Report Card: Does Jing Make The Grade?
Posted on Wednesday September 5, 2007 by Tony Dunckel
The Jing Project has been live for over 45 days now (woohoo!) and we are very excited to see what you think of it.
One of the big reasons for running the Jing Project publicly was to assess how useful Jing would become at improving daily conversations in the "real world". By completing this short 9 question survey, you can help do just that.
Click Here to take surveyThanks for your participation and keep on Jinging :-)

Nice product, need to add video editing (very light), and some audio controls, also very light.
I recorded 10 demos narrated for a new product launch in under 2 hours. That's all the starts, stops and screw ups (pros may call them takes).
I also extremely love the mac and pc versatility as well as the simplified file format.(swf, png) I would like the choice though to automatically or manually push files up to a hosted site of my choosing, say a delivery to multiple hosted sites at once. flikr, youtube, screencast and my company intranet to service my whole population of users at once.
Seriously, you guys are doing a great job and if you decided to do nothing more than price the product you'd be successful. Best of luck with it.

Has anyone else had trouble downloading Jing?
I am unable to download Microsoft.NET framework 3.0
Once i figure that out I am looking forward to Jing.
Wouldn't it me great to right click, copy and paste into an e-mail like SnagIt?

On the Microsoft Website, you should be able to download the .Net 3.0 Redistributable. The URL is:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=10CC340B-F857-4A14-83F5-25634C3BF043&displaylang=en
And a Jing of the page

Hope that helps

I teach math using a tablet PC and digital projector. I used Jing to record a lesson on the Law of Cosines (precalculus concept) - it ran over 5 minutes, so I had to split it into two videos, which is not a big deal. As far as saving the url - I see myself making LOTS of lessons with Jing, so I'm concerned about being able to save them on my laptop in a viewable format and upload them to my own website if storage becomes an issue with you guys. I'm not all that tech-savvy when it comes to things like .swf, .png - how do I save it so I (and my students) can play it with Windows Media Player or iTunes?

Steve,
You really need to look at Camtasia Studio, another fine product that TechSmith creates. You can create 1 file as there's no 5 minute limit on it, plus you'll be able to produce to multiple formats, like swf, flv, wmv (windows media), mov (quicktime), straight to the iPod/iTunes format and more. Check it out here: www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp.

Well I've only just began with your product, Its quite an innovative peice of kit :)
I can honestly see us using it for all of our product demos in the future.
(Can't wait to show off our work as well!)
As a side note I just read your autoresponder and find that you're located in our backyard... great to see such useful technology being developed here in MI (I've always been told all the talent moves out west, way to prove them wrong!)

I just downloaded and tried your capture product and it looks like the one program I have been looking for. I wasn't able to run tour video and wondered where the "simple object remover" comes in or how it works. That would really be a help in my own project. Any chance of a quick response as to how I can use this feature. Thanks so much for your time.

Hey Paul, fellow Michigander, thanks for the kind words. Yep, being located in the Great Lakes state is actually a pretty nice gig. With Micighan State University literally a couple miles away, we've pretty lucky when it comes to getting some great talent.
If you're ever in our neck of the woods, please stop on in and I'll give you the nickel tour.

I just got a Nvidia e-GEForce 7300GT video card (512 mbs video memory) and I probably made about 10 quick short videos today in Jing which has helped immensely. Jing definitely makes the grade.

This is a great product, well done guys, i do have a niuggel though, the first time you use jing after turning on the PC is painfully slow to initialise adn the delays are enough to not bother using it, after the first image is fine though.
Also I these are essential improvement neede dto make jing fantastic and would be useful to anyone...
1.Editable text after deactivating the text box,
2. An undo button for the tools i.e. text, border, arrow .etc,
3. an option to choose what type of link gets copied to the clipboard, i.e. image hotlink address, file address, bbcode tag, html tag (this would be set up in advance and used from then on.

Great product! Needed something for the Mac and this might do the trick. I do need some basic video/audio editing though...mainly cutting out parts or turning off sound altogether.

Great idea - we are a home based business with PC's in 2 rooms - so we spend a lot of time walking backwards and forwards :-(
I did get an error message when trying to look at history but today I haven't. If it comes up again - will send it in.
Thanks

I love it. Now can we have the editing capability from Camtasia for the Mac. Pretty please!
- I do not want to buy Windows versions of software I already have in my Mac. Please Have us be able to edit.
Thank you kindly.

I use Jing on a daily basis. But I only have one complaint, and that is that it takes over 100mb of ram when the program is idling. This is very annoying, restarting the program brings down the ram usage alot.
Other than that, I love it. No longer do I have to take a screenshot and size it down in paint. I just pick my place and click save!

Also, it would be awesome if webmaster could use an ftp account as a feature to allow us to choose where we want to upload our files!

The product (well screencast) is useless as a freeware video sharing solution. Why? Because I ran into the 200mb upload limit on screencast wih my very first attempt; which was only a 2 minute wedding video taken with a Canon digital camera.

Overall - I love it! I've found myself using it a lot to do seemingly simple things by e-mail and chat that I could only describe before. Now I can Jing it and voila - the party on the other end understands exactly what I'm trying to explain to them! A picture (or a video) IS worth a thousand words. Which is exactly what Jing was meant to do.
The only issue I have currently is that I am constantly getting an annoying message telling me that "Jing is up to date." Great! Except I didn't ask. I would rather it only tell me when Jing is NOT up to date, rather than repeatedly tell me that it's just fine. Please please fix this. ;)

I have downloaded this and it works great but apparently i have been trying to share the wrong way. I have been creating a file and then sending file. I have now discovered that i can open it on my URL and then forward the page to someone else. Is that the recommended way.
Thanks.

Jing is a great product. I downloaded it and started cranking out screencasts immediately. I understand your choice of .swf for simplicity.
Having said that, I personally would like the ability to edit after capture. But if you made Camtasia for the Mac that would meet that need. (Any chance of that??)
Overall a very cool product. You make us Michiganders proud, I'm down in Manchester. Keep up the good work!!

I tried recording it, but the video comes out blank (white screen). I have selected the area of the screen correctly but no luck. When I open the recorded video's I can see the thumbnail images but when play the recorded video's I still don't see anything. Can anyone help me? I am using a Mac mini 1.42 PPC, Mac OS 10.4.10.

When testing our software I use the video functionality to report the problems I come across. No more misunderstanding of what I did when the problem occurred. The programmers can see what I did. I gain a lot of time no longer having to describe the problem.

I appreciate Jing. It's a simple program and the result is a video with beautiful control elements.
Although I have a few suggestions: first is the option to scale the video down to 50%, 25% and so on. Second woult be a timer so that the recording starts with one or two seconds delay. My third wish would be the option to blank out both the mouse and the control elements in case that they extend into the recorded section.
