Welcome to the Jing Project

Posted on Friday July 13, 2007 by Tony Dunckel

Tony Dunckel

Greetings friends, family, colleagues, customers, and newcomers too - welcome everyone. I’m Tony Dunckel, and it is my pleasure as the product (err, project) manager to bring you Jing.

The Jing Project is our journey to discover how we can improve everyday conversation. Think of all those IM chats, emails, blog posts and comments you’ve made over the years. Now imagine a more visual world where integrating screen captures and screencasts into those took nothing more than a matter of seconds. Can you imagine it? I can - I’ve seen it, I’ve lived it - it’s Jing.

Our goal is to explore this with all of you and together see how we can bridge the visual world and our daily conversations into a richer, more effective way to communicate.

Before we embark on our journey, I’d like to introduce a few of my comrades, who represent the real genius behind the Jing Project and who will be contributing to our discussion on this blog.

Michael Malinak

“I'm Michael, the Lead Developer for Jing. I worked on the Windows development side of Jing and the original (constantly changing) project concept. If you’re upset about the system requirements... it's my fault.”
-- Michael Malinak

Chris McQueen

“Well, I'm Chris, and I work with the Instructional Design team at TechSmith. I didn't work on the development of Jing, but I got to tag-a-long for the ride, which has been a lot of fun. Oh, and I made the intro video too.”
--Chris McQueen

Alan Dennis

“Hello people of the interwebs! My name is Alan. I am the interface designer for the Jing Project. I absolutely love Jing, and I'm extremely excited to see where you, our users, will help us take this project!"
-- Alan Dennis

Don Sherry

“I'm Don, and I made the sun shine on the Mac version, and some other stuff. We used Jing a lot during its development, and we think you'll find it useful, too.”
-- Don Sherry

Nick Gorsline

“Hi, I'm Nick. I did the Jing Project's page, blog, and other webbie things. I also helped out with the Mac interface. We hope you have just as much fun using it as we had making it.”
-- Nick Gorsline

Matt Dyer

“Matt Dyer is a user assistance developer who enjoys writing about himself in the third person. He does his best to make sure that you know all the cool stuff you can do with Jing.”
-- Matt Dyer

Betsy Weber

“Hi, I'm Betsy, the Chief Evangelist at TechSmith. I can't wait to see all of the wicked cool things you do with Jing! Feel free to contact me so I can show off your masterpiece here on the blog!”
-- Betsy Weber, visit my blog

And with that, we invite you to not just use Jing, but to live it and incorporate it into your daily conversations. This blog is all about your feedback and creating an open dialog about where we should take this concept. Have fun!

Very cool! A quick note about the Mac client: When I ran it for the first time Growl gave me the notification that Jing was registered, but then nothing happened. Activity Monitor showed Jing was running but was experiencing some type of memory leak. It got up to 200+ MB of memory consumption before I killed it (activity monitor did flag it as a unresponsive app while mem usage continued to climb).

Second run went perfectly and I'm playing with the app now. Whoever does your mac programming is good at their job! Seriously, no sarcasm intended, I love the interface.

Just downloaded & am getting ready to install Jing. Before even looking at Jing I want to make some comments on the madium based on the published description of the application.

First some background. I am an expert in 'Live Distance Learning'. I spend more time in the live virtual environment than should be allowed. That said, I am a huge proponent of the visual nature of the virtual medium. Visual in terms of managing the environment and in terms of presenting content.
Obviously my interest is piqued when reading about Jing.

Second piece of background information. Usually what comes in the back of the head, typically goes straight out the mouth.

So without even looking I venture this comment based on other communication applications and mediums. As a culture, multi-tasking is passe. We now multi-communicate. We text while speaking over the internet. Share files, share desktops, share videos, etc.

Multi-Communicating. Cool Beans... Jing!

I just installed Jing onto this computer running Windows XP Pro (SP2 and automated updates).

It generated an error report immediately after install. The only tweak i made eas to remove tick next to "start Jing when computer starts".

I'll try a reboot and se if that helps at all.

Love the concept, you guys! Also as a PC for Business, Mac for Home User, I love that you have both interfaces. My installation went incredibly smoothly. Great interface. Also, great intro capture that you guys did! Really well done! Love the innovation!

As a power user of SnagIt an Camtasia, I have come to expect great things from TechSmith but have become timid after reading posts of some of the problems reported.

