Let’s Make Summing “Interesting”

Posted on Wednesday October 31, 2007 by Mike Curtis

Before I begin, in my last post I said I couldn’t find a Mac version. Well, thanks to Don Sherry (Mac Developer on the Jing Project), there IS one! It’s called SumFun, but it plays the same way, and I have links to both versions below.

That said, some folks here at TechSmith have been giving me a hard time about the Jing I posted explaining Summing in that I was looking for a place to put a “4” tile and couldn’t make a good move. Right in front of my face the whole time was a “0 + 0 + 4” combo on the left edge.

My wife, who is also addicted to Summing, and has given me the hardest time, said, and I quote, “Watching your video is painful because it’s RIGHT THERE and you even paused it!”

O.K. Let me first say it’s harder to play Summing when you are also trying to talk and explain. Second, if you think you can do better, let’s see it.

We’ll send a TechSmith T-shirt to the first person who posts a Jing showing a score lower than my score of 23. It can be done. How do I know? My all-time best is an 18. I just don’t have the screenshot to prove it. (Honest! It happened!)

Oh yes—two rules: TechSmith employees aren’t eligible. You all need to get back to work. Secondly, I’m wise to image editing tricks. I’ll be applying TechSmith’s top-secret, unreleased, patent-pending, anti-image-doctoring algorithm to your image. (In other words, we trust you.)

Let’s see what you’ve got.

Congratulations Janos! Not only did you beat my score, but you crushed it!

Since I was beaten so quickly I know many of you did not have a chance to give Summing a try. Let's go one more round and offer another shirt to the first person to beat Janos' score of 20!

Ugh. I have an 18 on my screen, downloaded jing and having trouble getting it to work. It stops working when I click the share or save button. Any advice?

Hi Sandra,
My hope is that it happened so fast it seemed like it didn't work when really it did. Here's a way to test: Open Word or a browser. When you capture the image and click Share, try pasting your clipboard into the URL or in the word-processor. Hopefully there will be a URL right to your capture.

...and if I'm wrong (which is probably the case), I just sent you a private email with some phone numbers. We'll resolve this, as this is pretty close to a Jing emergency!

Mike,
I wish Jing were working correctly so that I could show you what happens when Jing is working incorrectly - lol. Is there a tech lookup for issues like this?

As for my Summing score - I am about ready to printscreen my score and upload the screenshot :-). Kinda defeats the whole purpose though, doesn't it?

Hello,

Here's my 18 - http://screencast.com/t/bMgveudsnmT - got that score twice, and haven't been able to beat 20 since!

Good game - thanks for introducing it!

Keep up the good work,
Pat M.

Nice work Pat! Here's a Jing of Sandra's high score too: http://screencast.com/t/Vcpt6YZw

If anyone has another fun game that is on the Web or for Mac and PC feel free to post it here. I need something to play--I mean research--for the future!

Hi,
I didn't know that there are some people actually playing my summing game. Cool. :) You may want to correct the link to my site: Summing for windows

I'd be glad if you put a comment on my site.

BTW, my personal record is also 18 (with the Palmversion). It is possible.

Raphael, it's nice to "meet" the person behind Summing. I first learned about Summing at an education conference where some teachers were using it as an educational game for students.

I've spent many an hour staring at those numbered blocks. :) Thanks for sharing, and I updated the link.
