Jing for Mac - Version 1.3
Okay, lots of new stuff in our 1.3 release!
When capturing, we show selection dimensions, and now have a 3..2..1 countdown before video recording starts. We also tell you if the microphone is on or muted, and remember if you previously had it muted. And we let you Restart a video if you make a mistake while recording. We also think we fixed a bug with selecting the default sound input.
When editing an image capture, you'll notice new arrows and text boxes and new undo/redo buttons (command-z and command-shift-z still work too).
When sharing, we no longer interrupt your first share to sign you up for Screencast.com. Now we handle that when you first launch Jing. We also improved support for authenticating proxies.
It's now much easier to get the html code for embedding shared items in your blog or website by using a new menu on the Share button, and improvements to Screencast.com like Click To Play make your pages load much faster!
The History window now allows sorting and filtering to help you find old items quicker, and when the mouse lingers over a thumbnail for a second, a new little window appears to show more information about that item. Also, we show each item's name and size below its thumbnail.
The Screencast.com team made a little video showing their newest features, including Click To Play

Congrats - By forcing me to sign up for and use Screencast.com as a condition of using Jing, you've lost me. I can't use your product in a corporate setting (no matter how secure Screencast.com may claim to be) and share content outside the firewall. And there's no way to bypass Screencast.com to use the product.
I thought that this position (echoed by many others on this blog in comments) was "listened to" and addressed. Surely Screencast.com won't supplant YouTube, personal blogs, and the myriad of other, existing, more robust and more useful places Jing content should have ended up.
Bad move.
You are still able to use Jing without sharing to Screencast.com. The purpose of signing up for the Jing Folder on Screencast.com is to help streamline the process during share so that people would not have a jarring experience on first share. The current way that you are using Jing in your corporate environment is still possible and valid in the manner you were sharing before. Yes, you do need to create a Jing Folder on Screencast.com. No, you are not forced to share things up to Screencast.com for sharing (as I am assuming you share by copying the file into an email or something similar)
Okay Robert, so we don't have to use Screencast.com in order to use Jing. That much is understood. I still fail to grasp why Jing requires mandatory Screencast.com registration. If "Ease of Use" is a factor here, why isn't there an "easy" way to opt out of this, then? I can completely respect that TechSmith wants more Screencast.com members, but requiring this first step in order to even use Jing is rather un-friendly.
Technical note: Jing 1.3.2840M (Mac version) just idles in the background if the "Jing Setup" window somehow disappears. This seemed to occur when, upon clicking the information links, a Safari window obscured the Jing Setup window.
Some nice remarks about Jing at the MacUpdate page for Jing:

I appreciate your response. One of the things that we have found difficult in not having people register with Screencast.com is that we cannot understand how people are using Jing. Signing into Screencast.com gives us a better understanding of how many users (in aggregagate) we have, how much we are growing, and if we can take this project to the next level. While we do not track what you do with Jing, it is helpful for us to know if we have 11,000 users or 100,000 users of Jing.
I hope that helps some.
Thanks
Yep add me to the chorus. I'll pay for Jing outright if you add a pref to let me designate where I want the vids to be automatically uploaded to (e.g. .mac, or sftp). I won't pay an annual screencast sub if you go that way.
Also, your windows don't play well with expose and the menubar - if they are hidden by another app window then expose will not reveal the Jing window. Minimisnig the other app window will reveal the Jing window.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for fixing that bug. Now I can use Jing with no problem. *thumbs up*
Hi, thank for this great solution!
I have a problem on the Mac Version of Jing:
- The video capture shows only a black rectangle when I try to capture a video.
I have a Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics) 450 MHz
Maybe this is a incompatibility with my (old) graphic card? It's a ATY,Rage128Pro
Can you confirm this? Thank you.
Is there a work around?
cheers
pedro
Hmmm...I just downloaded the update and now I am not able to use Jing. When trying the video capture, I get the Mic countdown and then a Jing Warning that an error occurred while recording: AudioDeviceOpenFailed. I click OK and then Jing closes.
Any suggestions?
Hey, your mac OSX link is pushing down Hexedit for mac? as of 6:20 AM est.
I would like to see a Linux version as well.
I have used Camtsais Studio for several years now, and I absolutely love that piece of software (Screencast too)! This is a perfect marriage of the two technologies! Simple, easy to use, unobtrusive, and very effective. I would definitely recommend purchasing this software as soon as it becomes available.
It would be nice to have two separate purchasing options, though. One fee for standalone usage (ftp to your server of choice) or free with Screencast.com signup. I'd probably just go with the latter and purchase 10GB of space for my department. That way we could easily track the kinds of help desk requests we are getting and how much time we are spending to help our users. There are many uses beyond just sending out video :)
hi-
I'm trying to create a tutorial video using jing - I'm on a mac.
Where is th elink being pasted to? Is it a clipboard in Screencast? I can't seem to find a "clipboard" on my mac.
thank you!
Hi,
It says the mic is on when i go to capture, although I am not getting the audio playback when previewing my captured video...