Quote floater

I just downloaded and installed Jing on my intel MacBook Pro. Great stuff. The Mac is my preference and I only use the PC when required. The most often used applications I used on the PC were Camtasia Studio and Snagit. Please tell me that this great news of Jing being available on the Mac is an indication that TechSmith will also be developing Snagit and Camtasia for the Mac. There is NOTHING like those two apps for the Mac.

Hello- I downloaded and installed the software on my VISTA computer. The installation took place in the backgound and I forgot about the software until I noticed the sunburst at the top of my screen. I did a quick explore and was pleasantly surprised. I made a mini video -wish I had used my microphone and added audio (next time)-- the finished product was clean and clear, the process was so quick and 'fun.' I can see this software serving as an off-site training tool for spontantous support. Can you save the file for future reference or is there a time limit on the share option? To quote one of my kidlets, "Kewl!"

Not sure I get it; if I am IM'ng a friend, why do I want to bother uploading to Screencast.com, why can't I just save an image or short video file and send it via IM file transfer? Isn't that (SnagIt) simpler? If I want multiple users to see it, then it makes sense. So, why not add an direct IM output capability to Jing, or better yet, add a Screencast output capability to SnagIt???

I used it to create and send (via email) a link to my video on screencast. It worked fine. It is very important that tools of this nature work quick and easy and it did so. I am a bit concerned over how big a file screencast will allow and how long before they dump it. If I were to create videos of value iI would want to save them or have them on my own site. Keep up the good work on your valuable software (snagit, camtasia)

Quote floater

For those of us who are loyal SnagIt and Camtasia Studio customers, could you tell us how this is different? I love that it's available for the Mac, but it seems to be similar to both of them, no?

I'm surprised that you don't have that as your first FAQ!

Brian McCarthy :

Great job, Techsmith. The installation was simple and fast. I created my first Jing screencast in just a couple of minutes. I see excellent potential for this very cool little application.

What's the difference between Camtasia and Jing? Simply put, it's speed and simplicity. Jing is right there in your application tray or hovering at the top of your screen. Just launch it, create your screencast, and email or post it. No file creation, no big choices to make, no complex uploading. Just click and communicate.

Quote floater

I'm downloading this now and can't wait to check it out. Sounds like a very interesting idea.

Quote floater

Jing is very cool! We already use Morae, Camtasia and Snagit. Jing is quick, simple, fast, intuitive and uses relatively little memory. It's really a brilliant idea.

I don't think we'll use Jing to replace Camtasia but I think it will be a useful tool alongside both Camtasia and Snagit. I'm sure we'll keep Snagit because it's so great for super-fast image grabs, and also for capturing TEXT. Camtasia I'm sure we'll keep using for "higher-end" screen presentations. Jing fits right in between the two.

Personally, I must be candid and say I'm really thrilled, and have not felt like this about software in years, truly years.

Ola :

How would I used Jing? I would mainly use Jing-recorder for personal purpose (teaching). Record a video and save it in my web based storage place, which is free.

Why would I use Jing-recorder rather than a portable freeware such as CamStudio, or Wink or any other offered trialware such as BB Flashback or Instant Demo?
I would use Jing if it is a freeware and if it's functionality is up to par with the other freewares.

I would take for granted that Jing-recorder would have a superior sound quality and file size since it's Camtasia-based and that the output format would be swf. Already it seams to be more convenient (faster and easier) than the others. But I miss the editing and text box. Voice is good but mostly I find it's easier to describe things with just text boxes. So there is only two things left (text box and editing), then I will change to Jing and start to recommend Jing.

Btw Betsy, I liked the ZoomIt tool.

Well what a useless piece of software.

Firstly it doesn't install properly as others have bothered to mention.

Secondly a quick review of freeware will give you better options.

TechSmith you should do your own development work before using the public!! the operative word is USING.

We have unsubscribed from your newsletters as your credability is now very questionable!

I just downloaded and installed Jing! This definitely looks cool and I can already see a ton of uses for it. I am an active SnagIt and Camtasia user and think Jing will be the perfect compliment in the product family. There are many times in my job (as SAP consultant)or in my volunteer work that having the ability to quickly capture the screen and share it (via IM or email is essential. Often something informal and quick is needed that doesn't require extensive editing and Jing now makes that so much easier. Thanks guys! I'm definitely looking forward to using this and seeing how it develops.

Hey,

I just uploaded a 13.6 MB swf video to Screencast.com and received the clipboard url from Jing, but when you navigate to the url the video isn't there. I logged in to SC.com to check out what was going on noticed that the infamous "adding to set" message was shown next to that piece of media.

