What is Screencast.com?
Posted on Tuesday October 9, 2007 by Matt Dyer
Screencast.com is TechSmith's media hosting solution. Upload and share your videos and images as well as any other type of file you might want to share online. After setting up your Screencast.com account when Jing installs, Jing will automatically upload your image or video to Screencast.com whenever you click Share. The URL is copied to your Clipboard; paste it anywhere you want to share your image or video.
- Cost: Nothing. When you participate in the Jing Project, you'll receive a complimentary Screencast.com account for the duration of the project.
- Security: Screencast.com has both public and private sharing options. When using the Jing Project, your media is uploaded and and a randomized URL is generated. Only those who you share the URL with can view your media.
- Storage and Bandwidth: For helping us out and testing the Jing Project, you will receive 200 MB of storage and a monthly limit of 1 GB of transfer bandwidth for your Screencast.com account.

How do I turn off the log in for screencast? I just want Jing to start up (like the previous version) without a log on everytime. I'm happy to log onto screencast when I want to post a video - but I don't think it helps usabilty to force users to log on if they just want Jing to start up and sit there ....
Otherwise - love the product - keep it up!

I don't like to login with each start of the computer either. Please stop it or create something like a cookie to keep the login information! I like Jing and I use it very often

Hey folks, I think Jing is a great concept and I wish you well with it. But can you clarify here what you mean by "you'll receive a complimentary Screencast.com account for the duration of the project."
Here's my point: this page is linked to in the Jing setup page when people first install it, and some may not have seen too much other information on Jing when they install it.
Is "the project" referring to Jing itself? Or the project that one is creating? Folks inferring it to mean the latter could be very surprised if they expect their saved screencasts to last indefinitely, when (I think) you really mean something else.
Finally, to the folks commenting above, I think their needs are met by a blog entry of a couple days later, http://blog.jingproject.com/2007/10/asked_to_log_in_to_jing_everyt.html

Are you kidding me? I can't use the product without signing up for screencast? I'll find another program. I'd willingly pay to not have to put up with this lameness. Say goodbye to most of your users.

I have to agree with all the complaints. I downloaded the software and started it up only to be told I have to register for a service I will not use. Lame.

I thought your video indicated you could use your own server instead of Screencast. If that isn't true - I'm afraid I'll to go along with some of the other folks that brand your product (project) as LAME.

Wow are people on the internet really that dumb? It specifically states you can use ANY server to upload your stuff to, then one dumb person (dave) says something completely wrong and the rest of you believe HIM instead of the maker of the app? Why is that?
Hey everyone, the world is ending tomorrow, you dont need your money anymore, i will get rid of it for you if you send it to me.

OK Chris then why do we have to have a screencast.com account, which is not optional, if we are allowed to upload anywhere.

I don't want to upload videos at all. This is entirely for internal use. Why do I need an account, with an email address at all unless the intention is to spam me?

So, are you guys going to shed any light on this?
We really have to sign up with screencast.com to be able to use Jing at all?

Really disappointed that I _HAVE TO_ sign up for a web service when running the program when I have no intention of using that.
If I knew I probably wouldn't have bothered downloading...

Really annoying that you HAVE to sign up for an OPTIONAL web service to run the program. No way to skip it? Or register later after trying the program?
I just registered with "junk" information to get past the screen... And I'm not the first one as the two first usernames i tried (asdfg and asdfgh) were taken :P

I forgot my user id and password on the system.
How do I re-login into Jing?
Thanks for the help,

Mike--To reset your password, click the "Forgot your password?" link in the Screencast.com log in window. An email will be sent to the address you used to register your account with instructions. http://screencast.com/t/NitVT6J0Mbb

Hey everybody, let's move to Camstudio, completely free, no suscription service, and you may save your video to AVI os SWF:
http://camstudio.org/
I really wanted to try Jing, but when I got the suscription part of the installation I just clicked Quit.
Sidd, in Mexico.

Although it says you can use Jing with any host, you cannot actually start using Jing until you have created a Jing folder on Screencast.com, it is an enforced action during setup.
If you know of a why to bypass that stage of setup, please let us know.

For all of those who are cautious about starting a screencast account, I started one when I first downloaded Jing which was around the time that it got started. I have yet to receive an email from sreencast.com and I have never used screencast at all. I have loaded the files straight to my server. I'm sure they made it this way to simply give those who don't have a website or a server, another medium to be able to share their videos. I wish that it wasn't attached to screencast in this way but it is. I have an example of a video that I created and use on a site that got me 120 opt-ins in just the first 2 weeks. Here is the link:

I'm deeply disappointed that I'm told I have to register for a service that I don't plan on using. Sad indeed!
