Configuring FTP

Posted on Wednesday November 28, 2007 by Matt Dyer

In order to expand your sharing options, Jing has added support for FTP uploading. Using FTP is something of an advanced feature and it requires a bit of know-how. To upload to FTP with Jing, you need access to an FTP server with a Web accessible directory and the knowledge to write your own share and embed code.

You need to know the following information to configure FTP upload:

  • Server: This is the IP or DNS address of the server. Do not use "ftp://" before the adress.
  • Port: The port to use for the FTP connection.
  • Directory: The location or file path on your FTP server where Jing content is stored. This is relative to the user's root directory.
  • Username: Your username to log into the FTP server.
  • Password: Your password associated with the username.

With all this information, Jing can upload to your FTP server. Unfortunately, because of the wide variety of ways your FTP server might be configured, we can't generate the URL or embed code for you. This means you get to create your own. To make this easier, we've added tags that act as variables that you can stick in your own code. For more information on using these tags, check out this blog post.

For those wanting a quick and dirty example of how a URL or embed link might look, try adjusting this URL for your own use. In the Share field, replace the domain and directory with your choices while leaving the [filename] tag for Jing to replace automatically: http://www.yourDomain.com/yourDirectory/[filename]

Directory: The location or file path on your FTP server where Jing content is stored.

is this an absolute path or what?

I'm trying:

home/fradeyca/public_html/share

but I also tried just:

share

I would like more complete details in a FAQ about how to configure the whole ftp thing...the blog is pretty incomplete in helping me setup what should be a simple feature. I keep getting errors.

Ok I figured it out for those interested. You need to know what directory is the "root" for the ftp account that you are configuring this with.

In my case my ftp account settings looked like this:

server: ftp.fradeycat.com
directory: public_html/share
username: fradeyca@fradeycat.com
password: **********************

so since the ftp account "fradeyca@fradeycat.com" has root account access for my remotely hosted account, relative to that, I started at public_html

Would really like to see scp support to be embedded in Jing instead of just ftp. Don't want my password be transmitted to the server in clear text form. =)

Is there any way to use it with a .mac account? .Mac uses WebDAV.
If not can you implement this into Jing?

Anybody know how to set upthe Screencast.com FTP info. This is where jing used to put everything before the newer versions. So I have 5 files up there from before; now I can only export to a local dir, then upload. I can't find any ftp info at screencast.com. Then how do you figure out what the embeded share link template is going to be as they use a tiny_url like link http://www.screencast.com/t/D0TuTqI9nsG is an older share I made?

phil :

I guess screencast.com still works as it did, and FTP and File are completelty seperate setups.

The ftp support is REALLY insufficient. If a fairly knowledgeable ftp-er can't get it to upload in 5 minutes, it's not worth the effort. Using my standard screen capture technology and ftp is faster than your product.

Sad, as it was a clever idea.

was there any feedback/update on the use of a .mac account for file storage?

Does it support SFTP and port 22, can't seem to get it to connect?

I set up my FTP settings and tried to upload a video to my server, Jing says Capture Shared, but it doesn't give me the embed code and I can't find it on my server. It doesn't give me any ftp errors either...

I would like to set up so my picts and video go directly to google docs. Is there a way to do that?

I second the vote for sftp. Nobody should be transmitting plain text passwords over the internet as ftp does.

Also, it's a minor thing, but I think it would be easier, especially if someone was trying to copy and paste info, to have a field that allows a URL to configure (s)ftp. Something like

sftp://user:passwd@server.com/directory

Finally, when you implement sftp, make sure to use the builtin Mac OS X environment for ssh, so that it can use my private key and I don't have to use passwords at all.

I have set up an ftp site to which to save my jing videos, which works very well. I now want to revise the folder to which it saves, but cannot find how to change the info in my profile.

How can I fix the configuration of my videos. I'm trying to record a video off of the yahoo video page. It records, but the video quality is rather poor. It seems to skip and freeze along the way during my recording of the video. How can I fix that? Please help.

I followed the setting above it was working fine.
I then changed the seting to another domain exactly the same way but it keep giving me error 505, directory not found ( it's there ).

Now I changed the setting back to my first setting, but it doesn't work any more, keep receiving error" unable to recieve socket command"

Please help.

Thanks

Thank you for sharing your product. I would like to agree with some of the other users that you should support sftp, and potentially some sort of torrent support.