When you view source you see this nice set of empty embed code:

http://www.screencast.com/t/mIjBZKA5C8

Seems like something is wrong if I'm getting an url to media that hasn't been added the set yet. The view page should also probably display some sort of informational message rather than just failing silently with empty embed tags.

Hi,

Not very happy at the moment. I've just installed Jing but when I try to run it I keep getting an error message and the program closes. I'm clearly not the only one experiencing this so I hope you come up with a fix really soon. I've rebooted without results.

I'm using a XP system. The error signature is:

EventType : clr20r3 P1 : jing.exe P2 : 1.2.3.0 P3 : 469c62c9
P4 : mscorlib P5 : 2.0.0.0 P6 : 461eee3d P7 : 233c P8 : 23
P9 : system.formatexception

Hi,

Regarding the error some of us are getting when trying to run Jing. It looks like it has something do to with the language settings. When I change my settings (in the Control Panel) from Icelandic to English (United States) the Jing will run just fine. Perhaps other users with this problem could verify this solution?

I hope this will help you to fix this problem (soon please).

Hi,

Final call on this error thing. I've been experimenting more and narrowed it down to the date format. You must use the US date format (m.d.yyyy) for Jing to work.

Having used image capture for a bit, here are a few suggestions for the editing feature:

  • a simple history browser, so you don't have to undo everything if you want to change something done early on
  • font options -- keep last settings. currently defaults to 18pt arial...have to keep changing every time

I know you just released this, and the feature requests will be pouring in, but just thought I should give my $0.02. Great product, once again!

Jing is an incredible program. I have recorded basic video and screenshots perfectly. Once this is fully developed it will be a great product. I am not a huge fan of having to sign up to third parties and possibly paying for that as well as this product. So hosting on one's own server would be beneficial. All in all this is amazing and I plan on using the hell out of it for the trial period!

So far I really like the Jing concept. Well done! I'm used to using SnagIt and Camtasia which are first-class programs. Jing downloaded and installed without a hitch. It's easy to learn and a snap to use...kind of a "lite" combination of your two "best sellers"!

One suggestion would be to emulate SnagIt's text editor when using white text. In SnagIt the background turns grey which allows you to see the white text. In Jing the background stays white making it invisible. Here is a Jing example:

I like the program. I usually use grab for this, but lately it just hasn't been doing it for me. Plus, with the added features, Jing does a great job. Always nice to see something fresh (and free).
One quick thing though.. On Firefox, running OS X, the download links are red placed on a red background. You should change the link text to yellow or something so that anal people like myself can find it a bit easier.
Nonetheless... great work!

EDIT: After going back and doing a quick refresh, the background changed to white. Must have been something on my end. :P

Can capture images and video from each monitors individually as well as across both monitors at the same time. Needs audio capture. Image capture needs to support output of jpg as well as others, but png is a good start. This product is excellent for sharing CAD info.

Currently using a combination of SnagIt and Camtasia Studio to assist with development and testing of some web based apps. Both SnagIt and Camtasia Studio are great, however they do take a little time to capture / annotate / create / produce / etc. Jing solves this problem as it is so quick, and is the perfect companion for the work I am doing. The other guys in the team are also now using it !

It would be nice to see some edit tools (text box / arrow / highlighter) added to Video capture.

Great job !

Any thoughts of allowing posting to youtube or someplace like that as well?

I'm a Graphics instructor in South Dakota. I can already see lots of possibilities for this method of sharing and displaying visuals.

I intend to get my students involved when fall semester starts up. Can you see it? Scenario: student has problem at home with software assignment/homework; e-mails me with link to screen capture; I can respond or chat back with specific suggestions. Or this: we are all snowed in mid-winter, but we can still have class discussion, looking at each other's work online.

I'm wondering if the capture works as well within applications with open dialog boxes? I'll be testing this next.

Since I spend most of my time on a Mac, this will be great. Other options are limited to PC use. I would really like his function on my tablet PC, as well...

What a clean, simple, friendly user interface on Mac! I can see teachers using this with younger children in classrooms-at-a-distance, as well.

Thanks!

I'm ecstatic! Jing is so cool! I just downloaded it this morning and was trying to find time to read the Help and try it out. I didn't have a chance to read the Help, when a tech support issue arose. I jumped in and wasn't disappointed! The program is very intuitive and easy to use. I captured a couple of video demonstrations, activated a Screencast account and sent the demos out in minutes! Awesome!

Then I returned to explore how I could keep the demos on my HD and what the file sizes were. I discovered that information quickly by clicking the Save folder. Amazing! I've got it all!

