Jing for Windows - Version 1.3
Posted on Wednesday October 10, 2007 by Michael Malinak
We've been working hard to try and address some of the requests we've heard. You can download the new version of Jing here.
Here's what this build includes:- We've simplified the sign up process so that we don't interrupt when you're trying to capture and share. We now handle this when you first launch Jing.
- When selecting the area to capture, dimensions of the selected area now show up as a mouse tooltip.
- You can now get HTML embed code when sharing items so they can quickly be put in your blog or website.
- The history window now allows you to sort and filter your shares. You'll also get a small window with capture information when you mouse over the shares.
- Lots of image editing improvements:
- You can now resize and move drawing objects.
- Text boxes can now be re-edited.
- We've added a fresh new look for our callouts and arrows.
- Undo and Redo buttons (you can also use Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y if you like).
- Video recording improvements:
- Video recording now has a countdown to give you some breathing room before the recording starts.
- You can now restart your video recording if you make a mistake.
- We remember the state of the microphone so you don't have to keep muting it.

I installed the new version, but can't get past the registeration for a screencast account. I don't want or need it and I refuse to register. Guess I will have to revert back to the previous version.. the new version doesn't have much I can use anyway. The biggest thing I need is to be able to capture scrolling pages.

I stupidly registered and found that I still can not copy and paste the captured image without saving it to a file. Any suggestions for other softwares?

You are still able to use Jing without sharing to Screencast.com. The purpose of signing up for the Jing Folder on Screencast.com is to help streamline the process during share so that people would not have a jarring experience on first share. The current way that you are using Jing in your corporate environment is still possible and valid in the manner you were sharing before. Yes, you do need to create a Jing Folder on Screencast.com. No, you are not forced to share things up to Screencast.com for sharing (as I am assuming you share by copying the file into an email or something similar)
One of the things that we have found difficult in not having people register with Screencast.com is that we cannot understand how people are using Jing. Signing into Screencast.com gives us a better understanding of how many users (in aggregagate) we have, how much we are growing, and if we can take this project to the next level. While we do not track what you do with Jing, it is helpful for us to know if we have 11,000 users or 100,000 users of Jing.
Hope this helps explain things a little

I like JING a lot and hope that it remains FREE; it's been very helpful for our faculty who cannot affort Snagit or Camtasia. Thanks for the updates -- especially re-ediable text boxes...that was a big improvement.

I uninstalled and installed new version. I get:
Jing has encounted a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Close button.
I am not able to put any information in the sign in. I try and get this every time.
Thanks!

Jing is the greatest product in the world. I work at a college and support the faculty in their use of our Learning Management System. Jing has been help me not have to write long emails that faculty can not understand. I do a short video clip with the steps needed and they love it.
The new version is great. Lots of good new features. I would still like to be able to something like a screen draw in Camtasia in my Jing Movies...just asking.

I love Jing but this new version is sick. Jing asks me my login info each time i reboot. That's boring. I'm on Vista. Can you do something for this in your next version ?
Thank you and sorry for my bad english

Fry: Yes, there seems to be a bug because we aren't saving the settings if Jing doesn't exit correctly. A workaround for this is to click on the "More" option from the launcher and then click "Done" (the checkmark).
Sorry, we're looking at getting a fix out for this.

The embed code, when pasted in my blog places the video in the middle and distorts the whole blog by moving the side columns. I cannot see how to position it to the left.
I notice the embed code also allows 'full screen'. Why is that used when the embed code also shows the sizes.

I normally use snagit, but I found jing interesting... but I can not seem to find the area that lets you set the preference of saving the captured files in a certain dimension. For instance, all of my content pages on my website are 650 pixes wide, so obviously my images can be a mximum of 640 and I don;t want to have to go into firefox each time to adjust the image.
Am I missing something?

Hi Mark,
You're not missing anything. :) In SnagIt you can resize/scale images but all of Jing's captures are in the original size. So...I'm afraid if you want to shrink down images you'll have to modify them in an image editor or right in the html.
I hear what you're saying though and it's an intriguing idea!

Hi Vicky, Did you try quitting Jing completely? Click the More ball, then there should be a quit button on the far right. When you restart Jing, you'll likely be prompted for the update again, but hopefully this time it will install correctly. If you're still in an endless loop of updating, I'd contact http://support.techsmith.com and they should straighten it out.
