its getting to be complicated. How does "share" or "embed" tell the user that the file is going locally?
I understnd the set up part, but there really should be an option for just "save." Based off of my 16 years of using software applications, my mind wants to use it like this. The workflow should be 1. Select the area to grab. 2. setup an auto save, where the user does nothing. Or have a button that says "save" and have a button that says "copy." 3. Done.

Thanks to Bill Scanlon for providing the link to this forum page referencing the updated "share" function. Though I too was surprised and frustrated by the "enhancement", I realize it was made in keeping with the intent of the Jing project. However, because much of what I capture is destined for internal and local use, I am apprehensive when selecting a function named "share". Perhaps simply renaming the "share" button to "put" would alleviate this anxiety and clarify the nature of the action. (Having selected "File" as a target, choosing to "share" seems inappropriate, where "put" seems appropriate in most situations IMHO.)
I continue to use and appreciate Jing and don't see this as a serious stumbling block. Keep up the good work.

This brings up the File settings dialog. Make any changes you'd like to your save location here.

I can't figure out how to save a file to my local computer.
Where is "Share with File"? The post at the top assumes that I know where this is. I have been trying for 1 hour last night, 2 hours at work today (reading all 125 FAQ), and an hour tonight trying to save the screen capture to my local computer. I read the first few posts here, and I still don't know how to save locally. I have been making screen captures for 2 years with various products such as Real, Camtasia and others. I am just very frustrated that I can't figure out how to save.
Can anyone tell the logical steps (without assuming I know anything) that can help me record and then save a file locally?

I am a complete virgin when it comes to screen capture. I have never used any other screen capture until now. Jing has taken my virginity. And it has worked without an issue. I even get how to save a file to my harddrive although I have not figured out how to give the file my own name. I have just used the default name given by Jing. Imagine that.
However, in reading all of the other posts about this save/share feature, perhaps a suggestion would be to change the name of the share button to "SEND". Maybe that would help with the confusion.
Essentially you ARE sending the file somewhere. Either to your hard drive with the "file" option selected above the share button (folder chosen with the More=>Preferences=>File option) or sending to clipboard, sending to screencast.com, FTP etc.
Sharing is somewhat confusing because of what we think of as sharing. Not all of us use Flickr. I don't. Not all of us want to "SEND" to another server (screencast). I don't. Sometimes we don't want to share. I was a screen capture virgin and I have no intention of sharing. But we do want to "SEND". It is just a matter of semantics. We know what "SEND" is and what it means. I guess because of email. We "SEND" email. We don't share email. When the screen capture is finished, we want to "SEND" it somewhere. Maybe that could help with the confusion.
And one more suggestion about the save file feature. I wish there was an easier option to choose WHERE (which folder) I want to "SEND" the file to when I have selected the "file" option above the "Share" button. And being able to name the file.
Under the current configuration, when I click "share" (there is that confusing word again) and assuming the "FILE" option above the share button is selected, it automatically is "SENT" to the folder that I specified in the More=> Preferences=> File option menu and with a name that I cannot choose initially. Unless I have just not found out how to do it yet.
But sometimes I don't want to "SEND" it to that folder. I may want to "SEND" it to another folder that relates to the capture file. (widget screen capture goes in the widget folder) In other words I want to be able to choose where it is "sent" on the fly and with the file name that I choose.
But as it is, after I have "SENT" the file to the chosen folder, I have to go back into my chosen Jing file catch folder, locate the file, (this can be very time consuming because I am not sure what name Jing has given it yet until I look in the folder), manually move the file to the appropriate folder and of coarse rename it to a more appropriate name. Many steps that could be eliminated by simply having a "SEND" button with an option to choose WHERE to "SEND"(ie. folder on hard drive, clipboard, screencast, email, Flickr, Northpole, etc) and with ability to choose file name.
Other than that, I love Jing. Jing was my first.
For what it's worth... But then what do I know, I am (was) just a virgin. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

Earlier I posted about the save/share confusion. But I would now like to update my post. I have now learned how to name my file. Great! Could not be easier. How did I not see that before. It is right there above the Screencast, Flickr, FTP, File options. But I still wish I could choose which folder I was sending it to just as easily. Instead of using the catchall capture folder.

Jing–
It's not what YOU feel that's important; it's your potential customers! Put the SAVE button back in and offer better audio now. I want to save easily to my desktop and NOT your server. You keep making excuses to all the comments from people wanting these simple things. Stop marketing from within and listen to your constituency!

I still have not worked out how to use the File button. I'm sorry, thumbs down for your work on updates. What you did ignores your customers and their need for a comfortable use of your service. I'm quite angry and hope you will turn back to the 'Save' button.

Hi,
Listen, all you are missing to bring this inline with other screenshot apps (at least on the mac) is to pick a save location for the user, rather than having them enter it in the first time. Then, just allow people to change it in the preferences.
And by the way, it's not very OS X - native looking. Can you have it show up as a real app, or a least have an option to have it display in the menu bar instead of your custom little yellow thing?
Thanks! Good work!

Most of all, I DON'T want to share my bling - locally, with friends or anyone for that matter. So, can the whole sharing thing be turned off? I mean, what good is bling if you have to share it?! Hi TOCS,
Jing only outputs to SWF. We've been getting quite a number of requests for additional output types, but I'm afraid at this time you might have to try something like: http://www.bytescout.com/swftovideo_convert_flash_to_avi.html
Keep in mind I've never tried any SWF --> other format products so I can't vouch for that link or any other product. Maybe some folks out there know a good solution for converting SWFs?