Thanks Techsmith!

Gang,

Couple of comments...

1. I just posted a video screen capture and it was about 15 seconds. I don't know if was the size or what but some kind of progress bar, (ew, I know), would be helpful after you hit stop and it is compiling it.

2. As above, upon clicking 'Share' there is no helpful way of knowing anything is happening... except the barely perceptable revolving arrow thing and a understated dialogue box that fades on to say the url has been placed in your clipboard. Even a dialogue that says, 'Hang on while we upload this and create a URL for your screen cast' would be a help.

3. If I'm merrily off doing other tasks on my computer while waiting for Jing to compile and publish my screen cast what happens if I use the clipboard and accidently copy over the link before I retrieve it? Can I see it elsewhere? (I haven't investigated this but it might be a good idea to have a way to retrieve the associated URL in the history file for any given upload.)

4. Security. How secure is the screen cast server? i.e. What protection is in place to ensure screen casts are not seen/used/downloaded by those who are unauthorized?

5. How long are screen casts left on the server?

6. There seems to be a long delay, (I gave up), in waiting for confirmation that screen casts are deleted from my history file... why?

Still love it and will keep using!

Cheers,
Phil

I just downloaded and ran Jing without a hitch. It runs beautifully and has a lot of promise, and being a Skitch user, I can safely say I'll have a lot of uses for this. Up until now, I've only been using Skitch for my Mac (as it's only available for Mac at present), but recently I've been using a Vista and have been waiting patiently for the Windows release. It's nice to have a decent substitute!

The only problem I have, is viewing work on the Screencast.com website, as each page seems to take ages to load. This might be my problem as I've only tried it once, but nevertheless I thought I'd mention it.

But, nice work...!

I've been using Jing to help our students with questions they have about our online learning management system, how to find something on our web, how to do something in terms of administrative tasks etc. It's a great tool. John,

Thanks for sharing your install experience with us. Requiring .Net 3.0 was a design decision we took early on to help us take advantage of a common user interface between Mac and Windows users. We felt keeping parity between the applications as much as possible was important. It also allows us to develop and iterate new versions much faster.

Of course, acceptance of .Net 3.0 is something we wanted to gauge as we rolled this out. Based on significant feedback about it, we are trying to understand if there is a better way to get this installed on user's machines in a much clearer and concise manner. Any suggestions you have on this topic would be well received.

Also, as to your email address, if you'd like to send me an email at t[dot]dunckel[at]techsmith[dot]com, I'd like to do some testing with your email construct to see if we do in fact have a bug with our feedback form.

Thanks so much,

Rex Boggs :

From a maths teacher's perspective, I think Jing will have a major impact on how I teach mathematics. Here is a post I sent to a number of maths discussion lists (after using it for less than a day):

**

I have recently come across a most amazing program called Jing, which has a real potential for
enhancing how I teach mathematics using an interactive whiteboard (or even just a data projector and computer).

Jing is a free program that lets me record my screen actions, which are then output as a flash
program. I can record the entire screen or a selected portion.

Once I have stopped recording, I can save the flash file and/or upload it (for free) to the web. The web address is saved to my clipboard, so I can share its location via email or a forum with my
students and/or colleagues..

Here is the web address of a recent (1 hour ago) screen recording of me using the SmartView
software to solve a quadratic equation graphically:

http://screencast.com/t/618IpF4sJDW

What a great way to teach the students how to use a graphics calculator! And the students will have
access to a permanent record of how to do this. And I can literally do this is just a few minutes.
I can even do it in front of a live audience (ie my class) and save it on the spot to the web for
later viewing.

I also embedded the flash file into an ActivStudio flipchart, with plenty of space on the IWB page
for annotations. So now I can stop the movie to discuss what we have seen, replay a section if
necessary and annotate
either alongside or over the flash file.

I have been using Jing for less than a day, but can think of a myriad (or even a gigiad) of ways I
might use it.

**

As a service to the community, you very smart folks that created Jing will of course make it free for educational use!? The potential for education is enormous, but as the cost goes up, the access and usage goes down. So please ...

Cheers

Great idea. I wish I could host my own Jing media though. Or be an authorized Jing host. Although your pricing is a good deal, it's always best to have options for hosting - such as hosting on your own dedicated server.

Hi, sometimes, it's impossible to upload. Size limit ? It's very useful product for my short video captures.
Thanks

Quote floater
Tony Dunckel :

As for uploading, the only limit that exists relates to your total alloted storage space (in the case of the free Jing account, that is 200MB). This amount represents the total space for all media in your Jing Folder.

As for bandwidth, we do not count the bandwidth used for uploading media against your monthly limit of 1GB, so that shouldn't be a problem.

To help us out, the next time you run into this problem, if you could submit and error through the product feedback form, we could look at the specific issue and try to identify what problem you may be experiencing.

I'm a new user. Wish I had JING 15 years ago, when I was in IT support!

My question: When I save my video to the screencast.com site, how long does it remain there? How can I manage my saved stuff at that site?

I dunno :

I much enjoyed being able to record what happened on the computer screen. Unfortunately, it does tend to lag when another process such as a video or game occurs at the same time and the few slides or shots which were taken as a result compiled it into an extremely fast take of the actual recording. Since then, I've just used it for recording stuff that didn't require such high processing from the CPU. I also realised that using this program called Audacity, (version 1.3 beta) i was able to change where I wanted to record the sound from. So in fact, I can actually record the same sound that comes out of the speaker, or switch it to the microphone, or some audio from a CD. That was a joy when I found out this option, and hopefully others can make use of that as well.

ElderOp :

I don't like the idea of being forced to register with ScreenCast.com in order to be able to use the new version of Jing. The only reason I can see for this is that, as has been said before, the service may start charging for it soon. If this is the case, I would prefer to pay a reasonable price for jing itself, as I don't want or need to upload saved captures. Unless this changes, I will have to revert to the previous version of Jing and stay there.
I have other capture programs that do more than Jing... scrolling window captures, avi video etc.. but not the annotation, which is the main thing I like in Jing. Sure hope You will rethink this.

I agree with above. It can get annoying having to get a window to sign in just the get it started even though i might not be using it today. Maybe somehow keep it permanently signed in? Or automatically signed in. Much appreciated.

Greetings,

WOW - Jink is INCREDIBLE!!!

I have 3 questions;

1. How much does this cost?
2. How LONG can a video capture be. I'd like to do a 30-60 web presentation for my team to teach them how to use the system.

3. CAN I share AUDIO files somehow? Conference call recordings. Does anyone know of an easy and affordable way to be albe to post or email hour long conference calls?

I've been researching for MONTHS and this could be what I've been looking for.

THANK YOU,
D'vorah in CT

On my first Jing day I found out several things the hard way:

For installation on Windows XP Pro with Microsoft OneCare Live installed you must first set OneCare antivirus off and firewall off before Jing installation. Remember to restore these settings after Jing installation.

Jing crashes Worden Blocks, stops the real time stock data transfer, and disconnects you from the Blocks server. This must be a bug.

Jing changes your screen resolution from 1024 by 768 down to 800 by 600 without asking. This must be also a bug.

Sounds like a great idea this Jing but my problem is that it seems to be only for XP and Vista....which I will not start on what I think of those OS's. Anyway is there a possiblity that you all might backup and write Jing for Win 2000. I have thought about going to Mac OS but the software isn't there for all my needs or wants... I know, learn to live with it... Oh yeah if you couldn't tell from the "You all!" I am an old southern boy so type your reply slow so I can understand it...LoL..just kidding and I really do think the Jing idea is great even if I don't get to try it for now...Anytime you can make communications more clear for one another it is a big jump forward for all of us....(especially for us men we love pictures) :-}
Thanks for taking the time to read this plea from an old die-hard Win 2000 user...

What a fantastic product!!! - while I have only used the screen capture, it has been a huge help communicating with the company who is building my website and are on the otherside of the world to me.

I had it installed (including the NET framework) had finished my first document and uploaded it all in an hour!!! My coder was so grateful and I have sent him the link to Jing... a HUGE thank you to hours of miscommunication solved!

My one question is - I have been trying to capture web page shots but can't seem to grab the complete page? It cuts off the right side - unfortunately the side I want so have taken a traditonal screen shot and used jing with that - is there an easier way?

All the best and thanks again

As a long-time user of TechSmith programs, I want to thank TS for being so responsive to its customers and for having wonderful tech support. I've found SnagIt to be an essential tool and use it regularly.

But, I don't see what makes Jing different. Would I use it instead of SnagIt and/or Camtasia?

I agree with the comment about having text as well as the video introduction. I prefer text. TS offered a link for text only in a reply post. If you follow it, it leads to a preliminary paragraph which leads to the same video.

I been using Jing very successfully simply clicking "share" and bingo it was on the Screencast site. Now I have to set up various options but I don't know how to choose between them when it comes to uploading. Even the Screencast upload doesn't work. I just get a "WrappedFTP reply exception". Keep it simple people, or you'll loose your fans.

Hi.. kudo's on a great product! Have tried various attempts by other web 2.0 efforts to stream quick stock market comments to our members; but this for sure blows-away others given platform neutrality (as so many have MAC's these days). After 2 years of posting .wmv videos to members, or small-screen types of Flash, this is far advanced:

suggestions: 1) video volume adjustment independent of one's PC; 2) allow longer recording time for a fee; 3) storage space seems to top-out far sooner than provided during 'project' (beta); 4) keep it as simple as it is; with some slight enhancements.

again blows away everything else out there!

cheers!

Problems:

I just started with Jing on Mac G5 OS 10.4.11. It seemed to work fine.

I didn't like the yellow ball (or amoeba?) and the fact I couldn't see how to quit. Even Force Quit doesn't work. (But see below.)

For now I am not using it regularly. I'd rather not have it running, and a standard (dock) interface would be better until I am using it a lot. And maybe even then-why learn new tricks that aren't necessary?

Then I found the preference blob-joy! there was the quit and there was an option for menu bar. I selected the latter and Jing is gone. I think it is still running, but can't get to it.

WT heck?? This is not good behavior.

I looked at your FAQ, but didn't see anything.

First off: although I have had a computer for a year, I certainly am not a Bill Gates! Terminology is frequently foreign to me, while commonplace for others. With that in mind, here are my problems & comments:

I have watched "How do I use this thing Jing?" and "Select something to Capture" (which had no sound) 3 times each. On the tiny image, I cannot see where you are "clicking"; sometimes there isn't even any explanation as you are rapidly "clicking" away.

Regarding "Sharing Images": "Choose store or embed..." I don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. "...get back the URL or embed code on clipboard..." there are 3 items in this one sentence that I don't know what you mean, or where to locate the item. Remember, I'm new at this.

Regarding "Video with Jing": I didn't even bother trying to figure that one out; I'm already lost with the above items.

It would be nice if the yellow "amoeba" was not always on my screen; peeking out. I find this annoying.

The idea of Jing sounds good, but if I can't figure out how to use it, it is a waste of space on my computer. With that in mind, can you provide more detailed assistance or advise me how I can remove all traces of Jing from my computer?

Thank you.

Quote floater
Matt Dyer :

Sparky325--I'd be happy to try to explain some of these terms for you.

URL: This is an acronym for the address you type into your Web browser. For this blog, the URL is http://blog.jingproject.com .

Clipboard: The Clipboard is a computer metaphor for the place stuff is stored when you cut or copy. If highlight some text in a document and copy it (either by right-clicking and selecting copy or by using a keyboard shortcut like Ctrl+C), the place where it is copied to is your Clipboard. Only one thing at a time can be on your Clipboard. You can then paste (again, through a right-click menu or Ctrl+V) to put the text on your Clipboard into your current active window.

Embed: Embedding is an option where you get the HTML code needed to place a video on a Web page back on your Clipboard. This is useful for putting a video right into a blog post for instance. You would just paste the code from your Clipboard to the blog post field, embedding your video in the page.

Jing works something like this:

You click the capture button on the launcher, from the icon in the system tray, or use a hotkey (assigned by clicking the More button on the launcher).

Some cross-hairs pop up. Select the window or region of the screen you want to capture.

Select whether you want to make an image or video.

If you select image, a preview of your image shows up. Use the buttons on the left to add text, arrows, frames, or highlights.

If you select video, a 3 second countdown flashes to let you know your recording is about to begin. To end your recording, hit the square stop button on the bottom of the region frame. A preview window appears, giving you the opportunity to watch your video before sharing it.

At this point, both images and videos have the same options: Share, Embed, and Cancel. Above these buttons are 4 destinations: Screencast.com, FTP, Flickr (image only), and File. When you click Share or Embed, your file is sent to that destination and the URL (the Web address where it is) is put on your Clipboard.

The File output works in much the same way, except that instead of uploading it somewhere on the internet, the file is sent to a folder you specify (you'll be asked to select this location the first time you share to File; you can change it afterwards in the Preferences by clicking the More button on the launcher).

If you don't like using the "sun" launcher on your desktop, you can turn it off by clicking the More button and then the Preferences button (both buttons look like two little gears). There's a checkbox that allows you to turn off the launcher. If you do, all the same options can be accessed via the Jing icon in your system tray on the bottom right of your taskbar.
